Thanks for the info. I just picked up a Ubiquiti ERLite‑3, ES‑24‑LITE, & UAP‑AC‑PRO for my network and i love it. I went though so may routers and none of them could handle the traffic i do. I would be curious to see how the TP-Link Archer C5400 would handle a stress test on WiFi and LAN.
I been struggling to find a decent router. Right now i have The Nighthawk x6s. I have around 12 devices laptops/consoles/cel phones etc. How does this compare to the x6s? X10? Would you recommend for multiple devices?? Thanks
Please ask TP-Link to include L2TP/PPTP/OpenVPN clients on these high end routers. They could also allow us to define route metrics for static routes. Thanks for the nice review though. You have helped me make the choices which otherwise could have taken me ages.
asus alreadt has a second WAN port you can configuere one of the lan ports as a second WAN port i recently bought the RT-87u i think the premium price is just silly 60GHz is only usefull in the same room annyway.
Hi I have the router and I have a eufy cam 2c camera setup and notice they lose connection quite a lot. I have smart connect enabled. I also have a deco p9 mesh system that never flustered with the cameras. Any ideas what the issue could be?
When you were testing the 5g signal, how far were you from the router? I purchased a Netgear r8000 a few days go but the 5g signal is poor in my office 40 - 45 ft away, I'm thinking of returning it and getting the TP-LINK Archer C5400. Do you think it will have better signal quality/ reach? thanks for your time.
I need a good router to replace my VM Superhub 2ac. 5g is good, but the 2.4g range is terrible and doesnt cover my house. Maybe because i live in a congested area of lots of 2.4g devices. Im looking at the C9/C8 or C5/C59. Anyone know of a good budget router for the job? Budget is £
trying to figure out the best range router but so far its a freaking hassle to find one that can cover the entire house all the way to the back of the garden (85 feet) with the router being at the far point and cant be moved. looks like this one isnt it either. think i might have to go with a dual band and use 1 band for a external outdoor antenna... expensive and a total hassle to get the wire there...
Hello, I actually wanted to ask, does the model of router in any way affect its wired performance? I am running a tplink router(maybe an n300) and I have a 40meg up/down connection. It works well while browsing, however I have to occasionally face stream drops while watching videos on RUclips and gaming is simply horrendous. I experience serious lag with a lot of players zipping around. I run a couple of traceroutes and ping test and received a 100% packet loss on all (5 pings heroes of the storm and 3 to dota 2 servers.) I think this is realistically not possible. Could this be a router issue or my ISPs servers? Thanks.
It could be if the router is underpowered. I would try the walmart rental approach...Buy a higher end router, set it up and test it. If it doesnt make things better for you, return it. :)
Thanks for the reply, I have an average of 3 devices (max 7) accessing wifi at a particular time. Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for the router to suit my needs? I need greater lan capabilities so maybe Qos is a requirement. I don't wish to go overkill. Thanks again.
Well you can also try to bypass your router on your main pc and test it out first. Try to game and watch videos while directly connected to your modem and see if anything changes. With such light load its possible u just have internet issues.
Can someone help.. Where would be the best location to place a router? I bought the 100mbps from comcast and I need signal to my downstairs TV to stream 4k video and my computer which is upstairs and is located direct opposite end of the house from the tv? Would it better sitting next to the tv or somewhere upstairs in the middle of the house?
skulldriver101 He wants to be a standard on all routers... (not bad feature to have) You can do that with OpenWrt or Pfsense or even Vyos but if you don't want to do any effort on reading or learning or have any kind of hasle you can buy a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter ER-X for $50 has very good performance on load balance since is based on Vyatta (VyOS) but isn't wireless... I rather want load balancing than great wireless around my house I have everything I can on wires and just cellphones on wireless so I don't really care much about wireless I bougth 2 d-link 835A1 loaded OpenWrt connected them together by their 5Ghz antennas and set one on channel 1 2.4ghz and the other in channel 6 2.4ghz had my entire apartment covered and part of my building with just $40 of hardware.
How fast is USB3 on this router for you? I just picked it up and seeing that there's no difference between USB2.0 and USB3.0 ports on this router with a USB3 storage device. (Maxes out at 12MiB/s). What speeds are you seeing?
I'v been thinkin of turning my old plex server into a pfsense router actually. i7 3770, 16gb ram. I just feel like its a little overpowered for the build and much of it would goto waist...
Yeah I know there are solutions to this. I was going down the line of, built in to these higher end consumer models as a standard option. This way everything is all-in-one. :)
if you just want to plug your xbox in, do you even need it? just plug it into whatever router your provider provided. if not, any cheat $50 router will do the job.
TP-Link has just released version 2.0 of the Archer C5400 and it has removed the 3G/4G USB capabilities, I'm not OK with this and they added a simple push button to check for new firmware via inside the Web GUI only, I don't see why they are sneaking this through, companies are supposed to add new features to a newer version not take them away, and your review is of version 1.0, you should check into version 2.0 and see if there is anything else I'm missing that has changed in 2.0 also in version 2 is easily identified by the new TP-Link logo on top of the router and not the older logo, and a new green metalic shinny box that it comes in.
Looking for the best bang for the buck! Something to maximize speeds, signal strength etc. I have three teenage kids all online...seems like all the time! Netflix, gaming and we are trying hard to cut the cord. Kodi, SET among others. Do you have a suggestion for a wireless router or Mesh Wifi? Using issued ISP wireless router. It is a Hilton CODA 4582. THANKS!!
You should definitly check Mikrotik ; Their router are incredible and provide much more flexibility for us, plex/professionnals users. These are the most reliable network equipment that I've ever bought !
And yet a $5 - esp8266 can deauth it in a matter of seconds. Does it offer management packet filter, NO ! So it's security is no better than a $25 wifi router.
'From TP-Link on 03-30-17' Currently Version 1 is phasing out, but we do have several left. We have plenty of version 2 available for that newer SKU. Max with the performance of Wireless technology it makes no different on gaming if you get at least 80% of signal on your gaming device... I used to game on Wireless never had an issue now I did a wireless site survey when I installed my AP's around my house I get 80% of signal on the worst escenario around my house.. I tried to not use Wireless much since is unsecure my AP's are in different vlans than the rest of my devices are... So I ended just using it for cellphones and tablets... Tv's, game consoles, Pc's are all wired... Except for my laptop some times you want to go to the bathroom and keep working without disconnecting of the internet (joys of wireless shit while surfing)
Max cool, the only way I get terrible wireless if I stand in front of my microwave while is ON still 80+% of signal but quality is super bad while microwave is ON but that has its own explanation. Due wireless usage buying a $100 router is pointless I covered my house with 2 d-link 835A1 for just 40 for both.
Geo Gmz Nice setup! I use Ubiquiti AP AC LITE's in my house, 3 of them. The nice thing about Ubiquiti is that you have a centralised control center, like this: image.maxtheking.nl/1/2016-12-05_13-14-47.jpg
Max True I like Ubiquiti they know what they're doing, I hope the guys from OpenWRT develop a Wireless Controller for their firmware I know is much to ask but it would be nice to reflash old wireless and control them from a single point that would be awesome.
This router C5400 has an auto-rebooting issues. Mine started acting funny about 6 months after purchase... contacted TP Link and they mentioned the unit needs replacement... don't go to a shop or service centre for a paid "Check-up" ask for a replacement... have posted a video of its behaviour as well for folks to see what it does.
Just bought this router today, loved the review. Tremendous amount of technical insight, definitely earned my sub !

Great animations and great presentation!
Great review. Thanks for all the good information about this router. I am trying to catch up on the newer wireless routers. Thanks.
another great vid Jason!
ty :)
Byte My Bits what the app name
Thanks for the informational video without all the bs!
I just wondered if using smart connect and airtime fairness would improve anything. Plus should I enable mu mimo on all bands? Thanks
your videos are great and very informative
ty :)
Asus (RT-AC86U) has to possibility to have a 2nd WAN port that can be used to Fail-Over or load balance, check it out...
3:22 No, it's now how it works. You can load balance separate connections, but not bonding single connection over separate ISP.
there are high end routers that do dual WAN connections with aggregation... Netgear makes some...
Watching this while my computer is taking 5 minutes to load the video rip
Why dont use two 2.4GHz chipset one for 450/600 MHz and one for 800/1000 MHz for older and newer clients as smartphones/tablets?
I been struggling to find a decent router. Right now i have The Nighthawk x6s. I have around 12 devices laptops/consoles/cel phones etc. How does this compare to the x6s? X10? Would you recommend for multiple devices?? Thanks

Love how there is 2 5 GHz bands!
Why all they are is a gimmick. Sounds good and looks good on paper and in reality it doesn't work.
JayzBeerz So if I have 10 devices connected to one 5 GHz band it will perform the same as if there were 2 separate ones managing 5 each?
it does work and still looks great on paper .....if you don't have one then really you don't need to comment
asus alreadt has a second WAN port you can configuere one of the lan ports as a second WAN port i recently bought the RT-87u i think the premium price is just silly 60GHz is only usefull in the same room annyway.
are you able to wall mount this router without killing signal?
Thanks for this video. Cool stuff. You should do as full review of the Google WiFi 3 pack once it gets released. :)
if they send to me ;p
Synology make a router that allows multiple wan connections I have one and love it, it runs there smart os that you can install add ons onto
can i use it from 200m distance..? if not what is its actual long distance? plz kindly inform me
Hi I have the router and I have a eufy cam 2c camera setup and notice they lose connection quite a lot. I have smart connect enabled. I also have a deco p9 mesh system that never flustered with the cameras. Any ideas what the issue could be?
Is there a big difference between the v1 and v2 and how much is that difference worth in terms of money
Nice video if possible could you post what app you used on your iPhone for this test as I would like to do some testing on my home set-up. Thanks
ios app called sweetspots
how much flash memory and system memory does this device have?
What is the height of the device considering the antennas?

I know this video is old. I'm curious to know what router you're currently using?
What phone where you using ? Shoudk have used a samsung
I bought one per your review, too bad version 2 of this router no longer supports the 3g/4g
please anyone can tell me if this router I can use internet simcard?
Does it actually make the Internet fast
Do It support 4G LTE simcard and whare is the SIM card Slot ?
ultra soft spoken dude
can it really fail over to 4g? doesn´t say so on the official page
Budget is £
hey friend i have same exact router but am not able get pass 250 mbps in speed test in my note 9 on 5ghz .can u help me
Gaming performance test?

Yes

well usually wifi routers broadcast the signal upwards so putting it on the lowest floor would make the most sense
that dual isp thing already exists. linus did a video a while back explaining.
skulldriver101 He wants to be a standard on all routers... exactly. I was talking about making it a standard when you get to a certain price point in these high end routers. Along with 8 Ethernet ports.
I mean, you have all this horsepower going into these bigger routers. why not use it?
Could you possibly that a look at the Linksys AC5400 at some point?
+Hunter Smith if they wanna send me one
Alright
I got tplink ac 3200 and over 3 years no dropouts
How fast is USB3 on this router for you? I just picked it up and seeing that there's no difference between USB2.0 and USB3.0 ports on this router with a USB3 storage device. (Maxes out at 12MiB/s). What speeds are you seeing?
were you plugging a 2.0 into a 3.0 by any chance?
For that price you should really look at a pfsense box, and a Ubiquiti AP
I'v been thinkin of turning my old plex server into a pfsense router actually. i7 3770, 16gb ram. I just feel like its a little overpowered for the build and much of it would goto waist...
maybe use unraid and some extra nics, the rest could be a file server, game server whatever.
Jason using mikrotik router you can connect using two isp's
Yeah I know there are solutions to this. I was going down the line of, built in to these higher end consumer models as a standard option. This way everything is all-in-one. :)
anyway TP-LINK C5400 looks so cool
Am in to mikrotik so i have one as my router with wifi AP built-in. but have to say TP-link is fency and look so nice.
Should I buy this just so I can plug it into my Xbox or is it meant for 4 devices+
if you just want to plug your xbox in, do you even need it? just plug it into whatever router your provider provided. if not, any cheat $50 router will do the job.
The gigabit ports on the back can be a bottleneck, does this WiFi router support port bonding
dont think so
My internet company is talktalk so if i buy a tp link and put in the tp link instead of the talktalk router will it still work
I have all the stuff that goes into the dsl and power
So did it work

Byte My Bits what os do you use for your plex server?
HarryBallsOnYa32 unraid
Yeap, unraid in my latest xeon build
My old Netgear R8000 gets 580Mbps on a Galaxy S6
mine sucks it sends less than my old router......it makes me so mad .... i paid more money and it just doesnt work
Same here. Not sure what is going on with it. I thought it was my DNS, but I have checked with other DNS names but same result.
can I use solar to power my tp link router?
Hamisu Yusuf electric is electric
hahahah
word of warning, do not buy the router new off Ebay, TP-Link will not honor the warranty

this router is fucking shit. One day after installing it, its on a endless reboot. And no one knows a fucking fix
