I recommend the book: The Viking, the Jomsviking Saga by Bjorn Andreas Bullhansen! It follows a character that eventually ends up fighting in this very battle, definitely a great read!
He lived an adventurous and heroic life (who also gets the pretty princesses along the way), Olaf is man among men. But a bit rash, though if the allied fleet didn't betray him, he could have won, and north Europe history would have changed forever.
He already changed norther European history by introducing Christianity en-masse to the Norwegians...something that was going to happen sooner or later, and better it be by Olaf early than at the tip of a German or English sword later on.
The allied fleet was Jomsvikings. True pagans who lived and died for Odin and Valhalla, it was foolish of Olaf to think they would stand with such a man. Also I have heard accounts of Olaf being known for nailing infants to doorways. He deserved everything bad coming his way.
@@ChaosToRule I can tell this is a touchy subject for you, but learn to have a little perspective on history. For one, a lot of people DID stand with a such a man, and died for him, and faith, far as I can tell, mattered little and less in that war except as a propaganda point used by his enemies. It was all about prestige, power, and position. He had, others wanted, hence bloodshed. Same old story, there were no gods or heroes on either side, just ambitious men. Also....'accounts' of him 'being known' to do something sounds a hell of a lot like unsubstantiated hearsay.

Me: *muffled "Hail King Olaf" in the background under the blanket*
Aren't you Hindu? What are you doing with a crusader profile pic
Holy! Those ships are gorgeous!
Great work guys ! Always worth the wait.
Dude, I literally just opened the Wikipedia page for this, like minutes ago :O
And now you upload this...
Tryggvason's ongoing raids in England are very impressive. Guy was ambitious as hell!
I recommend the book: The Viking, the Jomsviking Saga by Bjorn Andreas Bullhansen! It follows a character that eventually ends up fighting in this very battle, definitely a great read!
Great as always. Congrats
He lived an adventurous and heroic life (who also gets the pretty princesses along the way), Olaf is man among men. But a bit rash, though if the allied fleet didn't betray him, he could have won, and north Europe history would have changed forever.
Well said.
"Heroic life" Like he used 3/4 of his time killing and plundering Civilians? Maybe a "brave" life is more fitting.
The ghost of King Olaf possessed your narrator at the end of the video haha
Viking Demon!
I really appreciate what you do.
He went down like a King.
"Since his birth in the mid-1960's . . ."
1:35 :)
Yeah, we know :)
Lousy Viking hippies.
Yeah! That's what I'm talking about! Finally some vikings! There's so much to talk about here.
I love this channel, but I would like to see more modern era battles as well. I enjoy seeing how the strategies of war changes over time. Thanks for the great content!!!
>Converts to Christianity

Great video! I'd want to see more of Hannibal videos, though... This is my kind request, brave narrator and history-addict! I'll drop a like for all the effort as well as for the resulting video.
Thank you sir. Hannibal is coming soon, around 10 days.
@@HistoryMarche I love Hannibal series. The Narration (the best I could hear on RUclips, in general), the soundtrack, everything!

@@ovidiubeleut3254 Du fick den här tummen upp för: The Narration (the best I could hear on RUclips, in general), the soundtrack, everything! (från Enskede).

Now that's a good video about Vikings with the appropriate accent!
Hey mate! Thanks for stopping by.
Have been getting an "An error occurred. Please try again later" for the last week straight with this video. Sad, it looks like a really cool one.
That's strange. Have you tried clearing your browser history and cache?
@@HistoryMarche I'll have to try that. I will get this issue sometimes with videos from KingsAndGenerals channel as well. This has been the only video recently though...

actually now that i live in Denmark, i've heard this story quite a few times throghout the history of kinder garten and school
You guys are awesome! Love ur vids!
Nice one
Olaf's all like: "Oh, your religion says I'm gonna be a king? Yeah I'm going with that" ... "and let's forcibly make my country folk that faith too"
Well Done
Takes courage to go out like that.
Was kinda expecting him to win since he done so well in his life.
They’ll be in a personal union for hundreds of years
No. There are still many hundred years left until that happens. The consequence of Svolder was 15 years of Danish supremacy (and rule by the Ladejarls). In 1015 Saint Olav the Holy defeated the Danes and Ladejarls, and took the Kingship and independence.
I thought Olaf was gonna pull a massive upset against all odds
Oh man :(
I was rooting for Olaf....
Amazing video nevertheless!
As they say: "Legends never die!"
Thought the main hero of the Saga will survive but the death makes this Saga more epic!
