I love the aesthetics particularly from the Japanese form of minimalism. I like appreciation of the broken and imperfect.. it is more sustainable way of living
I thought the same thing. I was laughing because he said things like "I did my wash, nothing special about it". It was a very real video and Iove that it was so real. I could relate on a lot of levels. :)
I always feel self-conscious about drinking instant coffee whenever I watch minimalist youtuber's videos. But I was so happy to find that, here in Japan, they sell the same brand of instant coffee that my mom and grandmother would drink. It gives me good feelings of home and tastes just as good (sometimes better) than fancy brewed coffees.
Yeah, I agree, staying home is really the best thing to do. My friends don't, they can't seem to understand the huge amount of energy that introverts like us spend just to stay around them ( as much as we may love them).
I'm living completely alone now at the age 27. I got to say, been a minimalist and praising the small things you can do is the best medicine for the mind.
Man! You have the genetics of a superhero. Tall, wide shoulders, and all this while eating white bread and jam in the morning and watching movies. Do you realize how lucky you are!!
Thnx for the awesome video. I didn't realize I was living like a minimalist til recently. A breakup earlier in 2020 has left me with a minimum of physical things in my house. Moved to a new apartment last may and tbh it was the easiest and quickest move ever. Keeping things simple inside as well as outside of the house agrees with me very much. Regular routine incl gym and a trip to the supermarket are the most exciting events of the day, love spending my time at home listening to music or watching my series. Thnx for showing me I'm not the only 1 living this kind of way, keep up the good work with the videos.
Thanks for this. I am beginning my minimalist lifestyle and this helps a lot.. You kept mentioning about your how rural your neighborhood is. Do you mind showing us around your neighborhood? :)
Yes man gratitude is key. I’ve been beating myself up on what I don’t have and I need to focus on what I do have. Even though there are people my age have accomplished a lot more like I don’t have a car and stuff like that I pay for my own place I live on my own I have a roof over my head and I have food I’m so thankful.
LOVED IT! Everything from pointing out modern work culture and its tendency to minimize non conforming people to the fact that you make quick food to eat that’s still enjoyable and good. You are very literally embodying a minimal life, uniquely tailored to you! so happy I subscribed to you!
@@SenaShimotsuma Do you ever have to go on business trips or conferences for work? I'm really curious how you balance the demands of a regular full-time job in Japan with doing your own stuff and having an actual life.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos Sena! You remind me to be content and most importantly appreciative to what I already have. I would love you to show us your diet and how you keep amazing shape. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Your videos are so calming. I've been in Canada for 15 years,. I gradiated university and had a job in the corporate world. You ignated my burning desire to leave and go back home in Europe to live a more laidback lifestyle. This stresfull, always on the go lifestyle is not working for me. It never has. Glad to see you had the courage to just pack your bags and leave. Does your family live in the same town where you are? Are they close by? Having family and friends close by is very important too.
There's a counter-culture in the U.S. which has always considered the "Japanese aesthetic" as minimalist, an appreciation for the beauty of a Japanese garden, a single object of everyday life designed well and amazing in it's simplicity, the ability to be quiet at ease, the tea ceremony or the use of natural materials in the home, so many examples. All admired but little followed values but there you are, just doing it.
Wow. I almost cried couple of times while watching this. First time because I felt your calm and peaceful energy and it filled me with joy and second time because you're hilarious. I think being grateful for the small things in life is very important. Thank you for your video, really made my day better!
I started cutting my hair by myself due to the quarantine and I learned that it's not difficult as I thought, but my skill is not good as you haha. Maybe I will stop to go to the barbershop in the future haha. From Vietnam with curiosity about minimalism.
Wow. I didn't now what to expect. I certainly didn't expect to love this video! It's nice to see someone wise, reflective, humble and grateful. I've been cutting my hair too, not as good as you, for 17 months, without fail. And only sometimes do I reflect on money and time saved. I feel bad for my stylist but I may never return except maybe for a visit. Keep doing what you're doing. And that toaster microwave is pretty cool and your washer too!
I’m with you on being in alone. I work from home as well. You are right, it’s about appreciating what you have and being grateful. It’s also about learning the difference between what you want and what you need. I’ve started living as simple a life as I can. Got rid of my TV which was a great decision
i am now 62, and have been living this kind of minimalist life since i was 30. my definition of minimalism is a studio room with hot shower, a 5-layer stack of 36x75x4 foam mattresses with 2 pillows and 2 sheets, an aircon, a ref, a microwave oven atop the ref, a rice cooker, and a 17-inch laptop. of course, cash for eat-outs and deliveries and for laundry.
Love how you think and what you do Sena. You look very healthy, but seeing what you eat I got really confused. How the hell can you, while eating white bread, jam, ramen and drink instant coffee everyday look like that! Then you mentioned that you are 24 years old and I remember all the shit I ate at that age and still felt fine. When you reach 35-40 the body will react very differently, trust me! Stay healthy bro!
Hi Sena, I'm so inspired by this video of yours. I feel like we're in the same. I enjoy staying at home and like 3-in-1 instant coffee. I wake up early too and enjoyed being lazy or binge-watching movies. I love writing about my travel adventures, solo backpacking life, being a nomad, or anything really that makes me happy or worth sharing on my blog website. Above all, I thought myself how to be grateful for having a roof over my head, the internet, food to eat, etc. And thank you for reminding me that today. Hugs from a Filipino in Thailand, Daniel

Congratulations 🎉🎈 I love your video and it happened to my very first time I stumbled on it ;)))
You have such a nice pot, you should try making coffee in it from coarsely ground coffee. Just bring the water to the point where it steams and first bubbles form. Add the coffee and let it sit for a few minutes, almost bringing it to a boil. Then take it off the heat and let it set for ten minutes. It's fantastic, often even if you mess up a little. Even if it boils over accidentally, it often ends up nice. I think they call it turkish coffee?
Hello Sena, 🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧I totally agree with you about NOT waking up early, I function better late afternoon & evening. I usually stay up all night & catch a few hours sleep from 8am to 3 pm then I’m ready to go!
I also like making instant coffee, it’s quick and easy to make. Like the way you show the real aspect of you in your channel. Keep going and make more and more video for us.

Thank you so much for saying that people who naturally wake up later are not lazy people. I wake up at 6a.m. for work and it's always an effort. From the day I was born, I'm a natural night owl. Thank heavens for coffee. I'm an activity director at the 2nd largest 55 and up community in the U.S. in Pennsylvania. I work with seniors who have demetia and Alzheimers disease. Our department is the "fun department", so I have to be awake and always have an upbeat personality, no matter what. So I am so thankful for coffee!!! I love your attitude about being grateful. I agree. I always say that if you can be grateful for the littlest things in life you will be a happier person. Your channel is great! I just subscribed. :)
Thank you for your honesty and introducing me to how minimalism works and not sugarcoating things. I kind of see myself being in that scenario once I become a minimalist and hopefully experience living alone.
I like your channel. My journey towards minimalism has been over a long time, but every year I always end up throwing out more than what I buy, so my house is getting less and less cluttered. It's great!
I travel with the tubes of instant coffee Starbucks makes and occasionally use them at home as I really enjoy the taste. Thank you for showing instant coffee! There is a place for it in life : ) Lovely video content and I especially (as a night owl) do not wake up early naturally and my productivity starts in the late afternoon. You are very thoughtful and I appreciate it.
I feel relax every time i watch your video. You remind us to be grateful for everything we have that most of the time we take it for granted. Inspiring...
Hi Sena, I am so glad I clicked into your videos. They are truly amazing showcase of your perspectives which I believed are also held by a minority group of people out there, but for various reasons have not been able to come to fruition completely in their lives yet. However, I would like to mention that you are more than amazing because I just realised you are only 24 years of age. I am really baffled at how you attained so much maturity and wisdom at this age, and that really made you to be so enigmatically attractive a person. I like your convictions such as living a solitary or sedentary life without any guilt and unabashedly even if it is classified by society as either lazy or unsuccessful, and that the traditional yardstick of success does not truly define a person as it is also a convergence of other factors; which are so inspiring and reassuring... not to mention that deep voice of yours. To be honest, I had only stereotyped minimalist to become someone who have lived through a big part of their lives and decided to change course to focus on what brings them joy. Though you do not fit into that, you certainly do not come across as someone with platitudes. Rather, I find you to be really authentic and unique, and wished you were a part of my early life so that I could have shortened the long runway to reach the calm state of mind.
Joel here from Manila, PH. I agree what you have shared.. focus on the things we can control such us our behavior and actions! First time to be here in your channel and I'm excited catching up to your other videos :)
I used to instant coffee in my 20s, but I have trouble sleeping at night if I drink instant coffee. So, I buy fine ground coffee and make my coffee with some sugar and creamer.
I agree with the waking up early. I also used to believe that waking up early will make you successful but as time goes sometimes I wake up early and then be idle for a couple of hours which forfeit the idea of waking up so early to be productive. Good job on the haircut, by the way!
well, I subscribed when I saw you drink coffee similar with mine, Nescafe🥰. Anyway, I like your video because, I finally appreciate the idea of minimalism. Been living here in HK for almost 5 years now, then last week I needed to change address, I feel so stunned when I realized I accumulated lots of stuffs, some of them are things I seldom use. I definitely transitioning myself into minimalism this year onward.
i understand how instant coffee is a gift from the industry as well as tea bags and being able to buy food in markets, your explanation for using instant is the same as mine sometimes it is too much work to prepare a cup of real coffee and in the country where I live the cost of a good cup of coffee is sometimes equal to the cost of two days of breakfast for me (coincidentally toast and something like mustard, cheese, eggs or salad to top it off)
I really like your outdoor shots. I would like to see how you set up your camera, to get them so nicely framed. Sometimes I like to stir instant cocoa, into my coffee.
I always wake up early and ending up doing nothing like sitting in the coach watching YT or browsing social media. That’s how I found your channel. lol
You don't need a fancy coffee machine, these pods might not be best for the environment. Sena for Christmas I'm going to get you a stove top coffee pot, all you need is ground coffee, then the old grounds can be used on plants. Side note: I'm super impressed with the home haircut.
staying at home is great too. I'm terrible when it comes to being a minimalist. I know I can apply it in many aspects of my day to day life and save so much more. I wonder where I should start though.
I looooved this. You're an authentic person who doesn't sugarcoat your message of minimalism with pretense. Although I'm an aspiring minimalist (so dang far to go), I know my coffee routine takes 7 or 8 steps more than yours😂. BUT there's instant coffee waiting to be used in my cupboard...perhaps tomorrow morning! Thank you and aloha from Hawaii.
My first viewing. Very nice work! Maybe you’ve already covered this in other videos, but you are in very good physical shape, with excellent muscle tone, for someone who sits indoors all day. And your calorie intake doesn’t seem to be high enough to maintain your bulkier physique. Perhaps it’s o.k. for a delicate lotus flower, but not for you. 🤔
Minimalism, slow living, intentional choices, gratefulness, that’s my life...I totally enjoyed your channel, I appreciate you letting me into your home/life. New Sub!❤️
As an Aussie, I can see the NZ influences in your personality. Keep on doing what you're doing. Minimalism with a big dose of realism. I smile when I watch your videos. Instant coffee, white bread; choice!
Kia ora, besides the minimalism and the nice video: I used to live in NewZealand as well and I am so happy to listen to your propper Kiwi accent. Its just lovely.
Don't leave your capo on your guitar all the time, you might pit your frets. This video really calmed me down today and made me feel a bit better about wanting to spend days at home on my own, some days i just don't want that over stimulation from the outside world. Oh and great job on your haircut, no way mine would look that good if I tried 😂
I really love the way your flat is decorated, almost nothing except a table and a one seater "sofa" . How much do I wish to achieve your advanced level of minimalist !!! I have been trying to declutter stuff of my own on and off, books in particular (and DVDs occasionally).
I use instant coffee if I want iced coffee, otherwise I use coffee pods or the instant style pour-overs. Love your videos, I've began adopting some of your approaches to simplicity. :)
I too appreciate doing simple things and all around me there is so much pressure to validate your life with exciting trips and an enviable social life. I loved how you said "I saw too many people this week, I'm going to stay home alone" SAME - I'm tired of being judged for my simple lifestyle and your videos are a good reminder that it's perfectly valid to live an intentional "boring" life without fancy things or fancy plans with fancy people. :-)
I totally agree with your thoughts of a boring life, Although I would not call it boring. Because that is simply who I am. Simple, less stress, and Less Stuff is so much more relaxing than wanting more, more, and more. For what more responsibility, responsibility to take care of all that stuff. I call it baggage. I love gardening , and being able to grow a few vegetables, and sitting outdoors and enjoying being outdoors. And enjoying having my own space. And very gratefull . And also not worrying on making payments on credit cards, and paying interest fees. right now I am getting rid of a lot of things I do not use. and clearing out storage. and shed. I have notice I can think a lot better and clearer. Much easier life and better for your health in the long run.
Finally, a minimalist without aesthetic things. Love it, it's so authentic and real.
Cheers for watching this video!!

3 principles for minimalists : 1) Ikea, 2) Uniqlo, 3) Coffee
First two is not sustainable and hurting our planet, it cheap mass market with poor quality.

I like to practice my English with you because you speak clearlier than other RUclipsrs , thank you
An actually realistic routine, so rare :) What's the minimalist fitness regime?
I used to instant coffee in my 20s, but I have trouble sleeping at night if I drink instant coffee. So, I buy fine ground coffee and make my coffee with some sugar and creamer.
Short, sweet, to the point and not embellished. I like this one!
Refreshing. And the production value is amazing. Thanks.
Seeing at home is the best. Totally agree, sometimes it just exhausting having to see too many people.
i understand how instant coffee is a gift from the industry as well as tea bags and being able to buy food in markets, your explanation for using instant is the same as mine sometimes it is too much work to prepare a cup of real coffee and in the country where I live the cost of a good cup of coffee is sometimes equal to the cost of two days of breakfast for me (coincidentally toast and something like mustard, cheese, eggs or salad to top it off)
I really like your outdoor shots. I would like to see how you set up your camera, to get them so nicely framed. Sometimes I like to stir instant cocoa, into my coffee.
I don’t know why I find these videos fascinating
I mainly watch it coz he looks hott
You inspired me to get up and make myself some nice breakfast and work out. Thanks for making this video and all the very best! Subscribed.
Great vid.
I read Goodbye, Things by Fumio Sasaki. It’s a great read and very good representation of minimalism.
The concept is interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I always wake up early and ending up doing nothing like sitting in the coach watching YT or browsing social media. That’s how I found your channel. lol
I love your Vlog . I miss japan.. you're very creative and contented person. I love your personality.
You don't need a fancy coffee machine, these pods might not be best for the environment. Sena for Christmas I'm going to get you a stove top coffee pot, all you need is ground coffee, then the old grounds can be used on plants. Side note: I'm super impressed with the home haircut.
Your video style is so calming 😌
staying at home is great too. I'm terrible when it comes to being a minimalist. I know I can apply it in many aspects of my day to day life and save so much more. I wonder where I should start though.
I love your videos. 💗 That doesn't seem like enough food. Do you eat more for your gym workout?
I have been doing the same simple lifestyle for years! good to know there is someone like me out there!

Love your ideas about what really matters in life.
I love listening to you! You are really amazing and I'm fascinated with your minimalist philosophy! Good work!
a minimalist without aesthetic things. I just love it. Greeting from Jakarta, Indonesia
This is the way of life, thanks for sharing
I love you and how you control your minimalist life.
Thank you for watching this video!
Looks like you played rugby in NZ. True? And you know that you have a NZ accent, right? I wonder if it transfers into Japanese.
Hey, I just wanna say I love what you doing man!! Keep it up 🔥🔥✊🏼
I really love the way your flat is decorated, almost nothing except a table and a one seater "sofa" . How much do I wish to achieve your advanced level of minimalist !!! I have been trying to declutter stuff of my own on and off, books in particular (and DVDs occasionally).
Cheers for watching this video!
When I see him doing the hair cut I was like wow 😳 🤩 すごい!!!
Cheers for watching this video!
Loved it! Your video is a fantastic treat to start my day. Greetings from Germany.
Hahaha I really appreciate it!
I totally agree with your thoughts of a boring life, Although I would not call it boring. Because that is simply who I am. Simple, less stress,
and Less Stuff is so much more relaxing than wanting more, more, and more. For what more responsibility, responsibility to take care of all that stuff. I call it baggage. I love gardening , and being able to grow a few vegetables, and sitting outdoors and enjoying being outdoors.
And enjoying having my own space. And very gratefull . And also not worrying on making payments on credit cards, and paying interest
fees. right now I am getting rid of a lot of things I do not use. and clearing out storage. and shed. I have notice I can think a lot better and clearer. Much easier life and better for your health in the long run.
Loved it. I would love to be a minimalist too. I dislike chaos.
I like your contents. Simple and realistic! ✨
Cheers!
