- Day 4 - I walk past Binevenagh and deep into forestry in search of another wild camp.
About the Walk: I am walking The Ireland Way for the next five weeks. The Ireland Way is a long distance path (1,000km) that connects a series of hiking trails between the north and south of Ireland. I will begin walking at the Giants Causeway and finish the trip in Castletownbere in County Cork.

I love wild camping, I do it in South Ayrshire Scotland, tent or hammock, depending on the weather, but you can bet there is nothing like it,

Took my kids camping in the mountains with a friend from their school and their Dad. It was amazing we couldn't believe we were the only ones there. The kids loved it but we were getting stick from my father in law then I remembered the only time I was even scared in a tent was in a camp site where lads had been drinking and were messing about in a car. If you've lugged all your gear up a trail anybody you meet up there is going to have the same mindset as you.

Greetings from Virginia, USA. Just turned 70 and 14 weeks with a new hip. I will be built proof by September. Completely enjoy your videos and and yes the fairies are real. Those places in the world are the thin spots between and if you open yourself up: you can experience seeing god and his wonders. Looking forward to being on the trails and byways soon. Be happy, be well and may god hold you in the palm of his hand watch over you.

Hi Derik it’s funny I woke up thinking about you this morning saying I bet it time for a shower and that’s the first thing you said lol. I try to watch you everyday and give you support along the way. I know it’s difficult sometimes being out there alone. It not that you want to do anything different. It’s just nice to get a little cheer and attaboy along the way. I really admire you for bringing us all along with you and letting us all see the only thing to fear in life is allowing dread and fear rule your choices in life. Jaysus Derek your becoming very spiritual like your all cousin 😀. There is a noticeable difference in these latest videos. You seem like you are relaxed and not challenging yourself to overcome personal hurdles. Doesn't our country look so lush and calm. Your doing great. If I may say one thing, loosing your Mam and Dad when you did was traumatic and everyone's pain is revelant to them. You were so young and grief is bloody hard to deal with. But look at you now. They are real proud of you and your brothers x

As you say there is no point worrying about things that are very unlikely to happen. I usually meditate when i go hiking and that helps eliminate worries a lot. All I need now is for the restrictions on international travel to be lifted before my flight in August. Keep going and keep enjoying the moments and please keep putting out these lovely videos. Derek, beautifully peaceful walking along those quiet roads and tracks in the Northern Sperrins. I can empathise with your eating on the go to keep the midges away🦟👣😊 Loved that camp spot (again!) in the forest. A fantastic account of feeling the fear and doing it anyway and I think the sheep here are definitely less of a threat than those animals in Botswana😊 Love the editing on the go👍👍

You made me laugh this morning as I listen to your story about wild camping in Africa and how you are not afraid now. Did it ever occur to you just how brave you where to be camping amongst the hyena,lions and elephants 🐘? Yea you are correct you where a Psychopath lol 😂 but that being said you are here now making wonderful memories and videos for us to enjoy. And I have said it before your history lesson with the visual scenery as you travel on your journey is top notch!!! Irish Farmers are the scariest thing, imagine if the lions had Barbour jackets, Shotguns and that funny unintelligible languange they all seem to speak (regardless of which county they are from)
Haha I find them so friendly. Have met hundreds of farmers on my long walks in Ireland and find they are mostly lighthearted and helpful. Never had trouble from a single one (I realise you’re probably joking) 😋
@@DerekCullenOutdoors yeah, most like hikers. We live in a rural area so apart from. 24 hour silage hauling on main roads they are grand😜

Nice vids, you're walking along my regular weekend trail runs on the Ulster Way sections until you get to Goles Forest in the Sperrins. Really enjoying these. Take care on your navigation in a few places as the waymarkers are missing or still awaiting new direction discs here and there. The lane up to Benbradagh through the forest has no sign at the gate just now (or didn't a month ago), and then the next section from Dungiven is thin if you choose the nicer route from the pdf map following around Corrick Mountain and up through the Glenshane forest then over to Moydamlaght forest, which is much more interesting than taking the road. The trail followed between the Mass rock and the Grotto at the very back of Glenshane forest can be slightly hard to spot before then walking over the bog land to Craig-na-Shoke, this is again thin for markers until you get into the second woods, there is a green raised trail through the saddle that makes the inter forest part much easier. Hope you enjoy it all, good luck. I just scanned your gear list and saw you are using the Hiiker maps, be a bit cautious with those as they are not 100% correct for the UW and seem to come from an older GPS trace. I have noticed issues around Rigged Hill, Donald's Hill, the Glenshane forest is left out and also possibly some issues around Crockbrack where the mountain section is left out from memory. I flagged those to the app makers but they appear to be not fixed. The local council have been doing loads of local remarking there recently by the way.

@@DerekCullenOutdoors ah you must be out towards Pettigo by now, if you can flag it to the Hiiker guys , it would probably help others though as those sections are not very well illustrated.
There are some lovely spots on the way down to Blacklion, it's worth walking the full Lough Navar loop and visiting the waterfalls, the Holy well in at Belcoo and Big Dog and Little Dog with their Finn McCools hounds mythology are all great spots along the way. Hope you enjoy every step.

How do you find a place to wild camp? Do you have to ask anyone to camp where you do or just find an isolated spot?
I very rarely need to ask and just look where other people are unlikely to be/look - which is pretty much most of the hills, forest, countryside 👍👍
