The Volvo 5 Cylinders both petrol and diesel are some of the most mechanically reliable engines ever made. Only thing to look out for on them is the timing belt.

I had a focus ST with that same engine, made nearly 260bhp on a dyno run - loved the sound it made along with the pops and bangs from the twin exit exhaust. The S-max version was often overlooked but equally as tuneable
I drove one for work purposes. EU08VGC. It replaced a Mondeo St220 that was rammed. Very quick for what it was and surprised a lot of people especially as diesels were being adopted and people initially thought that was what it was.
my 08 plate mk4 Mondeo with the same engine pulled 210 on the 1st run. I then had it modded a little (sports cat, exhaust and induction kit) it finally pulled 281bhp and 431Nm torque. I now need a new pair of front tyres once a year
These are basically the 2.5t ( or lpt ) spec engine as used in the xc70 2.5t - i.e **small turbo**, which was rated by volvo at 210hp. This is why they make strong torque from no rpm and run off a cliff at 5k. It is **not** the same spec of hardware as a focus st etc for instance.. At 140k and good servicing, this engine is hardly run-in.
@@timbo19751975 That is not correct, this is NOT the LPT engine used in V70/XC70, it is in fact the same exact engine used in Focus ST. The code if in a Volvo would be B5254T3. I had a V50 T5 with this exact engine and can confirm what a torque monster it was! The acceleration from 50-70 on the motorway was just nuts and a party trick I found was you could start off in 6th gear from rest (admittedly slipping the clutch a little to get moving) and it would easily go all the way to top speed (on a private road obviously) and it would potter around town in 3rd gear with no fuss whatsoever. Brilliant engine and have a V70 now. The noise is just the best - and I do love a good V6 and V8. I also had an Focus Mk1.5 ST170 and found it hugely disappointing and slow. Definitely not 170bhp. I had a Mk1 1.8 Focus Zetec which felt much nicer and lighter to drive.
That's a great car. I had a mk4 Mondeo XR5 with the same engine and it was a delightful cruiser, burbly on the overrun with an aftermarket exhaust. Got surprisingly good fuel economy on the gallop too.

It's funny that a people carrier is the quickest car on the board at the moment. It's making what the book figure is on my Saab weirdly. You gotta get a Focus ST with the same engine on there to compare, Tasty Classics has one 👀
@UPnDOWN or will the question nag you quietly, persistently for the rest of time? 🤣 - I believe (though I don't have any imperical evidence) that you need a good chunk of 98 in there for the car to pick up the fuel octane difference and make the adjustments - never really noticed the difference in any of my Volvo's on the road tbh and I've had three different variants of that 5 cylinder block in various cars.
@UPnDOWN the euro 3 model was slammed by bad gearing then the euro 4 model was slammed with emissions standard and made them really under powered like the 1.25s but would really cool to see the differences between all the sigma engines in terms of power numbers because the euro 3 model 1.4 had the best power bound of the all the sigma mrk 6 engines then I believe the based the 1,6 of the 1.25 engine?? If I remember correctly if not the 1.4 cuz they used the 1,4 for some other ford engine like the puma 1,7 engine ect and list goes on I really find ford sigma interesting
"Area under the curve" and all that. Lots and lots of lovely driveable heft all the way to 5K. Quattro growl too. Naughty and delicious, just how I like... things. Cake. Chocolate. Engines. That sort of stuff. It would be interesting to put your new OBD reader gizmo onto this and look at the boost pressure and valve actuation. Because the engine looks good for just over 220 at 5750rpm, but something odd seems to be happening. I guess the valve is normally PWM actuated and is getting a little bit over-enthusiastic and over-bleeding at 5000-5500. The flatline at 5500+ looks about right, just consistently 10hp low. A worn turbo would normally just gradually lose interest in a fairly smooth way. Not that it is worth doing anything mind you. Just for curiosity.
@@timbo19751975 That was not specific to Ford, since over time Volvo started using Ford platforms. I think the first modified engines went into S40/V50 which was based on the same platform as the Focus. One very obvious modification is that the location of the top engine mount was changed. In the original design used in Volvo's own platforms that were devloped before Ford bought Volvo Cars, it's located right on top of the engine. Reasonably easy to change, which is good since it has a habit of going bad. As far as I know all of the engines were made in Skövde, regardless of if they went into a Ford or Volvo.

Modern Diesels have so many issues with the emissions control systems especially the EGR that I just dont want to deal with them anymore. There is also the issue of random things failing on an 18 year old car like right now the coolant lines to the heater core are rotted out and the car looses coolant every time it gets driven for longer periods and there is a fuel pressure code and occasional long start and weird running at idle, most likely the commonrail fuel pressure regulator is responsible for that. Problem is the coolant hoses are like 100€ each and can only be bought from Volvo and they are on backorder for weeks. My garage told me no luck with getting used hoses or rigging something up with other hoses that fit. The fuel pressure regulator is 150€ too. It also technically needs a serpentine and timing belt + idler and tensioner job this year and the elephant in the room is the fact that it needs a complete intake cleanout on account of the EGR clogging everything and a swirl flap job and thats a big one needs all injectors pulled to take the intake manifold off. So it all adds up. Something less than 10 years old VW or Skoda with an 1.0 or 1.5 EA211 engine in it would be the perfect next car for me.
