  • Hey loves! This week takes us to Stewart Island, to hike the Southern Circuit Track- a 4 day hike that involves lots of mud, just as much rain, a decent amount of climbing and a ton of blisters, but it also gave us some beautiful scenery, incredible wildlife, and a whole heap of adventure- so slip on your walking boots, we're going for a hike.

I first walked the southern circuit in 1987.They use to maintain it back then..In 2007 it was in a shocking state.I would be lying if I said it wasnt tough.I see theres no change. But as they say at the Island.Mud is good character building stuff and as for the rain.Well you need the rain to wash the mud away.
The walk through the ancient forest with moss underfoot is always a highlight and a welcome relief from the mud.Nice to hear a few Kaka as well.Mason Bay is an incredible stretch of beach too.Glad you still enjoyed it.

So sorry for the insanely slow response, but wow amazing, would have loved to have hiked the trail back then, shame they don't maintain it so much now, but like you say, it all adds to the adventure😅 And we still had a great time, its such a beautiful island, and kinda nice that it still feels so wild, thankyou so much for following along🥰🫶🏼

Great you got to see kiwi in the wild.
Why did you both have feet problems? New shoes? Because of the bog and wet feet all day? Or feet not trail toughened?
    Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Thank you so much watching💗 I think it was a mixture of all three tbh, mainly having new, wet shoes though, we made the mistake of buying cheap shitty boots, to get us by, but we learnt from that mistake haha😅

@@ShelbyandJordan I see. It's a tempting mistake to make, and even then expensive shoes can still cause issues. Ahh well, hopefully summer time is providing you with some drier tramping adventures (with the exception of the past few weeks, depending on where you are in NZ).

Very true! We've upgraded to some more trail runners now instead, we find they don't ever seem to rub compared to boots, which is amazing! Plus we're living in Wanaka atm, so the weather has been very kind to us, which also helps, so very grateful for that too! Hope you're getting some lovely summer weather where you are too, thankyou so much for commenting💖

Nice record of your muddy trip! Is the track reasonably easy to follow? Thanks

Thankyou so much for watching! I'd say the track is definitely pretty easy to follow, it's fairly well marked, but in the case you can't see any markers, there tends to be a decent amount of footprints to follow instead😊

We definitely weren't trail fit haha, the first couple days on the circuit we found pretty tough tbh! Looking forward to hopefully building our fitness back up

It really sucks when people try and avoid the mud - you just make the bog wider and destroy the surrounding vegetation/habitat.
It would be nice if people weren't so selfish.

100% agreed, it's a real shame how much vegetation gets destroyed, we noticed this alot on the TA
