I’m on my third Shih Tzu. They live about 14 years. Barking is an alarm and seldom more than “bark, bark”. They are arrogant rather than stubborn: truly royalty. Giving them a job to do alleviates separation anxiety. Enjoy life together and remember they are more than “just a dog”!
My ShihTzu is amazing he is 16. He rarely barks, never has eaten poop. Is a picky eater ,but not ruled by food. He is a diabetic medical alert service dog and super smart, has been retired the last 3 months. But still alerts to too low or too high blood sugar levels. He doesn't understand the word retirement. He has been the easiest dog ever in my life. ❤
I was gifted a 5 year old Shih Tzu a couple of years ago, he's absolutely adorable, glad to say that he doesn't eat poop, he's very quiet and loving, and he would follow me through the fires of hell to be by my side. The latter may come in very handy one day - just sayin! People tell me that he's well trained as he's always well behaved around roads (he doesn't even have a lead when we go out), people and other dogs - but the truth is, I haven't (and his past owners haven't) trained him... we just have this mutual respect and trust. It's so special to have such an amazing little pooch. xx
This is my 5th shihtzu and I am 68. My first shihtzu I had when my daughter was 3 and sons were 6 and 8. Gizmo and he was perfect with them. He was dressed in baby clothes and loved laying in a doll stroller on rides around the house and he napped in a wooden doll bed with a small mattress with blankets. We were careful we watched to make sure he was not ever hurt or played with too much. He was my most cherished pup and all have eased my anxieties. My children never abused them, they were walked and brought to groomers and went camping with us and on our travels. They were part of our family. My little boy now is my treasure. I cannot say enough good things about owning a shihtzu. They are clean, fun and loveable. You can learn to groom them yourself as well. I've done that too but these dogs are my treasures and my treat is to have them groomed. As far as food goes I feed my little guy science diet. He is doing well and my vet is happy about his growth. Ya he likes poop so ya gotta pick it up. Vets don't know why they do it. Other dogs do it as well. Vets don't have an answer for it. So don't be turned off on these little treasures. They are beautiful, cuddly balls of pure love.❤❤❤😊
It's wonderful to hear about your long and loving journey with shihtzus, especially how they've been cherished members of your family and brought so much joy and comfort over the years. Your experience really highlights the special bond and the irreplaceable role these furry companions can have in our lives. ❤️🐶😊
They are absolutely adorable. They love all people kids included and make me smile so much. I am 76 and have had 5 over the years. They live till about 12 13 years old and don’t shed
Many of your general comments are true. I find my shihtzu easy to train she know twenty commands at five months already, Also this is my second shihtzu and neither one was yapping no excessive barking at all.
Our family learned him to be alone longer amount of times multiple times a week. Actually he didnt bother at all. I actually think theyre pretty intelligent. At least mine but I think not everyone understands them. Theyre just not prone to listen and training them might be hard. The first weeks he kept biting everyone in the family. At one moment he grabbed me and I grabbed him as first to let him feel shocked for a second. Never grabbed someone after it. I think theyr just not trainable, u can only stop them from biting, barking and that kinda things, wait for food if u wish i wouldnt bother them to wait for a signal other then just wait till i finished filling their bowl. But really training.. then buy another dog. Btw i think theyre intelligent because they understand too good what they get away with if we dont watch him for instead and what he shouldnt do in front of us 😂😅. But i like that, it gives you the feeling of being a bad boy in high school, breaking a rule somekinda that.
My Shih Tzu rarely barks. If they aren't taught to bark and don't pick it up from hearing other dogs, they don't usually learn to bark. Even with my neighbor's Shih Tzu barking so much, mine stays quiet. Lucky me.
I have had two Shih Tzu’s in my life And one of the biggest similarities that you should always keep in mind is that they are very routine oriented. They tend to cling onto your natural routine, but seem to become either stressed or depressed if that routine is repetitively disrupted, or ignored. So just keep that in mind if you notice your Shih Tzu‘s behavior out of whack.
Mine is mixed with Yorkie…stubborn is an understatement! Butterscotch has a lot of Shihtzu qualities but the Poo one isn’t one of them. This little Princess wouldn’t dare go near another dogs poo🤣🤣🤣🤣
They are the pickiest eater's and very stubborn but their absolute loyalty and cuteness more than make up for it. They are high maintenance though for sure
I have a Shorkie (Shih tzu and Yorkie mix) he is mostly Shih tzu. He is stubborn and a picky eater. He is loving, smart, easy to potty train. Thank God, he doesn't eat his 💩. He follows me everywhere and yes, he sleeps in my bed! Oh yes, he is spoiled rotten and I am so glad he's mine. I love my little fur baby.🐾🐾💙
My Malshi....maltese and shih tzu is a character. He will be seven months old January 3, 2024. He is lively and so darn cute however the royalty trait kicks in when he wants something. We love him
K my shitz tuz. Is my therapy dog. He doesn't whine, cry or bark. And he'll help the burglars with your silverware to the car and then give them kisses. And he's a pure bred
I would like to own a Shih Tzu dog but I am worried about ticks and fleas. How do you prevent your dogs from fleas and ticks ? I would like to keep my dogs in my home but bring it for walks whenever I can.
Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos are the most amazing dogs and I wouldn't be without. MIne has never eaten any poo. There is a biggie that wasn't mentioned - they are prone to DDD Degenerative Disc Disorder which is why you should never let them jump down from beds, sofas, cars etc.
My Malshi as a baby learned to use steps to run up and down the couch. He gives us a lot of laughs and we love him so much. We have had him since he was eight weeks old and now he's one year old. They can be trained but it takes time. Many repetitions and rewards are the key to them learning commands, but yes they are able too. ❤ No problem with pooh either he likes his area outside cleanup immediately 😊
I'm getting an 11 month old shihtzu who's trained and vaccinated but i don't know if he's old or i should get an 1 Monty or 1 week puppy, I'm trying to learn what to provide
I have a rescue shih Tzu from a puppy mill, she has been to the vet and is healthy she will be spayed next week, my question is when brushing is it necessary to get the undercoat out,it seems like alot !!
For a Shih Tzu, regularly brushing out the undercoat is important to prevent matting and maintain the health of their coat, especially if it seems plentiful
There's no rile that matches any breed to the T. My girl shih tzu had a huge problem with feces when sje was young, my boy didn't. It depends on the dog. But definitely not every shih tzu is the same
I have a shih tzu/westie mix. Mitzi is mostly shih tzu though. I have to say, I can't agree with your statement that you should get a shih tzu from the breeder.... I fully believe in adoption from a shelter, and that's where I got my Mitzi. She is the BEST dog a person can have. I also disagree that they are high maintenance... they need to have a bath and haircut every four to six weeks (I'd categorize that as LOW maintenance!), but unless you're showing your shih tzu in dog shows, you don't even have to take them to a groomer. I learned to bathe and clip my shih tzu quite easily, although I must admit my Mitzi is quite the diva and stands perfectly still while I dry her hair and groom her. And yes, Mitzi can be stubborn at times when she wants to do something that I don't want her to do, but she usually comes around to obeying me... eventually. But she has never eaten poo (thank goodness!). I have potty trained her to use reusable pads as well as going outside, just in case I can't get home in time to let her out. That has worked extremely well, as she rarely has an accident anywhere in the house because she has her potty pads available. She has recently turned into a picky eater though, and will only eat a certain kind of dog food and no others. She is an excellent watchdog (I tell her she's my "Security Officer #1") and only barks when someone or something is in HER yard or at the front door (she may also bark at a loud noise outside, but that's about it!) Just last week she scared away a solicitor who apparently couldn't read my "no solicitors" sign on the door... and got him to leave just by barking at him when I opened the door! LOL... she got some REALLY good treats (she loves pig ears and bully sticks) after that happened!! Good doggie!!! So unless you're into getting show dogs from breeders, check out your local shelters (or petfinder.com) first, especially if all you want is a good companion. The perfect dog is waiting for you to adopt at your local shelters!
Not really, my Shih Tzu was such a cute gentle quiet dog, I think dogs are like a humans with all different personalities, they're a kinda muddy but again it depends to that particular cure personality, my dog was really adorable and behaved all the time, they never disappointe us for having them ♥️🥰👍
My friend rarely gives her shih tzu high quality food.she just gives him biscuits (rarely) and gives him whatever is made in their home and her doggy never gets any problem.i thing it's all about what habits you give to your shih tzu
She may seem healthy now, but TRUST ME it's not at all good in the long run. I have seen/heard so many cases where dog owners would feed their dogs vegetarian food or table scraps and with age their dogs' health would just keep deteriorating.
Yip, try 'positive reinforcement' dogs function on this. If ya pooch poops inside, just casually get up and clean it up, say nothing to the dog (the worst thing ya can do here is to tell um off or start screaming at them, cos they just ignore you), and just carry on as before. Now, when ya doggo is outside and they poop/pee, let them know, either with treats or petting, and tell them they are a good boy/girl. This way, ya pooch soon learns that if they toilet inside then they get nowt, but, if they do it outside then they get treats and cuddles. Hope this helps xx

Shi tzus need private time for themstelves. No need for constant pampering or holding in the lap. They are VERY INTELLIGENT AND hence STUBBORN because THEY know better.
