What troubles me is this: I'm a widow with two kids under 10...I desperately want to homeschool and help round them out and still be able to critically think the list goes on! But, how am I to do this when I've to work to support us? It seems unattainable and I find that pretty distressing at this point. Any suggestions? Serious ones. KIND ones?

@@ItsFreshItsAnne I just wrote a research paper for school about how children are more likely to be abused or neglected in childcare. Unfortunately there’s not much of a solution that I could find besides having a family member or trusted caretaker he responsible for a child. I wish there was a better solution for those who can’t homeschool.

@ItsFreshItsAnne work at home jobs. You could even run a at home daycare. Find something to sale at farmers markets, or and craft fair. That is in high need. Find a job that is 12hr 3 days a week and Split some of the teaching and children care with someone you trust. You can always put up cameras for extra protection.

I'm a former teacher (quit right before COVID to be a SAHM) and I didn't get offended by her comment because it honestly sounded to me is they were talking about specific teachers they had. And if you are lucky enough to say you never had a bad teacher, good for you 🤷‍♀️ I think most of us can think of at least one that was terrible.
On the other hand, teachers are very much abused by the system at the moment. Kids get away with murder in schools. A kid sent my coworker to the hospital and he was back in her classroom 2 days later. So you don't want to exactly send a message to kids to disrespect teachers more than they already do. Majority of teachers mean well, but that doesn't mean as a parent you shouldn't be aware of their bias and what they are teaching.

As a teacher, who grew up homeschooled, my takeaway is:
    1) you shouldn’t say f-any career. You have every right to be wary based on your experiences, but f-(fill in career here) is immature
    2) are there bad teachers and schools out there? 100% yes. Are there also good ones out there? Also yes. Is it possible the schools in her area are ones she doesn’t want to send her kids to? Sure.
    3) she has a right as a parent to decide the best place for her children to be educated
    4) homeschooling done right is a beautiful and healthy thing. It has things schools don’t, just like schools have things it doesn’t. Frankly there’s no universal fit, it’s really individually based
    5) as Brett pointed out, not everyone has the personal circumstances that allow for homeschooling. It’s so important people respect that every parent is doing the best they can with the circumstances they’re given. Instead of bashing that, let’s support them and the various careers out there.
Thank you as always for being reasonable in your response Brett!

But our son, who is now 29, tells me that it was the best experience he had. He graduated High School at the age of 16 and immediately went into our local college, got a 2-year degree by the age of 18, and is a happy, well-adjusted, very social young man doing a job he loves. He told me that he plans on homeschooling his kids when he has them. So if you're thinking about homeschooling...DO IT! No one else's opinion matters.

That said, a lot of teachers are people who failed to achieve their dream job and then turned to teaching as an acceptable backup. I really think there should be higher standards for teachers and higher compensation to make it a career people actually aspire to for reasons other than helping kids. Same with cops. While my friends were sitting in a classroom getting picked on by their classmates and steam rolled by their teachers, I was going on field trips with my 4-H group & with my family. I feel like I was more socialized when I was homeschooled than when I was in public school. I went back to public school in high school, a lot of my trauma came from that. Of my life and if I could go back in time I would ask my mom to continue homeschooling me. As far as my mother goes, she was not educated very far, she had a hard childhood, but thankfully we had Florida virtual school and i was able to learn everything I needed online or through academic books. I think a lot of people feel like they're not smart enough to home school their children, but they don't realize that there are homeschool groups, 4H groups, tutors, churches that have after school programs, etc. To help you out. A lot of places have homeschool discounts and you can go online to get different activities to do in your area for field trips that are educational.

Great episode, Brett. People losing their minds over this is ridiculous. I was homeschooled for the majority of my life. I can tell you none of my teachers from private school were good. They literally all sucked. And I definitely learned more and got a better education being homeschooled. I do know how amazing a lot of teachers are. But even the amazing ones are overworked and can’t possibly give the kids all they need. The education system is just so messed up. And I’m a daycare provider, so a lot like a preschool teacher in a lot of ways. I sacrifice my own time and money for these kids all the time. I thinking teaching kids can be one of the most selfless jobs out there. All that being said, my own kids will NEVER be in public school. They will either go to a good Christian school or be homeschooled. People who are losing it over what Meghan Trainor said need to get a grip.

I will say, as a teacher, it's nice to have set standards/expectations because if a child moves you know what education they've recieved. However, there are many ways to recieve that education and many literacy programs fall short. I have yet to meet a teacher who likes Lucy Caulkins which is a common reading/writing curriculum used in many schools. Schools really need to start listening to their teachers to find or adapt better curriculums.

Most of my family are teachers. And on a lot of occasions, they freely admit their peers are horrible at their jobs. And if you've been through education, you'll have worked out that a lot of teachers gave up decades earlier. Back in my day (and I'm technically a millennial), certain teachers were known for being physically violent with students. So the teachers' union, butthurt line about teachers being martyrs is false.
I appreciate it as a profession. I've seen teachers who work themselves into the ground. But I've had teachers who abandon class to talk about their pet political issues. I've had teachers who didn't have the assertiveness for the job. We've all had situations where you've been given a grade and when you challenged the marking, it became glaringly apparent that the teacher hadn't read your essay. It's the nature of distribution. Some teachers are good. A lot are average. Some are poor. And the incentives are horrible. There's a tension between self interest and making work. Unless you're willing to work yourself to death, you take shortcuts. If you tell admin 'everything is fine', then you can continue. But EVERYTHING is extra work, so there's a profound incentive to ignore when you know little Susie copied that essay. If a student is getting Cs but could easily get A's, there's an incentive to let things be. There are incentives to shuffle students through with dubious maths and literacy skills. The incentive attached to some interventions is losing 10 hours of time to fill out paperwork (that admin doesn't want to know about) OR getting yelled at by parents.
Some teachers are breaking their backs for their students. But the more common experience is people who know that their schooling failed them.

As a special Education Teacher in middle schools I am constantly reminded of the challenges our society faces and I know how hard the teaching profession can be. As a person who was homeschooled k-12 by a mother who did not even go to college, but who cared enough to educate her children in the best way she could, I know and love the value of homeschooling. As the granddaughter of an elementary school teacher I know the system has constantly changed for the worst and the politics are killing our ability to give children the best chances they can have at life. I've talked with many parents who do not feel that they could ever homeschool and for them I will be that teacher their child needs. I will support the families that homeschool their kids because they have the time and space to make the best education for their kids in their homes. I wish we could start over with the American education system, but I worry that the political crap that is involved will never be able to be weeded out. Our kids deserve to be respected and given their best chance at life.
I don't know if it is something you would address, but the schools up in alaska are having their libraries audited and certain books are being considered for banning. I don't agree with the whole list, but most of the books on the list that I have read have strait up sex scenes and I do not believe those are appropriate for our students to be reading. Kids should be kids. Innocence is good in children. Foster imagination and play in our children, not sexualization and political mind control.

As a homeschooler I have first hand experience with the backlash of my parents choosing this. It was made even clearer to me that this was the right choice for my family when I was talking to a friend the other day and I told her why we were pulled out of school. The main reasons were that my 2nd grade teacher told my mom and I quote “your daughter is smart and we don’t need to help her because other students need us more” which is not altogether horrible but then a boy in my sisters class at the same school threw a chair at a teacher and flipped the teachers desk. When I said this my friend says oh that’s normal and happens all the time at my school (she’s in private school which makes that even worse) so no when 4th graders are throwing furniture and 2nd graders are being written off because they are “smart enough” I won’t trust the public education system and I’m grateful to my parents every day for getting me out of there before it was too late.
Edit: I forgot to add that another teacher pretend to finger gun shoot kids during a code red drill after he had the kids hid under desks and stuff. (The rest is kind of a rant so just skip it if you don’t want to read it lol)
For as long as I can remember I have felt a lot more masculine, and I first heard about LGBTQ+ and transgenderism around 4 years ago and when I first heard it, I thought it was odd but it didn’t affect me so I just carried on with my life and education.
It was my friend who had brought it up at the time and how she brought it up and the conversation went something along the lines of “are you bent?” “What do you mean?” “Like, are you part of the LGBTQIA+?” “What’s that?” “You don’t know what it is?!? You need to research it, you’re totally trans” A month or so later she cut her hair short, changed her name and pronouns, identified as non-binary and said she was aro/ace, despite her having being in 3 previous relationships (two with boys, and one with a girl). She later also claimed to have various conditions, which she had never even remotely shown signs of before, including Tourettes, which she would use that as an excuse to hit and insult any of her friends who used her birth name or she/her pronouns. None of us really tried to make a stand against her bc we didn’t want to get hit/insulted, and I was indifferent while (as far as I know) everyone else supported her transition.
Fast forward 3 years (all of which with us getting more and more bombarded with her being woke as time went on) and we tried to talk to her about it saying that she shouldn’t use Tourettes as an excuse to hit people, or promote top surgery to us, more so me, when I had clearly stated that I was a girl, despite acting more masculine. I was the first one to confront her about this (about 6 months ago) so she stopped talking to me but our mutual friends still talked to her a bit for a while, but she tended to just stay with her LGBTQ friends in the year above so as far as I know she and our mutuals don’t talk anymore, although her friends in the year above will be leaving secondary school after the Summer holidays so I’m not too sure who shes gonna talk to after that.
I go to one of the top rated secondary schools in the UK and from what I’ve seen and experienced going to it, it leans more left wing. (For context, every school in the UK including private schools are not supposed to have any political bias). However, this isn’t surprising to me because Britain as a whole is quite left wing, despite having a Tory (Conservative) government at the moment. The school supports socially transitioning (I’m not sure about medically transitioning but it doesn’t seem to oppose it) and if we ever read newspaper articles, we only ever get shown left wing newspapers. We aren’t allowed to ask questions about anything to do with transgenderism even if we are trying to understand things. While I was on a coach to a football match I heard one of my teammates ask the coach (pe teacher) “(boy) is dating (girl) but (girl) came out as a trans boy, so is (boy) still straight?” to which was answered with “you can’t ask that”. For the record, i think the PE department is the least politically bias department at my school. Teachers also disapprove if we decide to disagree with any of their individual ideologies. This is very noticeable in subjects such as PREP (Philosophy Religion Ethics Preparation) which is basically understanding different viewpoints. This year I am lucky enough to have a pretty chill teacher but the bias is still there to an extent. A noticeable mention is the 6 (I think) days worth of PSHE lessons we have per year, which is basically teaching us about (for years 7-9) BLM, basic sex ed, LGBTQ+, dangers of being online, knife crime, drugs, disability awareness, etc. while in years 10-11 it is more BLM, more dangers of being online, more LGBTQIA+, more advanced sex ed, pornography, abortion, cancer awareness, taxes/banking, possible career paths, etc. PHSE is basically a mix of useful life skills such as how to do taxes or clearing up misinformation around cancer and government propaganda, lessons I’ve had including “how to accommodate for non binary people”, and “deciding to have an abortion”.
Overall, my school is very good, academically, as the teachers are fantastic at teaching, the lessons are engaging, and as a school, we get some of the top grades across the country, and I am grateful to be able to go there.
I know that there is a lot more bias in the USA, and I’m grateful to go to school where I do, but I believe that all schools should have no political bias.
Edit: I honestly didn’t think this would be seen by people but everyone has been so supportive so thank you so much.

@@shaunp9592 the whole point of parents and the human family structure is that your parents are the ones raising you and showing you how to be a functioning member of society. You’re supposed to learn more from your parents than from your teachers, because teachers are only meant to instruct you in the sphere of academia. A huge issue that has led to a lot of the cultural rot we now see is the very fact that people expect teachers to do far too much of the parents’ job. This guy didn’t learn more from his parents because *one* of them is a teacher, but because they’re his parents. Parents who don’t involve themselves actively in every aspect of their children’s lives until maybe adolescence are failures, and set their kids up to be the same.

I ended up dropping out of the Ed program at my school because the teachers were very pro-public school and did not hesitate to speak out against homeschooling in their lectures. However, by the end of Covid, one of these program heads was homeschooling her kids herself. Today, I work as a homeschool curriculum developer to create lesson plans and workbooks so that parents can confidently educate their children at home if they choose.
If you are considering homeschooling, but don’t know where to start, I highly encourage you to take a look at the many amazing curriculums published. Having had nearly a decade of teaching experience, I sympathize with teachers, but also think it is ironic to see the reaction against homeschooling.
Most teachers I have worked with recognize that parental involvement at home is one of the consistent measurable factors that impact student success. We recognize that students often thrive when they have parents invested at home. To then turn around and say that parents teaching their kids will ruin the child is ironic, when we recognize that the best students are the ones who have parents at home putting in hard work on behalf of their kids.
The math just doesn’t add up there.

I was homeschooled for a long time, and honestly it was one of the few things that my parents did right. They were not at all qualified, they pretty much had no idea what they were doing, they were not at all financially well off, and tbh my days were retry unstructured, but I grew so much more as a person. When I did start at a charter school in 7th grade the biggest difference between me and my classmates was that I was so excited to learn everything. I was thrilled to translate Latin text, talk about parabolas and graphing, write essays, and talk about scientific theories. But above all that, I didn't just take what people said for granted, and I still try not to. Tbh going through highschool dampened that ability a lot, because I had so many teachers who were just too exhausted to sit and debate with me and explain the why's of everything, plus some teachers who didn't want to accept that a teenager could point out something they had done wrong. By my senior year I was so tired too that I just did whatever I had to do to get good grades and pass. But those first few years of school, I challenged everything. I didn't accept anything until I knew that it was true and I could prove it, and it helped me actually understand and learn everything so much better.
Of course public school have the capability of teaching their students critical thinking, but most schools are environments that physically, mentally and emotionally drain everyone until they have no fight left, and everyone is just so exhausted, teachers and students alike. Homeschooling gives more opportunity for kids to do their own research and come to their own conclusions, and when the parent is really connected with their child they can have really deep conversations too. I may not have learned to read until I was 8 years old, but I learned so many other valuable things along the way.

Public School wouldn't allow him to use Cursive and would mark him off, for using it.🤦‍♀️ He was actually 3 yrs ahead of where his peers were, with his schooling. He became bored very easily. I had school provide me, with same books he had for classes. I was able to help with his work, as well as teaching him more, then he was getting in the classroom.
They started having all assignments done in Groups of 3-5 kids each. Ended up only 2 doing the work and rest receiving same grade, as the 2 who did the work. SMDH "Participation Grades" Wrong on so many levels. Not fair to the ones actually doing the work.😡

I taught my children math, science, history, etc, while their teachers glossed over the subjects and then handed out assignments. I have been teaching my children the whole time. Less than 20% of their education has come from their teachers. The school provided text books and then Chromebooks. That's pretty much all. The rest has been up to me.

They have all been extremely smart, kind, and caring people and not only that but way more adjusted and confident to the outside world than most kids that are in actual school buildings. My kids aren’t even old enough to go to school yet, but I’ve been thinking about homeschooling since they were born. Nothing against teachers I just don’t trust the way the world is going- and I’m in the south. If I don’t trust a baby sitter or a daycare with my kids how can I trust a school with a classroom of 30+? Not only that but one of the local school just had a teacher arrested for “inappropriate acts with a minor student” and the known bullying at these schools is just outrageous.

10+ year teacher here. There are good and bad workers in every line of work. Most teachers want to help students succeed, but with all the bureaucracy and pushes for certain agendas (whether those agendas are political or not), most teachers that want to do well by their students are figuratively handcuffed by choices that are not our own, but we are stuck with all the blame. Teachers that push ideologies in their classrooms that have no place anywhere near children and administrations that forces teachers to teach like pre-programmed robots without realizing that we have advanced professional degrees, are really creating a lose-lose situation for truly good teachers and their students. The good ones are leaving as quickly as possible (we aren't used to being robots), unfortunately leaving more and more bad teachers spreading inappropriate nonsense to vulnerable children, only making this whole problem even worse. If I were a parent, I'd be homeschooling my children. Will every parent do well with homeschooling? No- there are good and bad workers in every line of work- including parenting. But we shouldn't throw out the entire idea just because a few might mess it up- this goes for homeschooling, regular teachers, cops, etc. We need to fix the broken systems and we need to fix our broken culture.

I was homeschooled basically through kindergarten through Elementary, so grade 8... I went to the local high school down the road from where I lived and absolutely hated it. I hated how disorganized everything felt, the lession plans from the teacher I often felt taught me nothing at all, rushing from one class to another was unnecessarily stressful on all the students, classes also never felt long enough to really get my head into the subject, because just as I felt like I was getting there the bell would ring and I'd have to run to my next class.
As for homeschooling, yeah my mom wasn't the best teacher, but she did her best and the books were awesome at explaining so she didn't have to be an expect for me to learn algebra or biology, chemistry, history or any other subjects. I am a second grade teacher. I agree with what you said, but I feel like you might have missed the point on teachers went from heroes to villains with Covid. Many teachers were 50/50 about going back at that time and most teachers are not a part of the unions anymore because they really don’t do anything for us. What that person meant was people finally respected us and realized how much we really do for their kids. For example, I had a student who would often misbehave, struggle In class and the mom would not believe me. She thought her son was perfect and perfectly capable of school work. I did my best for this kid and he did so well, but after the pandemic 😷 she apologized for not believing me about her sons behavior and capabilities of on level school work. After that, she finally worked with me for extra support. After parent involvement and respect, we worked together and he went from kindergarten reading level to 2nd grade level. Teachers finally got support from certain parents, again not all parents, but the difficult ones. It was really nice, but only lasted a little bit. I do think teachers were overly emotional with Meghan trainer. I hear people say f*** teachers all the time. I don’t really understand the crucifying of Meghan trainer. I work in a red school and district so maybe my perspectives are different than most? Have a great day! You can in the US as well. Many many teachers get personally offended by it (my belief) is two main things: 1) they’re fearful of their place of authority being unnecessary and 2) they spent a lot of time and money getting their degrees and are offended that anyone would think their way is anything other than the ONLY right way to do things.
In my opinion it’s a consequence of the idea that credentialing (degrees, certs, etc) are the ONLY ways to get into and thrive in certain fields. Similar prejudice in medicine (a field I would argue minimum licensing is very important) is the whole MD vs DO schooling. I’ve personally seen and worked with plenty of MDs who openly have spoken resentfully about DOs being quack medicine educated. (Categorically not true.) Its weird, but it’s out there.

I taught as an assistant teacher during late 2019-summer 2021. The place I worked did not require a degree for that position, but I was the only one at that school who had not yet finished college. The horrors of working there would take me days to talk about. Granted, much of it was poor leadership, but a lot was just “how things are”. Having been homeschooled for all of my education (minus 2 years and some preschool) and having been surrounded by the extreme homeschoolers who were graduating 2 years early and doing advanced college courses in high school, and also not being very good at maths, I had always assumed I wasn’t very academically intelligent. So it was a huge surprise to me when I worked at this school and realised that I actually knew far more than my peers there, and even in some cases more than women who had been teachers for years. Several discussions and papers showed that I was better in grammar, spelling, vocabulary, geography, and critical thinking/logic. I was also more articulate in facts and political topics that arose, and I was definitively better in basic daily tasks such as organisation, cleanliness, and motivating the children to be excited to learn to read and write. I took some of the lowest scoring children in the class and I got them excited about their work to the point that several were highest scoring. My co-teacher repeatedly complimented me on these things and told me she had never worked with anyone better, and she would give me important emails to look over and re-word or edit to be more diplomatic when they were difficult subjects to raise to the management of the school.
I no longer think I am bad at academia or question my ability to learn and apply information.
I also do not care how poor my family might seem to others - I will be homeschooling my children. As well as running my own business and being a trad wife, by the way.
