Hikari skidded backwards. She had managed to hold on to her blade but it was close. She felt as though her arm had been struck with an iron mallet. She was the Spirit of Light, nothing on this plane or any other should have been able to move faster than her! She grimaced inwardly. Of course, there was one exception. And it was stepping toward her from the shadows that it had initially struck from. It was Time. Hikari failed to mask her irritation, and surprise. "Reitan? What are you doing? What is the meaning of this?" She said trying to keep her voice level. The triangular halo over her head flickered through various colors as emotions warred for dominance in her mind. There were gentle clicks, like the ticking of an elaborate clock, as Reitan stepped forward. She did not speak. She did not acknowledge Hikari's words. She simply approached, like the inexorable march of time. Her twin blades, _Hour_ and _Minute_ held in a firm grip. Hikari did not understand, but she knew now that what had happened to Honou and Tenku had been the work of the Time Spirit. If she wanted to find out why, she needed to survive this, *and* capture Reitan into the bargain. Her main advantage, speed, was nullified. Reitan's mastery of the flow of time meant that very few people would be able to land a blow on her under any circumstance. Hikari would have to trust to her technique and pray that something could grant her an opening. Her resolve glowed in her red eyes. There was a flash as she extended her powers, it turned the plaza into a flat white expanse. Hikari was moving, space seeming to flex around her as she lanced her blade forward and struck out at Reitan's chest. But, as quickly as the attack was launched, it was deflected. _Hour_ swept up to almost lazily push the Spirt of Light's blade aside. Hikari's eyes were wide as she struck again and again. Each blow turned aside as easily as if she had been moving in slow motion. A dark aura began to fill the plaza. It slowly circled the dueling Spirits and closed in ever tighter. Between ringing strikes, delivered with the speed and force of lightning bolts, Hikari saw the darkness creeping closer. It was overwhelming her essence and smothering the light in this place. She could feel her limbs growing weak as she tried in vain to gain the upper hand against a foe she knew she could not defeat. The darkness crowded in closer, half obscuring Reitan in its penumbral embrace. Hikari struck again, and felt the deflected attack vibrate up her numbed arm. Her blade was pulled from her grip as the dark closed in around her. She tried to pull back, to retreat, but it was already too late. Hikari screamed as she felt a sudden burning in her flank. It was followed by an icy numbness she had never known in all her centuries of existence. It robbed her of her breath, her voice, her calm. She looked down in a panic and saw _Minute,_ its short blade covered in her blood. The world suddenly snapped back to its normal speed as her senses began to flee along with her consciousness. She was collapsing, and Reitan was muttering something she could not understand. The dark swirled around her, inside her. And she was lost to it. ----- As the dark fog ebbed from the plaza Reitan knelt down and picked up the glowing silver crystal that had once been Hikari. She placed it in the pouch at her hip. 'Three ought to be enough', she thought. It should demonstrate to the others her resolve to carry this deed to it's completion. Hopefully it would convince them to surrender themselves quietly. For the briefest moment of time her thoughts lingered on Haru and the image of her friend's smiling face flashed in her mind's eye. But she hardened her heart. If Haru or any of the others refused to submit, then they would be defeated the same as Hikari. She turned her expressionless face to the dark figure waiting for her at the plaza's edge.
