Cheers Billy!! Always happy to help. Great chapter 1 in the life of your Carmona. I think everyone who's serious about tropical bonsai should try their patience and resilience against a Carmona. You've done a good job keeping it alive despite root pruning and a scale infestation in the same season. Mine somehow gets the scale insects back again once a year, gotta notice and get rid of them before they get too widespread. Looking forward to chapter 2!!
This is from the same place you got your bigger one last year, just a few weeks later. Now that I’ve got a season under my belt and a better understanding of what to look out for, I’m hoping to propagate next season, for sure.
Great video Billy! I also am working off of Dave's advice.. so far so good. Bugs are a yearly thing.. jump on it quick and repeatedly (soapy water for me) before it goes backward.
Glad to see you in the "call Dave @BlueSkyBonsai " phase, we've all been there! In fact, I think I'm technically still in it! What. journey though, this thing's been around the block and back. I'm sure once those roots get going it'll put on all sorts of new growth. Cheers buddy, keep cranking.
A really enjoyable video and if it helps I failed miserably trying to keep one of these alive. Bugs was a big issue for me too. I think it is looking pretty 😊
Hey Xavier! Thank you for the watch and comment, good sir. I’m sorry yours did not make it. And yes, a real magnet 🧲 for the critters! I’m hoping I’m finally on top! (Just in time to bring some new bugs inside for winter, hehe)
What a lovely, frustrating species. Really love the trunk - lots of possibilities if the tree cooperates. No direct experience, but from reading, it sounds like the tree can drop folliage if it doesn't get enough bright indirect light - especially in winter. Maybe supplemental light might help. The supplier/grower that you bought from may have some extra tips. Best of luck!
Well thank you, SueB! I always dig your comments. It’s been under growlights in the grow tent since Solstice 2022! But I had some growing pains in the first year, lots learned, trees paid for it. Only one ☝🏼 real casualty though, so 👍🏼. Hoping I’m dialed in for chapter 2 🤞🏼
@@baldyeti Lol - totally can relate! To my eye, the bendy trunk gives the option to use the tree's full length in the design, or just the lower part of it. Using the full trunk would form an interesting line with branches and folliage pads coming from the outer curves. Using just the first curve would allow for quick development of taper and allow you to grow the tree in whatever style you want. Once the tree is healthy, I think it will guide your decision. Herons Nursery website has several photos of styling options under the 'inside bonsai tree' section. Best of luck!
Mine lasted 3 years. I had the same fight, just no bugs. It would do great, then die back, then one day the reaper came for it. I was sad. Then I got over it and have not tried again. Maybe one day🤷🏼♂️
I think it might be better to do foliage before roots. If the tree is using all of its roots to support what foliage it already has, and you go in and take away half, its going to be hard to support that same amount of foliage. I'm relatively new to the fukien still myself. I trimmed foliage and left roots alone. It's been packing on new growth the last few months. Good luck!
I’m hear Collin music on this one. Nice!!!!
Heck yeah!
I sure hope he doesn’t start upping the price to use his material 😉
+1 also enjoyed Colin's wonderful guitaring.
Hell yeah!!
I thought the music sounded familiar! Noice
The one and only BBI
Do you get the chance to hang out at Passive and support him live?
@@baldyeti no, that would have been cool though

Schucks…thanks Dave. Hopefully I can keep up better this next season. She is lookin full and healthy right now. I sure do appreciate you, brother.
Ahhh, the finicky Fukien!!!!!! Best of luck my friend.
Thank you, good sir.
Great work on this Billy!
Hey! Thanks Matt
Nice to see you back in your greenhouse, btw.
I planted 5 cuttings of mine and 4 rooted. So new trees might be fairly easy with these. I didn’t do anything incredibly special, you know, I’m lazy…

@@baldyeti just brought mine inside for the winter. Overnight temps are in the 40s now. Fingers crosssed on another winter! :)

Perfect advice, thank you. I’m using soapy water as well now. And pretty regularly

Ha! What a good dude, you know?
I’m hoping chapter 2 will be a bit smoother. We’ll see if the bald bastard actually learned anything.
The finicky Fukien tree! Nice dome, where did you find that?
I ordered it from internet. Arrived in a smiling box. I think I shared the link with you via Instagram, no?
@@baldyeti maybe I’ll check🤠
@@baldyeti you did, and I totally forgot😂🤣 whoops I’m an idiot😂🤣

Oh, and you spoke to the plethora of possibilities to go with the tree…
I have no idea where to go with this!

You’re probably right. That would have been a good idea.
