This is a great account of the story of the Highgate Vampire and its protagonists. Well researched and very thorough. Well done!!! Really enjoyed it. .. as teenagers we used to go to the cemetery the day before or after Halloween to avoid the usual crowds and the large police presence. We never saw anything and respected the graves. We just wandered around to get spooked. A couple of years ago I was driving towards the Gatehouse Pub late at night, I saw a figure crouched in the middle of the road, thinking it was a drunk or someone with mental health problems I slowed down and was going to ask if they were ok, I stopped by the crouched figure and got a better look. It was a lightly dressed person with very long hair that completely covered their face. I couldn’t tell if they were male or female, I did however feel very uneasy and was spooked as the figure was completely still. I drove off feeling that I didn’t want to talk to the figure as there was something telling me to leave well alone. I’m not saying it was anything paranormal, but I felt a strong sense that I needed to get away. I posted this story as a comment in another RUclips video relating to the vampire legend. I got a reply from David Farrant’s widow who said she had heard a very similar story about a very similar figure sitting in the road near the Gatehouse pub.

The logic is simple. If demons can possess and torment the living there's a good chance that corpses aren't exempt from demonic manifestation either. The guided tour of the West cemetery is a real must. The guides are great and give you a history of the cemetery and those buried there. It’s not the done thing to ask about the Vampire story. However on one tour I did mention it to the guide. Surprisingly she showed us a vault that was supposed to be the very vault that the vampire was reputed to have inhabited. I love the mention of the power of sacramentals on evil such as a vampire! Nice job on this story. I've been interested for some time and I think this is the most detail I've heard yet! Thank you!
The sacraments themselves do not determine one's salvation, that is works based teaching, but because they symbolize parts of Christ's ministry and resurrection vampires have an aversion to them not because of any power they hold in of themselves but rather demons hate that which they represent. As for my theories in regards to whether this entity was a vampire or not. Well I'm not sure, due to the amount of occult activity. It could be that it something else entirely. The Highgate vampire wasn't the typical pop culture type. It was described as a putrid and stinking corpse inhabited by a demonic entity which made it appear as though alive through puppetry, not the least bit glamorous. According to century old descriptions, the vampire torments and spiritually oppresses it's victims, draining them of both blood and energy. Causing as much paranoia and sickness as possible, the vampire's goal is to further pain and terror, whether it be man, woman, child, newborn, pet, and even livestock. No one is spared. It does not require blood to survive nor can it be killed because it's already dead, instead it must be exorcised. If such a thing were to exist there would be no question to whether or not it is truly demonic. The vampire on occasion is even said to sexually assault and mutilate it's victims in a horrific way, it is also said to spread horrible plagues, bad weather, and rat infestations. Wherever it lurks the air turns rigid cold and plants mysteriously die. When it returns to it's grave near daybreak alledged eyewitness accounts report that the earth around the grave opened up to swallow the corpse, patching itself together but leaving a pattern of identical finger-width holes down to the coffin lid. At around noon the vampire transfigures into a spectral form of mist and exits through the holes, once it feeds it regains physical form again. In Greek, Balkan, and Serbian lore, Saturday was held to be the proper day for exorcising vampires, for it was the only time during the week that vampires were confined to their graves or tombs. It was also said that those destined to be vampire hunters were likewise born on Saturdays. No explanation is given why, but probably because Saturday is the 7th day of creation on which God ceased his work. Even though the Church tried to change it to Sunday in honor of pagan traditions the original Jewish weekly Shabbat appears to still have power over the vampire. Since the sabbath day is holy the vampire dares not to venture out at this time. These details have caused many to speculate that the creature's very power is somehow tethered to it's grave.
