If it helps my Dad was baptised in a creek and seven of us made it. My wife of 45 years was one of 13 kids and they did their laundry exactly how you are doing it. When we married we put the first hot water in their house. The wood stove was the only heat in the winter. My wife grew up broke the glass ceiling and retired a CEO of a financial institution. You give me hope for the future. Thank you for what you are doing.
So much hard work..and so rewarding at the same time. I remember when I was young ( I'm over 60 now..well over..lol ) and lived on a farm with my family. The house was very old, and while we did have electric , we had no A/C or heating in the house. We used wood/coal burning stoves ( pot belly stoves in each room ) to heat the house in the winter, and a propane tank for cooking. We also had no running water..but we had a cistern near the house and a spring well out by the barn ( the old hand pump handled ones ). We carried drinking/cooking water to the house every day from the spring well. Remember the old bucket and ladle? Yep that was us..LOL. All our bathes were taken in galvanized tubs in the summer house ( a single room attached to the main house by a breezeway ), and our laundry was done in a wringer washer and hung out to dry. Frozen laundry in the winter was interesting to say the least. And last...we had an outhouse..but used a bucket in the winter due to the distance ( ya..fun times ). A lot of hard work goes into being self sufficient, but one day you guys will look back at all you've accomplished with fond memories of all the hard work and life experiences that got you there:)
Okay, clothes washed. So where's the clothes line? Something nostalgic about line dried clothes! Growing up on a farm, we washed clothes pretty much the same way except used a wringer washer with a metal tub for the "rinse" cycle. Also used a water hose to fill each. Clothes line was nearby, and it had 6 lines which were completely filled. Dried quickly on breezy, sunny days. Nothing beats line dried bedding! But there were days a sudden rain would come out of nowhere, and it was a race to bring in the laundry. Good memories!
Nothing like line dried sheets as soon as they are dry, I put them right back on the bed! Crisp and fragrant!! I live in a trailer court right now and am not allowed to hang out my sheets among other things. It’s one of the things I miss. Can't wait to move out of court!
I loved my Southdown sheep...My Dad bought me my first lamb when I was 6 years old in 1954....The following year he bought me the Champion fat lamb at the Central Washington Fair at Yakima for $25 and it was a Hamp/Suffock cross...My flock evolved to eventually be all Hamp/Suffolk cross which I still think is a great meat animal. I always wanted to be a sheep herder up in the mountains, with a sheep herder wagon, Australian shepard sheep dog, and my .22....What a great life your kids are going to have in Idaho!! Get them involved in a local 4-H club and they will have memories for life.
The white in the water is limescale, I'm pleased that you are filtering this, When you build your house I would suggest that you Nano the glass in your bathroom (Shower Screens) so the water won't turn your glass white as at that stage it is very hard to remove. I hope this helps :-) With your make shift toilet, if you use your post hole driller and drill a deep as you can get it and pour your waste into the whole you can then cover it up once half filled. It would also be better for the land. I hope that this is a good tip for you guys

Enjoyed every minute of that.. My husband, myself and our children lived like that for two years in Idaho's back country with no electric or water and an outhouse with no door.. I understand Jeremy's liking to use the bathroom winter and summer watching nature..And for our wheels we had a snowmobile (Enticer, long track) for approximately half a year.. Our 54 Chevy pickup waited about 54 miles from us for the dry months. I have come to the conclusion that a woman's very best friends are running water and a washing machine..My husband and I will have been married for 51 years very shortly. We have grown up together and I can honestly say life with him has been anything but boring.. I love the beginnings of your video's. You can tell that you love your life and where you are.. My heart literally aches with love for this state...and of course there are your wonderful video's

I guarantee Bessie is better than any new washing machine you can buy! Keep the ole girl running! Your channel brings back a lot of fond memories. We just completed our home build late in 2021. In 2018 we moved our family of 5 into a 32' RV (never had even spent the night in an RV before that!) and started building our home. Seeing this video reminded me of all the things I had forgotten about already, the chores and joys of bringing utilities to raw land. Honestly, it makes me want to do it all again... loved that part of our life!

Have you considered putting a tank in the loft to fill with water so you have gravity flow water when you don't want to start the generator? You could run the washer in the barn that way. I built a gravity flow water system in a friend's outbuilding and it works great. He connects a hose to a pvc pipe from outside the building that flows up to a tank 10 feet off the ground. I used a 55 gallon white food grade plastic drum. They are easy to find in the rural farm and supply stores. Much larger tanks are readily available. The loft creates a great opportunity for a gravity water system for when electricity is not available. Jeremy, Does your dump site have a containment system so rain water does not flow downhill from the dump site and spread E-coli?
Good to see a healthy connection between children and your animals. On our journey towards self-sufficiency, our consumer meat was beef, lamb, goat, pig, rabbits, and chicken. Larger animals were raised as a pair, selling one putting the other in the freezer. We also hunted and fished. Great life with everyone pitching in to keep things running smoothly.

My dad was a school teacher, a Baptist pastor, and our family had a radio broadcast. My mom was also a school teacher, played the piano for choir and music at the elementary levels, and also played the piano at church and taught Sunday School. Many an evening we sat in the car in front of the church, with it -20 to -40, waiting for a deacon to come unlock the church door. We covered ourselves with blankets, as the heater and defroster never seemed to work very well in the 60s. How times have changed for you guys to raise a family in the 21st century!
You could run your grey water to the garden/orchard once you get it all established that way it takes the strain off of watering so much manually. Just use natural soap

You could put down couple 2x4 s down to protect hose from being driven over If you choose could put in line filer for settiment so mot to accumulate in trailer plumbing
yes, we have tons of splitters (3-4 way) and water hoses going everywhere...we have a water well and also rural water...we placedsome 2x2's on either side of the water hose(s) that crossed our drive way...we figured out ...with 3 vehicles , we were busting lines...it has worked great and would sure take some of the grunt work away!
I did that for a year! It is MUCH cleaner than a water toilet, and the compost is GREAT. I have a grape vine growing near that and it is HUGE. The amount of grapes on that vine this year is IMMENSE!
that cone of shame is great when i was little my dad would also do all of the crap jobs and get the the water from a spring about 5 miles from home he did that for one whole summer till he got the artesion well dug and the septic system put in im now 51 yrs old and he has been gone for 2 yrs and its my job to dig up the septic system when needed fortunetly i havent had to do it since he passed away

Wondered about composting human waste.... Also wondered about dumping human waste in the environment.... Also wondered about the human waste as marking territory-- does the dumping attract or discourage wild animals. I'll have to ask Mr. Google. Lolllll.
@@-sstevens5444 The way he dumps it on top of the ground should be a good method, at least during the sunny season. As it dries in the sun, harmful bacteria should die off.
Lol I thought I was the only one did laundry like that sort of. When I lived in California it was during drought season in the summer and I had a small crack in my hose so it would leak all over the floor so I just set it outside the back door and I could do laundry and water the yard at the same time. My friend asked me if I am a hillbilly and I said whatever worksLOL. That’s because I am from Indiana and lived out there a few years.
Are you able to salvage at least the laundry rinse water to use else where. Plants, wash vehicles, water the lawn, etc? Didn't know if water was a precious commodity. God bless.
I think where they are is similar to where I am. Water is readily available. No need to salvage grey water. Definitely something to think of if you are in a drier area though.
Water IS a precious commodity! Grey water going into a tank or just diverted to the garden would be a lot of help on days its dry. I live in SC and we can go a month or more without rain so we make ever bit count. Stop thinking there's endless amounts of water. There's not!

When I was a Marine I spent most of my time in remote sites without enough power to operate a washing machine. As part of our equipment we had an old Maytag that we made into a hand crank/bicycle operated machine and it had a hand cracked rollers for squeezing the water out of our uniforms. It worked really good as long as we could get the water.
I’m enjoying your adventure and wanted to comment on your bathroom facilities. My mom and stepdad have been living in Burns Oregon for the last 19 years and they have the same type toilet. However, their design is a bit different. There’s the box, but the top plywood with the hole cut in is on hinges then the toilet seat is attached. So to take out the bucket, you lift up the seat/plywood top and lift out the bucket without having to pick up the whole box. It’s in a nicely insulated outhouse with electricity and the outlet is connected to the light switch so a small heater comes on when you turn on the light. Next to the toilet is the bucket of shavings and another bucket with the spare rolls of toilet paper. There’s a small wastebasket for carrying the used tissue to the burn barrel. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

In 2018 we moved our family of 5 into a 32' RV (never had even spent the night in an RV before that!) and started building our home. Seeing this video reminded me of all the things I had forgotten about already, the chores and joys of bringing utilities to raw land. Honestly, it makes me want to do it all again... loved that part of our life!

Have you considered putting a tank in the loft to fill with water so you have gravity flow water when you don't want to start the generator? You could run the washer in the barn that way.
I built a gravity flow water system in a friend's outbuilding and it works great. He connects a hose to a pvc pipe from outside the building that flows up to a tank 10 feet off the ground. I used a 55 gallon white food grade plastic drum. They are easy to find in the rural farm and supply stores. Much larger tanks are readily available. The loft creates a great opportunity for a gravity water system for when electricity is not available.
Jeremy, Does your dump site have a containment system so rain water does not flow downhill from the dump site and spread E-coli?
Good to see a healthy connection between children and your animals. On our journey towards self-sufficiency, our consumer meat was beef, lamb, goat, pig, rabbits, and chicken. Larger animals were raised as a pair, selling one putting the other in the freezer. We also hunted and fished. Great life with everyone pitching in to keep things running smoothly.

Just for your info... I grew up in southwestern Wyoming, having graduated from Big Piney High School. My dad was a school teacher, a Baptist pastor, and our family had a radio broadcast. My mom was also a school teacher, played the piano for choir and music at the elementary levels, and also played the piano at church and taught Sunday School. Many an evening we sat in the car in front of the church, with it -20 to -40, waiting for a deacon to come unlock the church door. We covered ourselves with blankets, as the heater and defroster never seemed to work very well in the 60s. How times have changed for you guys to raise a family in the 21st century!
You could run your grey water to the garden/orchard once you get it all established that way it takes the strain off of watering so much manually. Just use natural soap
But then you might grow funky vegetables........

yes, we have tons of splitters (3-4 way) and water hoses going everywhere...we have a water well and also rural water...we placedsome 2x2's on either side of the water hose(s) that crossed our drive way...we figured out ...with 3 vehicles , we were busting lines...it has worked great and would sure take some of the grunt work away!
I did that for a year! It is MUCH cleaner than a water toilet, and the compost is GREAT. I have a grape vine growing near that and it is HUGE. The amount of grapes on that vine this year is IMMENSE!
that cone of shame is great when i was little my dad would also do all of the crap jobs and get the the water from a spring about 5 miles from home he did that for one whole summer till he got the artesion well dug and the septic system put in im now 51 yrs old and he has been gone for 2 yrs and its my job to dig up the septic system when needed fortunetly i havent had to do it since he passed away

Lol I thought I was the only one did laundry like that sort of. When I lived in California it was during drought season in the summer and I had a small crack in my hose so it would leak all over the floor so I just set it outside the back door and I could do laundry and water the yard at the same time. My friend asked me if I am a hillbilly and I said whatever worksLOL. That’s because I am from Indiana and lived out there a few years.

I think where they are is similar to where I am. Water is readily available. No need to salvage grey water. Definitely something to think of if you are in a drier area though.
Water IS a precious commodity! Grey water going into a tank or just diverted to the garden would be a lot of help on days its dry. I live in SC and we can go a month or more without rain so we make ever bit count. Stop thinking there's endless amounts of water. There's not!

Only one old timer used the lime that I remember.

Thought: Lean to for the camper. That way you have that entire space for running, jumping and playing when it is frozen outside. Not to mention the projects that can be done such as benches, wall clocks 😉, dining table, coffee tables...etc. Lots of time and lots of furniture needs coming soon.

When I was a Marine I spent most of my time in remote sites without enough power to operate a washing machine. As part of our equipment we had an old Maytag that we made into a hand crank/bicycle operated machine and it had a hand cracked rollers for squeezing the water out of our uniforms. It worked really good as long as we could get the water.
Thank you so much for doing this. It’s not pretty, but practical and gets the job done. For ALL the things your dealing with. It’s temporary.

Check out the toilet that "off grid with Doug and Stacey" use, the same principal, but puts the waste into compost in 2 -3 years.
I’m enjoying your adventure and wanted to comment on your bathroom facilities. My mom and stepdad have been living in Burns Oregon for the last 19 years and they have the same type toilet. However, their design is a bit different. There’s the box, but the top plywood with the hole cut in is on hinges then the toilet seat is attached. So to take out the bucket, you lift up the seat/plywood top and lift out the bucket without having to pick up the whole box. It’s in a nicely insulated outhouse with electricity and the outlet is connected to the light switch so a small heater comes on when you turn on the light. Next to the toilet is the bucket of shavings and another bucket with the spare rolls of toilet paper. There’s a small wastebasket for carrying the used tissue to the burn barrel. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
