Look we all have to take responsibility for this, we have disagreed with government policy for decades. It does not matter who was in power, we have disagreed with decisions governments have made. Unfortunately we have only voiced our opinions with family and friends and who we see in market through fear of being seen as disruptive and outspoken. It’s in the British nature, not just in farming it’s country wide. The government want to build houses to house half of the rest of the world, it seams to me government want the farmers to finance that project and also obtain cheap land. I’m from a farming family, but my father was on that Normandy beach 80 years ago fighting for our way of life. He got through the war and came home and built a small farm and family. Unfortunately through effects of the war he went to his grave far too early. Now there is only one way forward and it is time for farmers and the country to stand up and be counted and make sure Starmer hears the disapproval. Also really think about, who you are going to vote for next time, because either of the parties over the decades I’ve known have never given farmers the respect and support they need.

Imagine a horrible situation hypothetically your father passes away and you inherit the farm, you have to sell 20% of your farm to pay the tax, then for some reason you pass away your son will end up in the same situation again.. we need to take on our governments head on, it's our land.. Farmers across Europe must unite.. if those recent protests across Europe where joined up our governments would have to listen.. WE HOLD THE POWER, we just need to grasp it.. support from Ireland ✌

A friend’s grandfather dies and the farm went to his wife then shortly afterwards she died and the two sons had to split the remnants but after two lots of Inheritance tax had taken most of it. They did then allow the passing between spouse were exempt but it appears to be going back to the same time. Tax is theft taken from what you work for which is taxed and they want everything from what you worked for.

The farmers that have sold up and left because they could no longer make a living. You have actual answered your own statement in your description about your village. Stronger farms have grown in size to keep your food cheap. To do that they look from the outside they are very wealthy but this is far from the truth. They now need to have large assets to make up for the farmers that have left. It seems you are not looking at the bigger picture. When they have all gone. The federal government is plastering our finest agricultural land with solar and wind farms. They are pushing transmission lines across great farming land with restrictions what the farmer can do. Hi Richard, I am a farmer in WALES same as you in grieve by this horrible situation. Yes you smashingly pointed it out, will done you! WE THE FARMERS do not earned COLOSSAL AMOUNT OF CASH!!What we earned goes back to the farm the equipment /machinery we used and bills are chasing if some machineries faulty. The HUGE TAX we have paid every year still not enough for them! YES, where the heck on earth we will get that huge amount of CASH TO PAY for that IHT THE GOVERNMENT asking from us FARMERS! I rented a patch of land so I can put more stocks but if the only option is to sell a patch of land and to think you're giving it away it's depressing!!No holidays just to save money for the farm, works 24/7 and if only this humanly body of a bloody farmer can go on working for 24hours without stopping we surely be doing so just to keep the farm in very well conditioned!!!!! And now this morning as I am going to livestock market my wife hand me £10.00 cash and she said go and eat lovely dinner at the market[as I always go home to eat as I am saving every penny ] before you save it for the farm and if ,it will only be going to an inheritance tax better you used it ,than your just wasting it by giving it away!

If your 58 and live to say 78 and save up £1miilion for your son to pay tax they’d take 20% of that leaving you only £800,000 so your’d need to save about £1.2 5mill. Over 20 years you’d be taxed on your saving out of profits (what profits?) and you’d need about £50,000 per annum to save after tax - I bet that’s a lot more than you actually make? If you live to 88 you’d “only” need about £30,000 per annum savings!
The government’s got every farmers tax returns. They can see for themselves that no one makes enough money to pay 20% inheritance tax out of profits and saving.
The government policies control low food prices so they also control the fact you can’t pay. Introducing this tax must be an ideological attack on ownership and envy as they must know farmers can’t pay so they must want you to have to sell up and don’t care.
The Prime minister and Chancellor both rent their homes out for more than most farmers earn but won’t pay much inheritance tax as it’s their main home. But they obviously like that they own property. Just not that you own yours!

Also if you have to sell off to pay you have a disproportionate amount of value in your house buildings stock and equipment over bare land value so you’d have to sell proportionately more land thereby reducing the farm so it’s not viable - which must also be part of the plan?

Stay strong and just see how this plays out over the next few weeks. Food security was a big thing a while back, what happened to that, we all need to eat and if the world goes even madder than it is now with trade restrictions etc or more wars then food imports could dry up, then what happens?? The UK should be able to grow enough food for itself. The last thing we need is to lose all the knowledge that all you farmers have, how crops grow in your area etc etc. This is a huge issue and should be treated as such by those in power.

Richard I really feel for you
As you know I watch a lot of youtube farmer's, I appreciate it's a way of life, with all the challenges and restrictions thrown at farmer's, at the end of the day a manufacturing business that experiences production increases, pass those costs onto their customers, so they can maintain a profit
You guy's are basically told what you can sell your product at regardless of increases or weather conditions, hence your asset was protected from these taxes
I fear, from all the recent policies, our government, regardless of political party, it's the civil servants that decide the muppets in parliament are just puppets, having their strings pulled. My point is, with environmental policies, ignoring flooding issues, paying for rewilding or bird feed over human food, passing planning on agricultural land for solar, wind, construction of retail outlets, housing and industrial estates, I fear our government want to demolish farming in favour of imports, so they can get their hands on import taxes
God help our food security, knowing we already can't feed our population, if another Ukraine situation were to arise, another conflict, will it be too late to call on our farmer's as we did during WW1 and WW2
The thanks for generations of feeding this country is to kill agriculture
I hope NFU will actually UNITE the farmer's to fight this policy but also to explain to the populous what this all means so you get the public backing you all deserve
    Geoff

    • @yorkshirefarming
      @yorkshirefarming  19 дней назад +2

Geoff, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comment. It's disheartening to see the challenges we face as farmers, especially with the increasing regulatory burden and the lack of control over our own livelihoods.
You're absolutely right about the impact of environmental policies and the push for renewable energy. While these are important issues, we need a balanced approach that doesn't jeopardize food security. It's frustrating to see farmland being converted for other uses, while farmers are struggling to make ends meet.
We, as farmers, are often caught in a difficult position. We're expected to be stewards of the environment, provide food for the nation, and maintain a profitable business. It's a tall order, and the current policies make it even more challenging.
I hope that the NFU will continue to advocate for our interests and that the public will support us in our efforts to ensure a sustainable future for British agriculture. Thank you again for your support.
