WHAT IS PPF?
PPF full form is Public Provident Fund, which is a government backed Saving Scheme. Many Indians invest in PPF and treat it as a retirement fund since it has a lock-in period of 15 years. Also it helps in saving income tax while claiming deductions under Section 80C (maximum deduction up to Rs. 1.5 Lacs in a financial year)
Features of PPF
- PPF or Public Provident Fund is a savings scheme offered by the Government of India.
- PPF has a lock-in period of 15 years
- Minimum deposit amount in a FY to keep your PPF account active is Rs. 500
- Maximum deposit amount for which you can earn interest in PPF account is Rs. 1,50,000
- The interest on the account is paid by the government of India and is set every quarter, It is also tax-free.
- PPF interest is calculated every month and is compounded annually
- The applicable PPF interest rate for Jan 2022 to Mar 2022, has been fixed at 7.1% annually.
- PPF or Public Provident Fund falls under EEE category (Exempt, Exempt, Exempt), which means, the Deposits, Interest and Maturity Amounts are all exempted from Income Tax
- Partial withdrawals are allowed in PPF account
- Loan facility is also available in PPF account
HOW TO MAXIMIZE PPF INTEREST?
When you deposit Rs. 1.5 Lacs before 5th April, you get maximum interest in PPF for that financial year
IS PPF AVAILABLE FOR 5 YEARS?
When you open a PPF account, there is a mandatory lock in period of 15 years, so you have to continue PPF account for 15 years. In case you want to deposit only for 5 years, than you should look for some other tax saving instruments like 5 year Fixed Deposits or ELSS (Equity Linked Saving Scheme)
After 15 years in PPF, you have the option to either close the account and take entire tax free maturity amount in your savings account, or to extend your PPF account for next 5 years, with or without deposits.
Extending PPF with a block of 5 years is one of the best solutions to earn more compounding interest in case you are not in a need of money for next 5 years.

1) What is the impact on compounding due to delay in interest credit.
2) Why EPFO interest credit process is delayed.

7.1% Interest is per year, not per month.
Months in a year (MY)= 12
Interest per month = 7.1/MY = 0.0059%
So, 1000 * 0.0059% = ₹5.9

Very well covered topic. Could you please tell what would be the accrued interest after 15 years @7.1% RoI, if 1.5 L is invested before 5 th of each month.
And if continued after 15 years without deposits, whether the interest for the extended period remains same for 5 years?
Is there any deductions if the amount is drawn in part during extended period?
Whether the amount parked after 15 years is entitled for 80C rebate ?

1. Please use PPF calculator to know interest on your amounts for 15 years: fincalc-blog.in/post-office-interest-rates-latest/
2. For extended period after 15 years without deposits, you'll earn interest on balance after 15 years. This interest will be added to your balance of 15 years to calculate interest on 16th year and so on (compounding effect), the interest amounts earned after 15 years will be different (will increase) due to compounding. Use the above calculator to know more by proving assumed amount in balance field.
3. There should be no deductions but there might be a limit to withdrawal
4. Yes 80C deduction is allowed after 15 years as well

After the 15-year maturity period, you can extend your PPF account in five-year blocks for an infinite number of times.

mera ek sawal hai .. if you see the final total investment 180000 out of which we got 315572 which means 315572-180000=135572 total profit. so (135572/180000)*100=75.31 % in 15 years . 75.31/15=5.02 percent hi toh mila annually ..please let me know if I am right or wrong..itna toh bank main mil jata hai ..
Good observation. But it's not that straight forward. The calculation should be done on monthly investment of 1000. The calculation you did is on the total amount and not the monthly amount. Still, in order to understand the power of compounding, just observe that if you start today with monthly investment of 1000, you will be getting 5.02 percent for an amount that you are to invest over 15 years.
