Buddy Rich was so into himself that he welcomed the opportunity to a drum battle against Gere Krupa due to the fact that Krupa, who had a terminal illness that eventually took his life was not up to par in this event. Rich knowing that, had a field day with this one-sided competition.
I heard that it was over a Girl Krupa was sweet on and later became Buddys wife Marie and he was Hood winked as he called it. He thought she was just a Great looking gal that loved Musicians he had no idea Gene was sweet on her. And when it became known it was too late she already was with Buddy that was the salacious competition that started. I have no idea if this is true
