  • Join John Jens and I for our first look at Australia's Greatest Rieslings. We look here at 6 wines (one from Mosel, that will become apparent in the video, and the reason for it is relevant) that have topped a recent and comprehensive riesling assessment of the greatest examples in Australia. When they are good, they are great - as these are!
The wines we open here (and their approx RRP's) are:
2019 Castle Rock, Porongurup WA RRP $24
2017 Zarephath, Porongurup WA RRP $35
2019 Jim Barry Florita Clare Valley RRP $45
2018 Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge, Frankland River $45
2016 LoosenBarry Walhalla, Mosel GER RRP $55
2017 Rieslingfreak No1 Grounds of Grandeur, RRP $100
2016 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, Mosel, 2016

Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin...) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

Love Riesling Freak. I actually love the number 8 for a summer picnic. So luscious.

Erin are there any AUS rieslings out there in a dry, medium / full bodied Alsace style?

There's a few producers working with older oak which gives the wines a fatness and density that their tank fermented counterparts don't exhibit. They are, of course, still quintessentially Australian iterations, but they are very very good. Try the Wolta Wolta (collab between Loosen and Jim Barry), the Rieslingfreak No 1 (Grounds of Grandeur) and the Forest Hill Block 1 (no oak, but the fruit profile is muscly and full, another cool wine to have a look at). You know what... I recently also tried the Stargazer riesling (TAS). Was really impressed by the concentration and detail. Lotsof flavour. Hope this gives you something to start on!

We know we missed a few... for a number of reasons (availability within the timeframe mainly)... who's on your list that we haven't mentioned?
