    These breakdown videos are the best, especially with advanced orchestration like this. Far more interesting than default big band!

    Superbe arrangement. Et en plus vous avez d'excellentes capacités pédagogiques (j'ai utilisé votre vidéo pour expliquer en quoi consistait le travail d'arrangeur à un musicien débutant).

    The way your Alto Sax works at letter B is really just solid gold.

      Yes I could do. Did you see the first one where I only talk briefly at the beginning? That might suffice for you for now.

    Alex,
    I really enjoyed your explanations. Thank you for all your efforts and for taking all this time to offer your content via your blog and YT.
    The piece and your arrangement has a certain gravity, is well-grounded by the bass and tuba, but without being "heavy" in a negative sense. It is always moving forward through your creative use of harmony, musical lines and selected motifs.
    I have one question. I noticed in bars 32-33 that some of the voices, in particular the two flutes, repeatedly play the same notes. Well, the melody has these note repetitions as well. Thus, it is a characteristic for this piece. So my question to you: Did you take this aspect of note repetition within a voice into consideration when arranging? Are you usually trying to avoid them?
    Best regards and looking forward to your next Gil Evans arrangement!
    Peter

      Hello Peter, thanks for your detailed question! Yes you'll notice for those bars I tended to repeat the harmony as the melody note repeats. I did move a couple of the inner voices for a little bit of interest. Generally with repeated notes in jazz, the harmony will stay the same. But it can be nice to add some movement, especially if it enhances the next chord. I did this in my Sax Soli video. I hope that explanation helps. I'm looking forward to the next arrangement as well, it won't be for a while as they take so much time, $ and effort. :D

      @@gilevansinsideout Thank you Alex, for your answer. I watched your Sax soli video and spotted the places where you did move the notes and also commented on it. It sounds so logical and effortless when you explain everything. But I guess, it is hard work even for you.
      I don't know if this is something you would like to do, but I'm curious to know more about the way you work: What are you using besides the piano, paper & pencil, what software for your scores, how do you record your scores and how do you produce your videos? Are you using a DAW and VSTs at all? Looks like you have access to some friends playing the real instruments. The sound in your videos is really great! Others might also be interested in this. Best regards. Peter

      Hello Peter, a few people have asked about my process now. Do you think its worth making a short video about it?

    • @Jordu7
      @Jordu7 Год назад +2

      @@gilevansinsideout Absolutely! There are so many tools around now. And yet, every step in the process can take a lot of time and effort. I think many people visiting your blog might appreciate to learn how you make your high content, high quality musical analyses, arrangements and videos. I myself dabble a bit with the DAW Reaper and use VSTi's to get better sound out of MIDI files. But I'm just an amateur who does this for fun for myself.

      They are a lot more common than for example bass clarinet and tuba
