They need to get a restore process going ASAP. J bought one of these drives to back up my parents dying computer and I want to get the files back onto the new laptop I bought for them
I'm liking this for phone backup throughout the month... Then doing a 3-2-1 backup once a month to the main computer/hard drives/backblaze etc.
The concept has merit so long as the device is NEVER EVER EVER carried with the laptop in the same bag. I’ve known a number of users who kept the backup medium with the laptop and the bag was stolen - one guy lost his to a thief climbing up the outside of their apartment building (about 6 floors!).
Field backup is remarkably important and cloud reliance can be sketchy or dangerous in some circumstances. The lack of encryption is problematic though, won’t pass audit for many firms. Multi-generational version storage is nice though, that’ll be great for people out of the box. He's right about photo protection too, that could be very good for people out and about or on holiday, etc.
I’m looking at an approach using a Pi Zero 2-W doing this but using WIFI instead - also using it also as a download mule and gateway, files can be stored on its internal SD card and encrypted, etc. Sync can be a personal WIFI zone, the Pi itself would be pocketed and have a power bank to run it. I believe there are people in China doing this already (to run VPNs from something other than their identifiable phone), that may another useful purpose too.
Simplicity is exactly what an noob like myself needs! Thanks Synology!
This is great for my parents since the first thing they do when I give them a backup solution is forget the password.
😆 I wrote a very similar comment. My father might need one.
Honestly this looks pretty cool! Not really something I need, but I can see the appeal use case.
Looks like something i could use when I travel to ensure I have the files I want with me. I'll wait until they add some more features to the UI.
So the file backup is basically like Sync thing. 5 copies, can customize chances, syncs folders.
The file sync BeeDrive folders could be useful for modems that have a USB port on them for direct access to files on an attached USB drive. A possible cheap way to share files with friends, family, etc without spending more money on one of their dedicated NAS drives. Use it with ICE Cast software to set it up as an entry level music streaming drive. If you were to side step their software do you think it could be used like a DropBox-syle SSD ?
I could be wrong but this doesn't look like a product for your "regular audience" to buy for themselves. This looks more like something we would buy for grandma, grandpa, mom, or dad. The lack of encryption is REALLY annoying.
This could come full circle if it can be plugged into a Synology NAS to dump its contents there automatically after just plugging it in.
This would have been great before cloud storage. I use iCloud to back up my iPhone (except photos) and Google Drive/Photos to work with photos and other personal files and OneDrive for work files. All of them work perfectly and give you much more flexibility and security than this device which could be lost or stolen. It doesn't look like this device would be easier to use than cloud storage for tech novices. I guess this would be good for those who don't have Internet access.
In regards to previous versions. Does it only go by date and time or does it check for md5
optional encryption might be useful for some but my personal preference is to have all my backups in easily accessible form... 🤔
Bitlocker ?? uh... That was my first thought, and the documentation says that it can be used to encrypt the drive.
But that won’t work on Linux or mac for people working across platforms. Also not something the average consumer will do. Competing drives have a much friendlier and platform agnostic means of encryption.
Interesting concept but seems incomplete. Outside of the synchronization, a lot of the other features are built into windows, e.g., the file history function in windows backup, it also supports encryption, and works with any USB mass storage.
Wanted to also add that for phone backups, apps like foldersync pro offer those features and more. I currently have it backup a number of folders from my android phone, to my NAS, where it will sync data on demand when on battery, and automatically when charging. For remote backups, I have to VPN into the home network to do those backups.
I just want to back up a desktop computer in my own house never being moved so encryption is not necessary.
My current solution is just a regular usb drive with everything copied over to it all the time. If you delete something you must manually do it from the backup as well as the pc. it also has files not on my pc like old pictures i don't look at very often.
i bet the software could work with any drive but no one is willing to pay for pc software anymore so they have to sell it with a drive.
I don't see anything new in this. Looks like a square shaped pendrive that comes with its own software for sync.
You still have to connect the drive with PC/laptop for it to work.
I think SanDisk pendrives have been doing this from ages.
How is this different from the regular pendrives?
Lon... Is there a MacBook Pro version of the software for the BeeDrive? as I was thinking about getting one for my son for his birthday since he has a MacBook? Also can the BeeDrive be used to transfer data to a Synology NAS via the USB ports on the NAS?
Not yet but the Mac client is going to be a available soon. You can connect it to a synology to transfer data but there is no beedrive software client for their nas products.
@@LonSeidman Thanks for the info, after checking with my son and he said it wasn't something he really needed. But I may get one for myself as I have more Windows and Android devices to backup.
Looks and performs a lot like the Crucial X6 Portable SSD
I just use my Synology NAS and have access to my files anywhere and no risk of having it fall out of my pocket and risk data loss. Really should have encryption as an option.
I think you can solve the encryption by yourself. Just use an encryption tool that will work on both Windows/Mobile OS, encrypt the entire drive, and every time you plug it in, you will need to decrypt it, and only after start the program on Windows or the Mobile OS.
Does such a tool exist? Because i can't find one compatible with windows and android.
Looks like Crucial hardware.
It feels very similar !
Is this a white labelled product? It looks like nothing else Synology makes.
It’s totally new for them!
Just like time machine
everything here could be done using syncthing
Probably not going to work in Linux...
Yeah at the moment the only client is on windows but a mac version is coming.
