What Makes a GOOD Psytrance Kick Drum - Sampling / Synthesis & Fine-Tuning
I really have to point out that your KiBa tutorials are way better than many paid lectures I have seen. Often skilled people lack of the ability to properly teach their knowledge or people can teach well but lack skills. you combine both - being skilled and able to teach very well.
to get away without having to sample bass you can also disable keytracking from the synth and then automate the same parameters to find sweet spots with the kick. some manual work but less than sampling at least. and something to prevent bleeding of course
i mean it is easier to maintain curves than samples
I didn't know about the keynote button. Sweet!
Thank you, Dash! I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into your tutorials. The way you share your knowledge is always laidback and sophisticated. Love and respect!
Gr8 topic. I liked the video b4 even viewing it just by the title. Keep up the god work, oh great teacher:P
Its come a long way the perfect sound for the kick drum
Man, your channel is awesome ❤️
I like how you've made video on every topic related to making Psy music
Dash excellent content as always, free pearls of wisdom
Love your vids .ive got no sound on my computer .mouse ect .can u get serum on tablet form or u phone?
I'm impressed by the meticulous preparation. (: Cheers!
i waited this tutorial for a long time, thank you!
cheers mate, really appreciate you covering Kick 2 , awesome content as usual :)
This lesson is pure Gold ❤️
Very nice tutorial as always! Thanks for sharing
This is amazing!
Btw, Dash, Can you make a video explaining how to create a Mad Maxx style FM Stab?
great video! loved what youre doing with the zenon section.
Great walktrough!
I don’t produce psytrance or even listen to it but I love your channel. Thanks bro
Yea Psytrance is a very deep sound. Takes a long time to get good at producing it.
Dude thank you so much for all this knowledge and sharing it in a practical way that is easy to follow and does not make me fall asleep or lose focus! You have no idea how grateful I am :D
great video again!
always a lot of value in your videos.
all the best
Thanks for taking the time to teach us Dash. There's a nice T-shirt design at 26:40. *Glitch Kicks*
At 26:10 the kick that you've made, maybe I'm misreading the spectrogram in your eq, but isn't the kick super subby, when your preamble to the video was all about removing the lower content of kicks to leave room for the bassline?
Am I just being confused by visuals here, is that spectrogram that shows a very low and prominent sub actually representing the bass and not the kick?
Thanks for the response if you can manage to respond to a 3 year old video, and if not, thanks generally for your channel and sharing knowledge in the way that you do. A+ mate, I'm compelled to state, against my better judgement.
the kick is legato and spends more time being heard and thus picks up longer on spectrums, the 2 don't co-exist that much it's more of a tonal choice which the spectrum is not great at showing I guess
Learned a couple bitchin techniques with Kick 2... big help there. But by far the best cross reference you shared was the envelopes related to each genre. Brilliant stuff.
Holy shit, buddy! Thank you so much! 👏🙏💚
That was incredibly insightful!
This tutorial, your Bassline tutorial and a pair of incoming Ollo S4X headphones is hopefully what will save my newest track!
I've clearly been trying to do things that are a few steps beyond my abilities, with inadequate Sub-200Hz precision at that!
Keep up the great work! Your videos are excellent and your sounds are right on point! 👏👏👏👏👏😺
I really much love the Kick2. The fine tuning on it macke the teamwork between Bass and Kick so much better.
Just found out that you can snap the LFOTool nodes if you hold the 'alt' key.
Thanks!
Wow! Nice tutorial. Could you make a tutorial explaining the Zenon Bass of this video?? Please. It’s sounding awesome and I have no idea how to create those lines. Thanks 🤙🏻🤙🏻
thanks a lot, used all of it, very usefull
C’est tellement intéressant 👍
thanks nice tool saludos desde chile
Hi Dash, have you tried FX23 psylab synth? for me it's a dream come true for kick drums and as a general synthesizer.
Brilliant idea using LFOtool as a surgical kick shaper. That's some advanced level sound design.
Great video
What infected mushroom sample pack is that kick from? The Singomakers one?
I get my kicks from watching your videos :D
Another awesome tutorial on a really interesting and elemental topic. Great job! Have you ever thought about creating a Discord channel where your followers can share tips and tricks and give feedback. There are already some really great communities out there, and I'm sure this could work here too ;). Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany :)
The start point of the pitch envelope has a massive impact on the result. If you want a soft zenon kick set it to a low value 2349hz for a D or 4698hz for a full on kick. If the annoying freqs are not there from the beginning, you dont need to fiddle around with the amp envelope so much. Also have a look at what compressor attack does to the transients...
Why fiddle with a compressor when you can adjust the transient in the envelope :P
make one about basslines too. this is very very helpfull

Hi Dash this is pretty cool thanks. I have a video idea if it appeals - I have been trying to make better psy kicks on the modular, just for fun - I know it's probably better done in Kick2 or whatever for Psy, but I produce for my own pleasure so getting something decent out of the hardware without too much post processing is fun just for its own sake. Learning a bit more about your thought process when you're making kicks on the modular without the same level of fine control as a VST gives you would be interesting.
Awesome content as usual, thanks! Do you ever synthesize your own hi hats? I’d love to see a tutorial for creating psytrance hi hats in Serum!
Its easy
I’ve done some videos on it, white noise and then envelopes 👍
Dash Glitch I’ll search for them, thanks. Didn’t see anything immediately when I tried searching before. I’ve tried with noise and filters/envelopes, just can’t seem to get what I’m looking for...
im gona be honest with you 2 weeks ago i biugh a daw and a bunch of samples /loops etc and i always loved psy trance like early infected mushroom sun project (my favourite)gms ,astrix etc and ive got lots of questions hahah but the main one is can u load sample into serum and change the samples to your taste ? and how to load a sound to serum when u open a midi track on serum and put the notes where u want i found quite a bit dificuld or should i say confusing let me know if u can and thanks
Go dash!
Baptiste Sarrailh here former *patreon legend* just saying i love and laughed when i first heard you say "let me open an instance of serum" just say it all the time please i cant recall the video you said it in but i'd love to sample it and put in my track with a sound modulator
Thanks Dash! a back voc lead, what is it?
When you drag down the 400 hz.. then no matter how loud the music.. we can still talk !
Pls tell me what this is and how u opend that envelope thing at 6min33sec.
I use Cubase 6.5 Artist it maybe don‘t have it? It sounded so useful I need that. Also will get me the LFO tools this month sounds very helpful thank you.
I think what you're asking is just part of the Cubase Sampler
Why do you cut all transients? They are important for high-end
only the ones that overlap with the kick
awesome
good stuff!
what did you think is the bst analog drum maschine for producing psytrance?
I've only just been getting into trance, and I see that for my mind there are far too many niches and do's and don'ts, it's become a minefield.
Don't think of them as rules, rather guidelines. They're also there to be broken, that's what makes things unique, but it helps to know a solid starting point. Don't be discouraged!
Hey guys, if any one is using Logic as their DAW, is there any way I can preview waveforms of an audio file in real time, like Dash is doing here?
Dash, in ableton i have this envelop ADSR drawing for the kicks to manipulate then?
Yes I think in the sampler
It’s basically Habstrakt with long hair.
Darkpsy needs different kick tech. Hitech tooo
Like?
Uuuuuum where's the psycore kick example Dash? Are you discriminating against me?
😂
Hahaha
i remember watching the kick drum come out of the speaker in 1988, acid house, psychic t.v.
i spent decades on audio dsp development to proliferate the means of expression. developed a fantastic aural discrimination, developing spectral processes and discerning spectral regions. you can see my name in the industry.
my ears don't work so well nowadays, and i have, absolutely zero interest in monitoring recordings. developed methods of synthesis others don't touch, nothing better than birds.
i figure there are probably other things to do in this life that can also develop critical discernment and attention abilities, without leaving you with decades of unproductive and wasted time. good luck with your channel, i don't think people are going to be able to tolerate fucking recordings as a "lifestyle" for too much longer.
What do you tell the average joe you do in your spare time? Saying 'I make music' does not do justice to all the stuff you get involved with. just curious haha. Don't know how I would explain this shit if my uncle asked me
Hah good question 😂 I usually say “sound design” as making music implies I’m finishing tracks regularly
