I met Jan in Sacramento before IM CA got cancelled when he was doing a test ride the day before. It's nerve racking going up to someone so large in the sport; he is the Tom Brady or Michael Jordan of the sport. He probably didn't want to talk with "another fan" and the concern was he would blow me off when I went to say hi. But he was incredibly nice and allowed me to get a photo with him. That says alot about a person. I don't know him, but I'll never forget that moment and I am so thankful for it. Watching this makes me appreciate him even more. He sure seems like a solid human being. Thank you!
Ultimately, the other way around; Triathlon is such a small sport globally that all the stars, including Der Jan, are very kind. It is enjoyable for them, outside of triathlon, nobody knows. I had the honour of wishing Jan all the best before a few races; always a gentleman.
"you can't cheat your way through it. you get a lot of return for what you put in. but you have to put it in. and that is something that keeps you very honest"
Wow - I have never heard a triathlete talking exactly what I feel about triathlon and why I do it. 3 years ago he inspired me to start this journey. THE GOAT!
I hope he continues racing at the top level for years to come. Everyone loves watching him race and put the pressure on in the back half of the bike leg. He's been unchallenged for years, and now there are potential challengers coming through, I'd love to see the battle.
Jan carries the crown so well in every aspect, triathlon has been lucky having such a talented, gracious and intelligent champion with the best physique in the business!
When I started in 2013 Jan was an up and coming guy in the 70.3 scene. He caught my attention and looked up his past achievements to my surprise he’s an olympic gold medalist from there on I know he was bound to be great in Triathlon. As what he said his greatest achievement to this day is being in the top level for so long, wish for a few years more to see him in the spotlight.
And THAT is perspective. A true PRO in a sport where very few have the physical ability to achieve the highest level AND articulate effectively the nuances of endurance and the sources of inspiration.
I hope PTO creates a Masters category so we can keep following around - have the PROs be able to retire to Masters or something - so people like TO, Jan, and others who are probably only a few years away from retirement have an option to "age" with the sport, the way AGers do. They would obviously be continuing to compete at a pretty high level, and would be so fun to continue to follow them/be inspired.
Its obvious this man is in love with the sport of triathlon..The dedication commitment, high standard, respect and high expectation for the sport is also obvious. Yan walks the walk and talks the talk. Nice that Yan is aware that it takes a village 🙂 I wish Yan well and continued success.
What a great vid. Inspiring to hear and most of all keeping balance and appreciating the wider importance of life in general despite being an absolute monster in his sport
No doubt, everyone who wants to be the next worldchampion, has to beat this guy. Even if team Norway is coming, his motivation is still higher as high. So, Ladies and gentlemen, take your seats, lean back and make yourself ready to watch some other great battles!
There are not many people in sport that have that special ora around themselves, it requires more than performance, it requires intelligence and humbleness , and he has plenty of both.
Sport is making a bizarre turn in my life ,never thought I’d be running marathons under 4 hrs when 60 yrs ,,well 5 yrs to go ,I love my training, very consistent,,,use watt bike tri athlete trains me ,,this is a very relevant video
Jans Greatest achievement is still Olympic Gold when he got that win he had never won an ITU race, there were other faster guys in the run particularly like Gomes and he took it down. Jan demolished them with a very long sprint. He never beat those guys again at that distance. The ITU stuff was just becoming too fast. He revolutuonised the ironman by bringing that speed Tim Don was also a bit there but maybe too light for thr bike watts needed. If he takes down Iden and Blumenfeld at full iron Jan is just from another planet
He is in Triathlon the same legend like Muhammad Ali and Michael Schumacher in Boxing and Formula 1 , hope I can see my Idol in Mai in Girona in his Café on my Route to holidays to Barcelona and Valencia
Whatever it takes! Jan has nothing to prove any more. And even if 2022 is probably the year of change (Kristian, Gustav, Sam, Lionel, .…), then he will remain the GOAT! 👍🏼
Yes Kristian is coming. But beating a 40 year Old Frodeno will not make him the GOAT. It takes a lot more. And he has not beaten him yet. But maybe he will be the GOAT sometime in the future.
@@TheNjackets It will definitely be interesting to see it all pan out. I think Alistair will be out this year to embarrass a few people as so many have forgotten how dominate he is. Long course is clearly where it's at now with Alistair, Gustav, Jan, Javier, Kristian, etc. Hopefully so many great races to watch.
Thinking about that incident involving the truck I am thinking about a quote being made by Jan Frodeno himself earlier during this video: "pressure is a privilege." In my opinion the same goes for being trolled and insulted in many today´s cases. Many people are dissatisfied with themself and the life they are living. But instead of changing themself, their approach to life, their behavior and therefore their life, they blame and hate others for living a better life, the life that they want to have. Of course that is a destructive and self-damaging way of thinking, but that´s the reason why these guys are so hateful and are unable to grow. The reason why they prefer targeting well known, successful and life enjoying people like Frodeno is because these people are the characters that these guys want to become, but fail to do so.... "being trolled is a privilege".
He's not in the same league as Mark Allen, ridiculous calling him the GOAT. Also at Short course he was about a minute slower than the Brownlees and Gomez.
@@TheNjackets We should not forget about the 10 Nice wins in a row, and many many more everywhere. I can understand that there may be people too young to know about Mark, but we oldtimers must do everything we can to let them know.
Jan must be top 3 of all time, but GOAT? Mark Allen has something to say about that. Jan got screwed out of two Kona opportunities, but let’s see him win at least one more before settling this.
How? How could you workout the greatest in all of time if all that time has not come to an end?!! Some time ago there was a guy who won the world champs at Olympic distance, and won 6 ironman titles and during those iron wins dropped back to standard distance throughout the year and handed the current world champ, whoever he was, his 'you know what'. Right up to his retirement. Faster times depend on course and weather conditions. Seems conceited to me. A joke.
I love how the younger generations want to talk about the greatest of all time and to be very honest as impressive as this documentary is and this athlete...until he wins 6 Hawaii Ironman Championships in a row, Mark Allen, the grip still the greatest. Back in those days, there was no technology like there is now, heart rate monitors were very few if any. I remember the triathlete from Finland, Paoli Kiuri, I believe who was one of the first ones to wear a polar heart rate monitor. Now all that stuff is so advanced. Yes, these guys are faster, but they have better equipment, better technology, better nutrition and better money. So, when you get this idiots making a documentary about this guy or this guy been the greatest of all time....please, until he wins 6 Hawaii Ironman World Championships, no way, and any of you young wiper snappers can talk all you want but Allen won with bicycles that were not aerodynamic like they are now and a few pounds heavier. When he goes out and wins 5 like Dave Scott did he is just a guy who has won and has benefited from his predecessors and he is great but the greatest...please stop making sensationalist and overhype claims for a guy who has not accomplished the required numbers...PERIOD.
The appropriate response to this is surely, “sure, boomer”. Yeah, technology is better, but not THAT much better. You could also note that the drafting zones are a lot more spread out back in Hawaii compared to the 80s and 90s. And as for aerodynamics- do you not recall the custom Huffy Allen was riding, nor even consider that body position is a bigger part than bike or wheels? The triathlon field is deeper than it ever was, and Frodeno’s performances across all distances and all types of courses are at least equivalent to those of Allen’s. Triathlon is not now just Hawaii.
No disrespect from me but I can´t believe people really consider Jan to be the GOAT, he is a great guy and a great triathlete but he is no better than Mark or Dave. People has to remember what this two great men did for the sport. There is no bigger winner that Mark, no one has won more big races than The Grip himself, not just Konas but Nice, and everywhere else. He didn´t win the Olimpics simply because triathlon wasn´t yet an olimpic sport.
Jan Frodeno, is without a doubt, an absolutely phenomenal athlete, but G.O.A.T....? Most certainly not! The saying, in the land of the blind, the one eyed is king applies here. Jan's 'G.O.A.T. status will soon come crumbling down like Jack & Jill rolling down the hill, when the WTCS stars enter the fray. PTO most certainly has the numbers and the cash, but competition in the WTCS circuit is on a significantly higher level.

Same experience in Miami challenge. Took photos with at least 15 people when he came out from doing his recovery swim day after the race
