I find it funny that there was a whole era of internet animation of literally random characters fighting each other. From this series, to stick man animations, to madness combat, and more. We all really craved brutal cartoon fights.
I remember watching a lot an animation of Mario vs Link, it was also sprite based, but I don't remember the name sadly

I remember that cliffhanger from episode 2 where Sonic and Shadow come in. And the narrator wonders if they are friend or foe. And I legit wasn't sure. Because before SMBZ, most animations with Mario and Sonic were of them killing each other.
My dad used to put this on for me when i was really young before bed, this is such a massive nostalgia trip man

I remember watching SMBZ every single day on my home computer after coming home from school, and I’m pretty glad it’s getting rebooted. After watching this video, I kinda want to watch some SMBZ again.

nothing in this world hits harder than hearing Mecha Sonic say "I'VE LET YOU LIVE LONG ENOUGH" before blitzing the the hell outta sonic I swear this series means the world to me and the reboot just makes all the fight scenes 10000 times cooler like seriously episode 2 of the reboot contains on of my fav beatdowns in history
Episode 2 of the reboot shows how brutal Mecha Sonic did to Yoshi. The whole fight is on DBZ level with the animation. I cannot wait for the third episode once it's done. The fight with the Koopa Bros will be interesting.

But he stated before that the third episode is going to be entirely focused on sonic's flashback. The battle with the koopa bros won't happen until the next episode.
@@HamtaroSonicHedgehog ohhh I guess that actually kind of makes sense. Really looking forward to the battle on Yoshi Island though, that's one of my favorites in the series. I can wait, though, that probably means we're going to get new fights! Probably better for expositional purposes as well since we have no idea how Eggman even survived the Death Egg being destroyed.
I blame this series for my taste in videogames. Ever since I saw it as a kid I wanted a game that let me do the kind of sick combos shown throughout the series, and now I almost exclusively play fighting games, beat em ups, and hack 'n slashers.

I still remember watching this when I was younger but I didnt understood English that well back then and I remember the series "ended" when Mario, Sonic and the others were on Bower's flying ship if I remember correctly

Yeah me too, the page I used to see it didn't have more episodes after the one where they fight against a gray Koopa, I remember he used a poison mushroom on Mario near the end, after that, I never saw what happened next

What’s so insane is that the new version with just 2 episodes is even more godlike with the animation, music, and choreography. Would love to see reactions to those as well next stream. Alvinearthworm/Mark is just built different and honestly best wishes to him

I love that guy, but he needs to stop scrapping the series and restarting it. we've had like 4-5 versions of episode 1 at this point.

Wow, Mecha Sonic has been getting some recognition lately. First he makes a grand return in the recent Sonic comics, and we got my boi Kwite watching SMBZ
He even said the phrase

Back then SMBZ was so fire that many action base fanfiction stories will include Basilisx in almost everything, even up to a point when you might get sick and tried of seeing this character.
Honestly takes me back way back when I was in Jr. High. I found the series sometime in 2007, somewhat briefly before episode 6 came out. Watched episode 5 first then worked my way through the other episodes after that. Then episode 6 happened. And... not gonna lie, holds up shockingly well with how tense the whole scenario is!
Really happy the reboot is continuing! Although, the fight between Mecha and Yoshi is a lot more brutal in that, and I love it.
When I tell you some of the most awesome scenes is when everyone is collectively fighting against the enemy, and vise versa with the enemy and heroes. The fighting chirography was like more top tier than some anime out there. Also that Fire Sonic scene was the peak of my childhood, man.
I will never not be bent out of shape over the series ending *RIGHT AS* Mark was finally able to write great dialogue and character traits for Sonic.
His character writing is superb for everyone except him, and it took the very end for Sonic to finally start feeling like the character he's supposed to be. His argument with Shadow is frustratingly well written and the fact that we'll never get payoff for it really upsets me.
Imagine the reboot keeps going, and then the series continues after episode 8, finally giving us the continuation of that cliffanger

Sadly based on what he has said earlier he will be reworking the plot. Basilisk from the seventh episode is going to be moved to another arc after mecha Sonic.

Goombella was from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the Nintendo GameCube and was one of the partners in the game and Rougeport was the first town where the game starts and where you get Gooombella

This was my childhood, I remember that I couldn't watch it as good as now, because my computer was really slow and everytime there was a fight scene or some charged attack, my computer would lag horribly, sometimes even crashing internet explorer, but there were good times, I started liking Sonic (but specially Shadow, as every kid likes the edgy characters) thanks to this animation
Man nostalgia trip I loved this series as a kid and I will forever love it beyond because the story is amazing the animation is good and Mecha sonic finally had a spotlight for once

Episode 2 is some of the hypest sprite fights ive ever seen.
I’m not sure if it’s just me but series like these makes me want a story driven game where Eggman and Bowser team up and Sonic, Mario, maybe Luigi cross paths and work together. Or maybe even Bowser working with Ganondorf
Imagine how cool it would be if we got a story driven game or RUclips animation where Bowser, Eggman, Ganondorf and Sephiroth are teaming up, they’re the 4 most iconic video game villains of all time, with Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Sonic, Shadow, Link, Sheik, Sora and Cloud all teaming up.

I was always a bit confused as to why people compared the fights to dbz, as I found the fight choreography in this series leagues about most of the fights in dbz.

OH SHOOT! NOSTALGIA! Mario and Sonic sprite animations were the early 2010s equivalent to Stick Fight animations. SMBZ was honestly ahead of its time though, most Mario sprite animations at the time were comedy stuff (Castle Calamities, Small sonic sprite animations), not many sprite animations had an in-depth story at the time, so SMBZ got really popular cuz of that.
Dude what I love is Mecha is DONE after Yoshi Island. He ain't playin' kid games and the stakes are for keeps afterwards. No preamble and no banter, just get payback and settle the score so he doesn't have anyone to threaten him. Wish you showed everyone the half episode Alvin (Mark) teased but still can't wait for him to possibly finish this. He was done so dirty by Nintendo so if anyone wants to I heavily recommend supporting him. I personally think he earned it with how much he inspired everyone and created such a marvel all by himself.
SMBZ will always be the goat and hopefully SMB DX will able to keep going past the original

There was an episode 9 made, but it was very short. It showed Shadow in the desert and possibly fight Mecha Sonic alone, and Luigi managed to unstone himself thanks to his costume. And then it just said “the end”
That was scene 1 of episode 9 and the only scene to of said episode to be made. After he gave up on the original run of the series. Given the title of that episode it likely would have officially revealed eggman, how he survived, and how he got to Mario's world to ally with bowser.
Rewatched it a few months back. Such a huge trip honestly. So sad it stopped when it did. Most definitely one of the best things to come out of the early days of internet animation. Legendary honestly

sounds like it was in the same vein as a flash game called Final Fantasy Sonic X, i remember one of them had an anime intro with the first Fullmetal Alchemist intro, Melissa, and it was my jam.
edit: after watching the vid a bit more i definitely remember the Axem Rangers, it's really cool that the creator decided to include characters from all kinds of games. Axem dudes are from (or at least included in?) Super Mario RPG, and the Koopa Bros are one of the first bosses in Paper Mario 64.
