I would recommend newspaper too!
Hi Sandy I use newspaper under my pellets. My local newsagent let's me have all the leftover newspapers that I want. It helps with absorbing the smell too and is fully bio degradable....keep making the videos...we love them 😁🐰🐇
Thanks Carole! It's weird, ever since I moved out, I haven't really seen a newsagency anywhere near here. I'll keep at eye out though and maybe they'll let me have some of their old papers!
@@BunsBestLife I use newspaper too... then pine pellets and hay, just like yours. I have a big compost box out the back especially for the litter boxes, which breaks down really well and we use it in the gardens. The paper sometimes doesnt break down as much as the hay, pee n poop and pellets, so I just make sure it goes on the bottom and i wet it down.
I set up my litter box the same minus the puppy pad because my buns will dig to the bottom to get to it and chew it. I also found it to be an added expense I didn’t feel was necessary. I don’t use anything at the bottom except for pine pellets and come cleaning day, I dump the box, I swish around some water to get out any leftover wet clumpy pine powder and dump that in with the rest of the soiled litter, then wipe down the box with my cleaning solution. :)
If I lived in a house, I'd love to just dump the litter waste into the garden or something. Do you find the pee burns into your litter box? That was the reason I started using the pads but I'd much prefer to not use them if I can find an easier way to clean the urine stains
I do this too! I use force of nature spray and just give it a quick wipe after. Bonus of using the pine pellets is my cat uses the same thing for his litter box.
I'm so happy you are looking into alternatives to plastic lined puppy pads. I simply put a brown paper grocery bag as the liner of my litterbox. It lifts out easily & just spray the residue with vinegar & water & use an old cloth diaper to wipe it out.
I'm trying to think of washable liners but the hay really gets stuck to fabric like fleece. I have fleece pads I made for our guinea pigs.
I compost all the rabbit waste since I'm a gardener & the brown paper bag soaked in urine is awesome along with the aspen shavings I use & their poop.
Love the video! For the puppy pads you can use a couple of layers of newspaper to be more eco-friendly! :)
I've always used newspaper. Works great and it's free !!! I don't use pellets either, just newspaper and hay. 😊
You can also use reusable puppy pads that are fabric and washable as another option
newspaper sounds like a great idea! Does the ink transfer to the litter tray? I guess its not a big deal if it does since its just a box for them to poop in haha
@@BunsBestLife I've had nothing like that to deal with. Of course the newspaper probably isn't as pleasant to deal with as absorbent pads, but it's all I've ever used and I'm use to it. And I also use vinegar and water to clean up with. Works great !!!! 😁
@@BunsBestLife I have never had a problem with ink transfer but I do have a dark colored litter box!
thanks for your videos
I use brown paper bags under my litter, and the brown packing paper from Chewy deliveries. We get a lot of these from shopping
I also use pine pellets too, they are the best litter for rabbits 🐇 🤗 & the cheapest. It’s a win win ! lol 😂 I JUST use pine litter and hay in my rabbit 🐇 litter box, I don’t use puppy pads or newspaper 📰 to line it I just clean 🧽 it with white distilled vinegar it helps with any residue left 😊 it completely gets rid of any stains 🤗 Also I love 💗 your videos! (I compost the dirty soiled litter, to be more eco-friendly)
Where do you get the pine pellets from??
@@sarasoliman5553 our local grocery store but I bet feed stores have them 🙃🙂
I use newspaper in my liter box :)
I just use recycled paper pellets in my bunnies litterbox. I don't put an under pad at all. I have a neutered male, and a soon to be spayed female and I have had no issues with smell or mess. When I clean it, I just pick up the box, place it partially into the trash bag and empty it all in there and then wipe out or rinse in the shower. I put a few inches of the litter pellets for them and sprinkle some hay, plus I have a hanging hay rack in there. They don't dig or anything
Hello! I love your videos and your rabbits!
I also skip any liner on the bottom. Only litter (paper litter) with hay on top.
Also, to be more eco friendly, I've started composting the contents of the dirty litter box.
Do you find your bunnies urine burns through the plastic? That's the trouble ive been having with mine. I'd also be happy to compost if I had a hard but I live in an apartment so no option to compost unfortunately 😔
@@BunsBestLife I don’t find the urine burns but I used a heavy duty tote and cut a U shape in one side. Maybe it’s the type of plastic?
i use paper groshrie bags as my liner :) they are free to!
I used to use newspaper that I got from my neighbours or chopped up toilet paper cardboard rolls I would ask my family and my neighbour to keep for me. However, I started skipping the step all together by just adding more wood pellets since I get them cheap at a type of pound store here in the UK (wood, non-clumping cat litter) but I thought using more, would produce more plastic waste. I also found crust patches on the inside of the litter tray caused by their calcium deposit. After making sure that was a normal amount of deposit from my vet (first time paranoid, overprotective rabbit mama) I started using reusable paper towels or washable kitchen cloths that aren't white. This is a great way to see your rabbits calcium deposit and keep an eye out for sludgy urine or any blood in their urine (don't freak out if you feed them something red)
I use hay like you and their paws are always clean and just put the cloth into lots of water before putting it in the washing machine and use the water for my houseplants. You can also easily and quickly wash them by hand as well or just soak them in the sink with some vinegar then rinse them and you're good to go.
also there is the re usable puppy pads, maybe u can buy like 5 of them and just rotate them while they are being washed etc.
Just got my two bunnies neutered. One of them so far has improved a hundred times with his litter box usage but the other one is still pooping and peeing all over his enclosure. He's driving me nuts. Lol.
I hope one day mine are as well trained as yours.
Mine have definitely had their naughty moments. About a month after they were bonded, Bunmi randomly started pooping on ever soft surface we had. Our carpet, rugs, sofa. One night, I was assembling our bed in the carpeted bedroom and I was constantly picking up her. Probably 50 poops that night 😅
They're a bit more expensive, but they do have cloth pee pads that are washable. Assuming your rabbits won't destroy them, then it probably saves a lot of money in the long run.

Heyy lovelies! Comment down below and let me know what your rabbits litter set up is like! I'm always looking for ways to improve my own set up to make it easier to clean, cheaper and more eco friendly 🌱
We put our plastic grated litter box in a plastic tote and put hay in the tote part on all sides and a second, plastic grated one in a cubby with a food and water bowl and have the hay next to the litter pan in low bin. It contains the mess well
You can look into getting reusable puppy pads. I would wash them separately from all other laundry but then there is no plastic involved and it will greatly reduce the amount of waste you are going through.
Before I used to do similar tray set up to urs, with the pad and litter. But I find that it’s a waste.
Now I use newspaper or magazine and I also use the leftover hay from previous day on top... however i change my bunnies litter box everyday.
Hi again.your rabbits are so much like mine in appearance especially the whit and black one he has exactly the same black on his nose an my other is tortureshell
@@margaretsaunders9608 oo tortoiseshell, must be so cute!
yeah I would prefer not to use the pads, extra cost and extra plastic. I've got some old magazines I could try
Hey girl! I LOVE your videos and your set up. When you said three days, i about died! I clean mine twice a day! Lol! It’s the only way to keep mine from going anywhere else. If I did once a day, she begins pooping and peeing outside the litter box. What I’ve also done is use a blue light, to see if she’s peed anywhere else around the area, and sure enough she would. So she stopped doing that once I started changing it out in between much more frequently. I stopped using the pellets and just did the hay on the pee pads. Now all is well. So no more hay pellets and pee pads I cut in half vs fold, so I’m using less.
Great tips you shared there, I need to find myself one of those lights! lol
Hello my friend 🥰
I think the hay colour is also something to do with being in Australia. It's really hard to come by timothy hay here which tends to be greener, while oaten hay is more easy to buy and tends to be more yellow.
Exactly right! :)
Hope you can get them a bigger litter box so they have more space :)
yeah maybe one day, for now, this size is working fine
you can buy reusable litter pads online which work great! after each use I just put them in the washing machine
Have you tried reusable fabric pee pads that you can wash? I know there’s a lot of them on Etsy and it’s also probably pretty easy to make your own!
I'd never heard of these but I'll look them up. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@BunsBestLife oh yes, my best friend has guinea pigs and they said they are the gold standard for a reusable pee pad! you might have better luck looking if you include guinea pigs in your search terms
I have fleece pee pads I have made but the hay gets really messy on them. They are great for guinea pigs because they might pee out of their litter box like when hiding but I always made their litterbox under a "car wash" fleece to hide under
can you make a video on how to train your rabbit to be picked up and handled and how long it would take etc please???
I have tried newspaper but it gets stuck to the bottom of the tray. I’ve tried cardboard too, same result. I refuse to spend $ for litter pellets. I use just hay, like you, and change every 2-3 days by just rinsing the tray with the hose outside. The residual scent encourages toileting and the waste is composted. I also sprinkle mixed dried herbs with oregano, more to please my nose. I also do not live in a city so perhaps easier for me?
I wish I could still buy a bale of hay :( but one of my rabbits is a picky hay eater and only eats a good amount if I mix a bunch of hays together. Here in the UK I use a company called dust free hay if anyone is interested. I can still get variety in bulk and they are great in terms of quality.
Could you use news paper instead of the puppy pads?
How in the world do you have one box for two rabbits? I have two boxes for one rabbit! Maybe he's just extra like that. But by the end of just one day the pad is HEAVY with urine in the one, I can sometimes go two days with the other. He drinks water like it's flavored with strawberries or something.
I’ve noticed it’s pretty popular on RUclips to use vinegar to clean out bunny litter pans. I take mine outside once a week to spray it out and wash it with Dawn dishwashing soap 🧼 is my way safe for bunnies? Thank you💗
as long as it's all rinsed off, it should be fine 😁
@@BunsBestLife thank you 💗
Hello!
I recently got two rabbits and had a questions regarding litter training.
I put the hay in my rabbit’s litter box but was also wondering, is the meal also supposed to go in there? (I have the hooded litter box). I have noticed my rabbits tend to poop and pee while drinking water and having their meal also, so is this supposed to go inside their litter box along with the hay?
Where is the container from where you store the litter pine pellets? I’ve been looking for something like that to make storage in our space easy to access but also take up less space. Thanks in advance!
Its the Ikea Hallbar 35L bin ❤
It takes me like 10 to 30 min cuz my rabbits litter area is very small and narrow for a human
hi i would rekemend having a roof over your litter it makes it eco and safe for ur bunnies. Also watch my fav bunny person (rather than you) LENNONE THE BUNNY.HAVE A ECO DAY!!
I enjoyed your video.my rabbits have the sieve type tray.extruded wooden pellets under then oaten hay put high around the sides so that the droppings drop under the hay when I bring the hay from the edges I kinda lift it and the poos drop down to the sieve base.change the trays about twice a week
Rabbits are not smart
They make a lot of "dirt" and it stinks
Idk why people keep them at home
