For GW2 to get 8k within its first _week_ is honestly really good, especially considering how little effort ANet put into actually advertising this. Imagine how high it'd be if they paid for advertisement on the front page of Steam.

I'm one of the Steam newbies. I've been a many years solo player, and what few MMO's I had played all left a bitter taste in my mouth either with the paywalls, the dungeon gear grind, or what have you. GW2 is honestly the first MMO that made me want to do group content and team up with other players. It's a different atmosphere compared to other games I've played. Just finished the main story and loving it so far. IMO the biggest difference between before and after Steam is that Steam has a lot of eyeballs. I wouldn't have known about it except someone in ESO (which I was already growing weary of) commented in chat that it was free on Steam about a week ago. I said at that price, it's worth giving a try. So yeah. I think I'll keep playing it for a very long time.

Hello!! As a Veteran Player I wanted to point out some of us are not just going back to lower level areas to help or take away from the lower leveled players. Because we get new quests and achievements added to the game later and alot of those require us veterans to go back to the lower level content stuff. In one of my achievements I had to go back to Queensdale to do a open world event for an item drop. So Veterans are sometimes required to go back to the level 1-30 areas.
I can say though the community is very open and friendly and a Veteran is encouraged to assist folks at the lower levels even our achievement system rewards us for communicating or assisting in fights/rezzing players. Which can be overwhelming for MMO players who are not accustomed to that way of playing.

  • @Daiska_Plays

The twitch drops were the biggest part of Steam launch, but I also feel like it could easily have been simply part of the ten year celebration, with nothing to do with Steam. It feels to me more like "lets do the launch now while everything else is happening." Steam itself feels lackluster, with no sales to entice people to buy, no steam achievements or cards, and no advertising (that I could find, and if you need to try hard to find an ad, it's not really an ad).
It feels like they just slapped it on there. Not having even a small sale seems like a mistake. Yes they lose revenue even without a sale on, but 5000 people paying $20-$75 is better than 1000 paying $30-$100. People like sales. It's a little bit of a letdown when they were saying "you can only launch on steam once, and we want to do it right" I think the blame may lay with NCSoft more then ANet, I don't know how that all works.
At least the Steam forums have chilled out now. The flood of trolls the first few days was insane.
Also of note, roughly 50% of negative reviews are one-liners from people angry they couldn't link their old acct. Another 10-20% saying they can't play it for various reasons. (why review a game you've never played?) That saddens me, otherwise it might be in the overwhelmingly positive category.

I can also safely add that there are hundreds of these players, specifically, the Linux community that plays the game, because running on Steam has been way more smoothly for a plethora of reasons that aren't worth covering in this comment. However, there's for sure players that are on Windows and are playing in Steam due to that flag being available, we just can't tell how many.

In most other mmorpgs my choice would have probably been easy I go tank or a bruiser class. Most of the times I play beefy meele classes that can sustain themselves give others buffs in the process and just stand in the enemies and smash their heads. I know thats not exactly what this game is and you have to dodge to stay alive and cant face tank everything but I really want to have a feel for a elite spec/class that can do that. Be it in dungeons raids, open world pve or pvp/wvw. Are there any professions/Elite specs close to this fantasy ?

Welcome, I have a couple of recommendations for that kind of playstyle!
Warrior (Berserker spec) - easy playstyle, literally smashing heads, become the angry. Hits hard, can heal on hits, you can run a shield for some blocks. Great for providing buffs through Banners - you plant these down and they'll pulse buffs to allies near them.
Guardian (Firebrand spec) - the king of sustain, you have so many healing options (staff, a tome or 'book' you open that changes your skills to all heals) as well as many utility skills you can slot in for more buffs/heals.
Engineer (Scrapper spec) - medium armour class, not heavy, but the definition of 'bruiser'. You wield a Hammer, give yourself Barrier on your attacks for sustain, have some blocks, plenty of handy buffs and unique utility like a ranged revive.

  • @Asmodeius
    @Asmodeius 2 года назад

oh and biggest thing that i love about GW2 is classes. GW2 classes have clear identity and unique feel to them. each feels like a separate whole unit, not a blend of things. And if we compare them to ESO and WoW. ESO classes are not unique. they are a template for you build, that is all, each of these classes has like 1-2 very unique abilities and that's it, the rest is just same abilities with different names that put out the same dps. only thing that matters is how you going to build it, and at the end, all builds are pretty much the same and classes within those builds play absolutely the same. If we take WoW classes. They lost their identity long ago, now each class is just a mix and match of of abilities, which made classes blend too much. they barely, just barely have their class identity. mean while i agree that major buffs like bloodlust and instant res should be part of more than one class, simply to make more viable comps for raids. but blending beyond that is bad. Basically WoW in old days had a more "rock, paper, scissors" balance and classes felt unique. today WoW is just an RPG version of call of duty, where every one runs pretty much the same build and class you choose to play has no advantages based on it's architecture alone, over any other class. so essentially they became more of a template like ESO classes. Problem with such structure, where every one plays the same build and every class has same gameplay style, is because it's similar to arena shooters (like quake champions). average players have no chance of playing most of it, because they are in constant disadvantage of the pros. who in turn have more time to play, to practice, get their timings and reaction in place. meanwhile average dudes jsut want to play for fun, no compete for the e-pin.

I think a major problem with the steam release was launching with a DLC package that was clearly not discounted in any substantial way. It should have been discounted to $69.99 or $74.99. I can almost guarantee that would have provided not only more sales, but more players. Nothing more disconcerting than jumping into an MMO with a $140 wall of content when something like FFXIV or WoW only require the most recent expansion (subscriptions aside).

To add, I just recently got back into GW2 and am loving every second. I just didn't agree with the bundle approach at all. To any new players reading this, just buy Path of Fire (which also nets you the Heart of Thorns expansion for free) if you're enjoying the game enough in your first 20 or so levels. Paying more is a question for you to answer AFTER you've gotten well into your level 80 experience.

I just started playing it and I absolutely regret not giving it a try earlier. My favorite aspect of mmos is questing and leveling. This game does questing the best out of any mmo I’ve ever played. And there are just so many little quality of life things that add up to such a smooth experience. Oh and I’ve always avoided doing crafting in mmos, but the way they did crafting in this game makes it so simple to understand, I actually found it fun, which was a first for me.

I started playing Gw2 at release (even have the preorder ring) I got to level cap and then got sorta lost interest since it's not standard mmo fare and everything felt aimless. Came back for HoT and never completed it, got stuck in Auric Basin.... I bet all that sounds bizarre but it's sorta how my time with the game went. It had a lot of things I loved and a lot of things that felt like the devs were going against the grain just to be different like no traditional questing or quest-chain like micro stories, everything was LIVE all the time, the collection system to find/do tasks and get certain rewards was weird, I remember one to collect spoons? But that was early Gw2. Even though I don't play it I sing the praises of the game for what it DID do right and what I learned it got amazingly right (mounts, duh) after I'd quit.
Gw2 was what made me love personal accountability in mmos. Dodging, self-heals, limited hotbars but solid build options to find your niche within your class and show your skill expression. PvP was perfect. (WvW less so, TBH I've always seen it as an AoE nightmare with small skirmishes never being important so it just felt like zerg V. zerg and elementalists destroyed everything.)
Clicked the vid because honestly I don't really understand what it means for it to be on Steam? Just means u don't have to use ANet launcher or website? Idk to be totally honest I'm amazed Gw2 is even still alive with the current state of the mmo genre, it's a miracle and I'm glad for it since they take the risk of trying new things others can learn from. (Again, mounts. Even WoW's starting to steal the idea.)
I will say this though to veteran players: Every time I come back to the game to give it a try, vets ruin old-content public events by zerging or spamming blast might and buffs and it couldn't be more evident that the community that's held onto the game has been running on this treadmill so long that y'all got it down to a science and now new players or old but lost players are roped along into a pace of combat that is unnatural. Hard to tell if you're even contributing when everything's exploding.
Slow down and smell the flowers. Show off cool spots and jumping puzzles and such but don't decimate the mobs kiddos are tryna enjoy fighting with your meta builds or blind them with your giant neon mounts at spawn.
Bad first impressions stick with people.
