- There have been some big improvements happening at the Central Shaft of the Hoosac Tunnel. Both of the old horns have been replaced with quieter fans and what looks like a smoke reduction system. There's also a large wooden sound barrier wall in place now.
With the large equipment still on site, it looks like more improvements may be on the way!

Was up there not long ago myself. I'm so curious as to what the interior of that building looks like and how it's constructed. From your video you can make out the circular section when would be the elliptical shaft itself is. A terrifying thought as to how that plummets down over a thousand feet. 😱
I'm curious to know about the interior of that building. There doesn't seem to be any information, pics, or videos of the inside. I'd love to see the actual fans in operation!
That would be pretty cool to see!
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been wanting to see the central shaft for 6 years now, but can’t manage the time to get there.
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment!
There have been community complaints about the noise. So it looks like they are doing some interesting updates to quiet the system. 🇺🇸
It's not surprising there have been complaints! I remember it used to be quite noisy. Glad the RR is doing updates to help!
@@Imrfilms great jobs on the vids… the whole Hoosac tunnel is just amazing! We love it too!
@@reconjeeper0321 Thank you!
Awesome video my man!
Thank you!
The diverting wall is interesting, I wonder if that helps the property that’s right next to it.
Yeah, I'd guess so.
The Stroud was deteriorating from age and had to be replaced so they Incorporated a new baffle like a muffler into the exhaust which is why it's so long
Thanks for the info!
They put a baffle on the exhaust
what's the purpose of this,thanks
This is to help pump out fumes/smoke from the tunnel. Originally is was a giant hole in the ground to let smoke out, then there was a steam powered fan, and finally three phase power and a dual fan system!
