  • This is a note for note transcription of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Bad Moon Rising.
I transcribed Bad Moon Rising Note for Note, then replayed all the instruments and sang the song so you can see how it's played.
There was an interesting challenge with this song, and that was the guitar part.
On the original Fogerty is playing a Les Paul tuned down to D, meaning all the strings are tuned down a whole step. This allows him to play open E chords, even though the song is in D.
So, I tuned my les paul down a whole step and learned it exactly the way he plays it. The problem was that the guitar continued to go out of tune because it wasn't used to the tuning. Fogerty keeps his one Les Paul set up in D tuning all the time. The intonation was even off a little as well. Now, I could have setup the guitar to be played in that tuning, but I thought, If I'm having this much trouble with this, imagine how hard it's going to be for the people trying to learn it?
So, I had an idea. Could I take all the notes that he plays in Open D tuning, and find them on the neck in standard tuning, and would that be possible to play?
So, I did just that. Found the notes in standard tuning, and it winds up that, yes it is possible. The only thing that is missing is the low D string (E tuned down to D), and he only plays the low E in a couple of James Burton type open E string licks. You can play this in standard by simply tuning down the low E to D. In the tab, I just left out the low D.
So, if this looks different than the way John Fogerty plays it, that's because it's in standard tuning.
    Same notes, different tuning.
I thought this might be easier for the nightly working guitar player that doesn't want to have to retune all night.
A little info about the song and how it was recorded:
Bad Moon Rising was written by John Fogerty, and first released on Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1969 album: Green River.
The Equipment used in this recording is as follows:
    Slate ML1 Microphone
    The software is Cubase Artist.
The audio interface is an Axe IO
The Bass sound was created with a Sire V7, straight into the Axe.
The Guitars are a Telecaster, and a Blueridge Acoustic straight into the Axe. Amplitube 5 was used for amp emulation.
All vocals were recorded with the Slate ML1
Ozone 9 was used for mastering.
The video, and the recording, were produced by Abraham Myers.

Thanks Jimmy. You're too kind brother. Studying these songs has been so much fun, and so educational. With every song I learn more about producing. So glad I can share some of the tabs with my fellow musicians. There really is no education better than breaking down the classics.
The magic is in there, you just gotta find it.
Thanks so much for watching and being so supportive. It's awesome to call you a friend.

@@ThePickingPythagorean I have to quote that "There really is no education better than breaking down the classics." Abso-freakin'-lutely brother!!!! You said it right there...it's almost like you gain insight into what drove them to come up with a part or write a tune for that matter. It's great to see you keep breaking new ground and it's awesome to call you a friend as well...keep those killer jams coming Abraham!

Thanks Andrea. Yeah, I love that Les Paul. My cousin put the handwound custom shop pickups in it, and man, ever since then, it's sounded like a five thousand dollar Paul.
Thanks for watching man, and I loved your cover of The Look. Very cool version.

Yeah, this is a cool one. That one little lick he plays during the verses is so classic. And it's really moveable on the neck as well, so you can play it in different keys.
Thanks for watching Ace. I appreciate all the support.
