The Patriots weren't quite as close to leaving as was indicated. They wanted to move, and there was interest in it, but a previous owner had sold Foxboro Stadium to Kraft, and Kraft had a clause inserted in the contract stating that if the team ever abandoned the stadium for any reason, they would owe Kraft for the price he paid for it, plus any upkeep or improvements, plus some other costs, and no matter how much people begged and pleaded, Kraft refused to budge. He was not going to be stuck with a useless stadium, and he put that clause in the contract to protect himself. So, in the end he was able to purchase the team for a rockbottom price.
