Middle earth: Shadow of war is a great example of Conquering because you literally take over regions. Fantastic open-world game with tons to do and with the expansion pack it's even better
Yes! I was quite surprised to not see it on this list actually. The process of building up an attacking force to conduct a siege, or implementing spies within enemy ranks to sabotage defences is so satisfying. Not to mention the fantastic nemesis system.
The saboteur was one of my favourite games on PS3, it had a certain charm about it and the black and white filter when in an occupied area is still such a unique idea. A rough diamond but certainly a hidden gem.
The saboteur is a real hidden gem. It is AC:Syndicate which happens in WWII Paris with ACTUAL progress in the regions you explore/conquer. That slow transition from B/W to colored, the transition in the background music was something that I'd like to see more in the modern games. If there would be a remastered or 2nd version of the game, I will definitely preorder it.
Me too. I loved the loop of buying some ammo and bombs, going out and taking out some Nazis and a few watchtowers and spotlights then back to the merchant. Perfection. Games like Ghost recon Wildlands are the only thing close to the same sort of endless loop nowadays.
That game was just so charming in its own right. I still play it every now and again and a good bit of its gameplay holds up today. But the sheer amount of stupidity that can occur gets…hilarious. Like “accidentally” hitting the spawn cap at alarm level 5 and having destroyed half tracks phase in and out of reality.

State of decay 2 is one of my favourite games, I wish you showed footage from today instead of release because its almost had as many changes and updates as no man’s sky has had. Better graphics gameplay, maps, difficulties, mechanics. It’s now nearly one of the best walking dead community style games I’ve played.
Conquering and taking over is always fun, especially if you're roleplaying as a Hero, building homes and setting up defenses are always my go-to, it's a nice way to tell the folks welcome, your safe!
I just wanted to say thank you for putting state of decay 2 on this list. It does not get anywhere near the recognition it deserves. Plus, you have to love how the developers have supported and expanded the game, what with the bounties, 2 new maps, reworking plague hearts, etc.
I hope we get some news for state of decay 3 soon. Maybe just I missed it but I feel like we haven’t heard anything since that cinematic trailer they had like 2 years ago. Actually now that I think about it we haven’t heard much of anything about most of the big Xbox exclusives they have coming. Haven’t heard anything on fable or hellblade 2 either
It's crazy how a lot of older games have more environmental destruction, deeper gameplay mechanics and are just way more dynamic in general compared to games now, when the technology we have today is way more advanced. Developers used to make all kinds of crazy games. Now it's just about what investors think is best for gaming.
Yeah it's all about money lol. That stuff costs money, and people are willing to buy games that don't innovate or do anything new or expensive so why do it
This is a great list and would include, at least as an "Honorable Mention" Vampyre. The way you move around the map and influence the districts (and how your decisions can DRAMATICALLY impact the fate of those districts) feels like it meets that conquering criteria as you laid it out :)
@@realgamergirl4638 It's not about conquering regions per se but the way you influence the areas. The Vampyr has a really good mechanic where you get to choose who do you drink as a vampire. But every NPC character in the game could be vital to their district. If you drink too many people or the most important in the district, the district might turn into chaos (more enemies will show up etc.)

I loved taking over the red zones in GTA: San Andreas by defeating the enemy gangs controlling that area, it was so much fun!! I used to play the hell outta that game, good times!
I know you’ve also done a list based on destruction, but I’d like to see a similar list based on how the playing area changes drastically over time. You can pull from multiple genres, such as Satisfactory, Battlefield 4, or Shadow of War. I’m not just talking about environments, but the feel of the area such as how NPCs react to you.
Mafia 3 was pretty cool in depending on the way you divided up the city to other gangs ur underbosses could turn against you leading to you having to kill them as part of the main story, it also affected which ending you got in the end
I love Viking: battle for Asgard. It was such a fun game, though I wish it could’ve had a new game plus or a sequel that expanded on the game mechanics. Or that there was a consistent source of gold, since it’s finite and consumables, upgrades, and skills require gold to purchase them. I know there was a previous game in the series that was based on Greece or Rome. I liked how the amount of troops you released increased the amount of Allies you had in sieges, and there are probably hundreds of enemies on screen, but as your troops die, enemy shamans will spawn them as Hel’s legion
My first playthrough of dying light 2 was so satisfying, I had no idea how much the city would change as I made areas safe and gave territory to the survivors.
It's good to see Red Faction 2 in here. So many great memories, and it still holds up pretty well. In terms of conquering, then the sequel is more relevant but my heart goes out to the first which was such a game-changer in general.
Throw back to PS2 era, Dark Cloud, being able to clear dungeons and earn buildings that you could place that would affect the character interactions and quests. 100+ level dungeons and collectibles, unique gameplay and character weapons. was just a solid experience.
My issue with state of decay 2 is they did very little post launch to add to the base building. Sure there's Trumbull valley and the red talon stuff but their main focus seemed to be tweaking the zombies and adding difficulty modes. Im hoping in 3 they'll have gotten it down pat
I think the major difference to the usual X4 games is the player as an in-universe person. Not some immortal controlling force. The conquest is also more plot than mechanic, imho. In many other games like Just Cause and many Far Cry you liberate the areas more than conquer. They change hands, but you have little to no control.
Red Faction Guerrila and Overlord is literally one of the best I ever played, I just wish they had more games being made cuz these series are so fun and unique to play, they were part of my childhood and ive lost count of how many times i replayed them.
It would be nice, if in the next prototype game ( if they'll ever be a new prototype game) that you can choose to infect the city and takeover parts of it, while recruiting other infected super powered people, to take down government controlled parts of the city. Or heal up the city from the infection, having people look up to you as a hero, even helping you in a specific places in the story, even putting up posters.
I liked the conquering feature in Mafia 3. It’s certainly not perfect however there’s just not many options for Mafia type games where you are the big boss and you take over the city. There’s one of the godfather games but it’s pretty old by now and I don’t think it’s available on ps4.
You know you would think we would get more mob/mafia related games than we actually do. Mafia stuff has always been hella popular in terms of movies and tv shows so you’d think we’d see more games revolves around it
Vikings battle for asgard game meke me realise how little does people talk about Creative Assembly's non rts games, the spartan total warrior game is amazing and very ahead of its time, it makes you feel in a real battlefield with an incredible amount of npcs, espetially for a ps2/xbox era. Some mechanics were later used for the vikings game later on.
Does AC3 & Far Cry 3 count? I had a blast conquering forts and areas in those games. Actually I think it’s the first time ever experienced something like that in a video game. I always prefer the stealthy approach when I take over different areas(Even though I’m not always good at it lol 😂)

So the Infamous games
The "let's game it out" screenshot is perfection.
Man I remember saboteur. Such a great hidden gem.
legit playing Satisfactory right now. So happy to hear Gameranx mention this masterpiece. : )
Does AC3 & Far Cry 3 count? I had a blast conquering forts and areas in those games. Actually I think it’s the first time ever experienced something like that in a video game. I always prefer the stealthy approach when I take over different areas(Even though I’m not always good at it lol 😂)
Yeah they even said that for #10.
AC3 is my all time favorite game
Viking Battle for Asgard was a gem of a game that is totally underrated.

Viking battle for Asgard was one of my favourite games when I was younger and remember it very well.
You brought up The Saboteur? That's a like right there. Wish it was more widely available.
Shout out to Josh at Let's Game it Out for the conveyor vortex featured in the Satisfactory segment. Such a great streamer and such a great game.
Love how the best example for Satisfactory is from Let's Game It Out, love Josh
For those wondering, the factory with the giant diamond in satisfactory belonged to Let's Game It Out. He's a really cool content creator and he did a video on making that base.
Red Faction Guerilla had some of the most satisfying gameplay loops I've ever played.
1:20 LOL! was this Josh from Let's Game it Out? This looks like the work of that lunatic XD. I love his videos.
For a moment I wondered when "Mumbai to Bangalore" came out, then the title "Mount&Blade II: Bannerlord" showed.
My favourite part of the Overlord series is that the world is basically already ruled by monsters and evil tyrants and based on your actions, you can either become a better or a worse ruler than the ones you killed.
I love how every satisfactory review in this world has atleast one photo of josh's mayhem. The man singlehandedly conquered the whole satisfactory world while not even playing properly 🤣🤣🤣.
I love that at 1:23 you show Let's Game It Out's base as an example of crazy. He does crazy very well.
I remember being proud of capturing areas in just cause 4 lol
Viking battle for asgard was my favorite game ever on Xbox. Big battles, big maps, massively underrated game
Planetside 2 is also an open world game that let you conquer bases. It’s multiplayer and you get to choose which faction you want to be in
Dude finally Viking: Battle of Asgard gets some recognition haha. Played this back in 2008 and I always thought it was really unique for its time.
Mad Max and Need for Speed Carbon, those are the 2 games I remember that you can conquer areas
When he was talking about satisfactory he used a clip from Let's Game It Out. Pretty cool
I picked up M&B II a week ago and have been addicted ever since
9:23 i loveddd!!!!! Vice city stories as a kid. Taking over areas in san andreas was so satisfying. Combined with a portable gaming system that is also GTA. This was LIFE!
I love that Viking game! ✌🏼😁🎮
I completely forgot about Viking Battle for Asgard. It was a lot of fun
The fact that Josh's lag monster satisfactory build appeared for a brief few seconds made my day
The Saboteur is one of my favorite games!
Lol i love that people still use Josh's conveyor belt tornado to show what satisfactory can do despite being an absolute menace.
Overlord 2 also has short or longterm gain conquest, where short-term is killing all the inhabitants for immediate gains and long-term is mindbreaking them to produce equipment for your minions, gold & souls for you.
And you don't have to destroy the houses to find all of them, you can just destroy the door and they'll run out.
Saints Row 3 and 4 had some pretty amusing city takeover features and game play, the insurance fraud missions were especially entertaining!
Bruh, Viking Battle For Asgard and the its predecessor, Spartan: Total War, were a pair of games that were so fucking SICK at the time. First games I’d seen on console that had the scale of ai they had. It was truly a special game, I wish they had keep making them. I could only imagine how massive the fights would be now
So glad to see viking mentioned! I had it for my 360 and loved it!
I loved seeing Lets Game It Outs conveyernado popping up for Satisfactory
