    Turning down 1 mil for the chance to win 5 mil means you think you have greater than a 1/5 chance of winning. Team captains are stupid for that imo. You cant be scared of eliminating other people to get paid, bc even if you want to compete to the end that would mean youd eventually have to eliminate everyone else anyway the only difference is doing it now and getting a confirmed large payout or waiting til later and having a much higher chance of getting eliminated yourself

    • @corvidreactor7356
      @corvidreactor7356 8 дней назад +3

      It makes some sense if you consider that they'd want to have won the money "Fairly" by being better than their competitors at whatever games they had planned. The difference between winning a competition by being the best vs winning by cheating and poisoning all the other competitors, for example.
      Of course, that goes out the window when all the "games" turn out to be the same negotiation/accept bribe stuff, instead of actual physical-skill based activities, but hindsight is 20/20.
      The real injustice is that the most empathetic people who would use that money on things like paying for a relative's medical bills or donating to charity, etc. Are also the ones least likely to take the bribe, whereas the people with the most selfish reasons to take the bribe are much more likely to take it since they're less likely to care about it being unfair to the other competitors.

    MrBeast once asked what's the retention rate for movies to an executive and executive replied to him usually 100%. Because when most people sit down in a theater, they stay. That's how out of touch he is and why he employed so many RUclips tactics even in a TV show to keep retention instead of building more of a connection to keep people invested for longer.
    Also it's not fun to hear a cacophony of people in despair. That's like bringing hell to life and watching for fun, which my non psychopathic self does not get. Nor is it fun to watch people just sacrifice themselves for more selfish pricks, instead of having people use any type of real strategy. It gets boring fast. And idgaf about anybody left.

      The entire structure of that round was designed to discourage taking the money. Maybe on accident, too, seeing as Donaldson seemed like he might be genuinely bewildered that no one took the bribe. Which is an incredibly funny possibility.
      A quick rundown:
      - Mutual observation between captain and team provides heavy social pressure not to betray the group
      - Mutual observation with other captains provides social pressure to conform to that group (if one broke and took the deal, they all probably would have)
      - High-intensity delivery and a short decision-making window encourages the strongest emotion to dictate choices, which in this case is going to be the pressure _not_ to take the bribe (especially since the money was not tangibly represented to the captains as it is elsewhere in the show, while their team was Literally Right There)
      - Ramping up of bribes (I _assume_ it didn't just jump straight from $1000 to $1mil for the contestants, though I didn't watch the show myself so idk how it's presented) increases the cohesion of the captain group and entrenches the captains in their decision not to take the money, especially as their teams react positively to each refusal
      - The fact you remain in the game after taking the bribe heavily disincentivizes taking it. This sounds backwards, since forfeiting the chance of 5mil sounds like a bad thing, until you imagine spending being trapped for possibly _weeks_ in an uncomfortable shared space with dozens to hundreds of other people who _all_ think you suck and should lose the game you're all participating in. If the captains took their bag and got to go home, they would have escaped all immediate social consequences for betraying their teams, and it would have been an easier decision.
      Also Donaldson was definitely encouraging them to take it/talking up the money and given he was play-acting a villain, that's additional motivation not to do it.

And yet if you remove the cash prize, keep the cast small and just make it silly and you have Taskmaster, which is just about to start its 19th season and has been on the air for a decade. So I'm not sure the idea of stakes is really actually serving the format here.

      With game shows there's two main forms of appeal:
      The personalities of the contestants/hosts, and the games themselves.
      The games in Beast Games are boring, Jimmy frankly lacks much of a personality, and there's so many contestants we don't have the opportunity to get to know them and therefore their personality isn't really a draw either.

    Agree 100%. I half-watch the show, and while they try to have the viewer feel bad for contestants, I think everyone on the show is likely just the worst. The selection process probably had a questionnaire including “Would you push your mom in front of a moving train to win $5M?”. And with that, I don’t care when people are eliminated. The self sacrifices make no sense. Maybe in a context where they show people have been there for weeks making friendships, but even that wouldn’t change my opinion. Self sacrifice is group bullying someone to fall on the grenade for no reason. They go home and their actual friends ask why did you self sacrifice - and they’re going to have no logical reason. They went there to earn money then after a week of being put through mind games, refusing to take a bribe, they just decide to go home with nothing.
    Ok, let’s get to the $1M bribe. This was actually interesting, bc the chances of winning $5M are very slim, but with the press of a button the contestant could win $1M? Plus, half those people were getting eliminated next round anyways! But they held strong. I think that challenge was missing one thing. It needed an elimination aspect between the leaders. Maybe have it that if no one chose the bribe, all 4 leaders would be eliminated. Now they had to to choose between betraying their group they don’t know, or eliminating themself from the game and going home with nothing. Someone would have pressed the button. Add in one more elimination factor: whichever leader presses the button, gets the money, and stays in the game BUT the other 3 leaders get eliminated! Now there’s competition to see who would sell out for the least amount of money. That would have been much more interesting.
    Overall, the beast games are pretty stupid. More fun to watch with a friend and trash talk everyone on the game. The private island? Would anyone actually take that as the prize, instead of the cash value? No. Taxes alone would be about $800k on winning, so you’d need to pay near $1M to claim your private island prize - and then you’d need deep pockets to actually use the island for anything. So, no one in these games. I’d love it if there was no cash alternative prize, and the winner was just stuck with an island they couldn’t sell.

    the final event of Episode 5 (leading into episode 6) is exceptionally dumb because they made one mistake. Because both players were allowed to swap a suitcase, it screws over the person who goes first so that they *can't* win.
    First person who swaps, if they guess wrong the other person can swap the suitcase they just got for the other person's suitcase and win. If they guess right the other person can swap their empty suitcase and get a deed back. The way you are *supposed* to do something like this is only one person gets to swap per attempt and you alternate the swapper. Just a massive oversight, and the person who won the island was basically handed victory because of this obvious flaw.

    • @stephen3164
      @stephen3164 8 дней назад

      Each person got to choose which case they wanted from the other person, then they swapped at the same time. It was supposed to involve questioning the other person and lying or telling the truth, but it didn’t play out that way. The way they did it, if each person chose the right case, they’d have swapped deeds, and have to play another round. The order they chose didn’t matter bc they didn’t switch the cases until both people chose.

    • @uppsie
      @uppsie 7 дней назад

      @@stephen3164 From the end of episode 5 it looked like he made his choice on what to swap and then she chose before they revealed, rather than same time. In that case she'd have a huge advantage because she'd know what he picked and whether or not he selected her deed which means all she'd have to do is call to swap for his other case which would very likely be his deed, because why would he give her his deed.

    Watching Rotten Tomatoes' series on the real-life version of the torture inflicted on homeless South Koreans - the thing Squid Game was actually based on - makes it horrific to see Jimmy went with BLUE track suits. Why not bring back the salt baths and 30-foot high walls, too?

    from what i've seen of clips and my sister watching it, it seems more like each challenge is just "get rid of as many people as quickly as possible" instead of any actual challenge of skill. but also, the fact that the original is basically a horror story of capitalism and what people will do when capitalism is declining, and not one but TWO major corporations did "hey this looks like a fun way of entertainment what if we did the same thing" and are making themselves the people in charge of dehumanization for entertainment of the rich.

    I only ever watched one Mr. Beast video, but he always seemed so ungenuine to me. Some people worshipped him because he supposedly did the stuff other people claim rich people should do (as in, using his money to help other people), but he made a show of even that.
