When I saw the title of the video I got really excited, but nothing prepared me for this. I mean, he just owned the song in his own style. Such an inspiration
Rocco was crazy good with all that ghosting and false fingering; I couldn't keep up with him. You know he's smiling from above at Marcus' rendering of this Tower of Power masterpiece. RIP Rocco.
Love the bassist. She's better than I could ever hope to be. She's obviously a Marcus Miller fan. She's playing kind of a cross between Miller and the original Tower of Power bassist Rocco Prestia.
@jasont0815 Really good work on those drums. Funky as hell. Like... really amazing freaking work. It can't be easy to keep that funk tight on such a fast tempo and with those kicks. You've earned yourself one cookie.
"What is Hip?": Tower of Power sax players Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka wrote this song. In our interview with Castillo, he said: "I would give most of the credit for that concept lyrically to Doc. He said he wanted write a song about being hip and I said, 'About being hip?' He said, 'Well, what I mean is being hip is so short lived. You can be hip by wearing your hair a certain way today and then in three months that style's gone and you're as unhip as you could possibly be. I want to write a song about that.' It's saying what's hip today might become passé." The group's drummer, David Garibaldi, helped out with the rhythms.
@jasont0815 Hi again, I love that musicians in these videos are commenting themselves. I´m checking again and the BPM I´m getting is around 126 in the beginning, being that Miller plays three tuplets as an upbeat in the riff. Of course it takes some time in this clip to settle the tempo, but the groove coming out of the rushy start is very good.
I was having a great play along to tough Marcus tunes which I felt I could play them fairly well. Then I tried to slap this. oh dear lord im just gonna listen!
JT- Never heard anyone but you & Garibaldi sound this good on this tune. Didn't even notice that shaky 1/2 measure but sure enjoyed the other couple hundred. There may be a few decent musicians with the spare time to post comments on RUclips, but nobody in your league, I suspect.
@nativeofsandiego Slow as in BPM (we speed up yes, but rushing? Rushing means pushing foward more than your supposed too). Those four musicians (drummer could purposively speed up, because from that point they're all on time) really feel it when the drummer comes in. The groove is tight. Then listen to Marcus again. Bass + Drum lock in = groove. The song is on time.
@@physiciansassist1 cmon, stop with this kind of fanboyism. Okay youre fan of Rocco, and youre so insecure that someone might do a cover who is better than the original? Cmon, grow up dude
@@physiciansassist1 are you a musician on any instrument, or are you just a commentator with a preference for Rocco (RIP)? I play bass and drums, quite well many say. I can tell you this, there is absolutely nothing sloppy about anything musically on this track! The tempo is a bit faster than the original, but that's Marcus's arrangement preference for this track, his none cloning spin. Believe me each of those guys were hitting hard. They did an outstanding job and tribute to the original players and arrangement of this, IMHO, iconic song. If each remake of any original song was spot on, note for note, what would be the purpose of doing it? It would just be a clone. The average musician would welcome a none cloned piece! It gives a new birth to their musical baby, a new generation, if you will. I personally love Tower of Power, Garibaldi, Rocco and all their music. I pay homage too them every time I play one of their songs, either on my drums or my bass. Sloppy, no it wasn't my man. True musical homage is what it was by outstanding musicians. Peace too All !!!
@nativeofsandiego Miller starts the song by playing a riff at 124 bpm, when the song finally settles the tempo is around 132 bpm. Please listen to more jazz or music in general, it´s normal that the tempo finally settles when the drums start to play.
A nice effort, but, I'm a Tower purist. Now I have to listen to Rocco....then Marcus' Blast...hat's off to Alex on that tune, showing me how to love Dom b9, 1/2 step up with Lydian scale. So Marcus, if God forbid, Alex 'can't make it', I'm ready bro....
I'm much more into warm bass sounds like Jaco or Alphonso Johnson who were also able to cut through the ensemble but , yes it's true, this performance kicks ass!
Everyone brought their "A" game to this session. This is badass on steroids'!!!!
Marcus is one of the world's greatest bazz players ever!
Alex Han SMOKED that solo!!!!! Marcus was in such a groove during that solo. That head movement said it all
Is it an Alto or Soprano sax?
Wow...Marcus is playing this at a much faster tempo...and with such ease...he's simply amazing!!!!!!!!!!
The whole band is in the pocket, outstanding version and Marcus excelling.
The bass groove is killing me!
When I saw the title of the video I got really excited, but nothing prepared me for this. I mean, he just owned the song in his own style. Such an inspiration
The drummer is really funky and precise.
You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket :D
The whole band was.
Prelijepo Marcus i band srdačan pozdrav bog
On your march, Let’s Go!!!!
Rocco was crazy good with all that ghosting and false fingering; I couldn't keep up with him. You know he's smiling from above at Marcus' rendering of this Tower of Power masterpiece. RIP Rocco.
Marcus redefined every aspect of the bass-line for this song! I love you my brother. You're phenomenal! Thanks for posting this!
I just keep coming back to this song each and every time. Alex Han is amazing. He's a vessel of never-ending ideas.
This is what music is all about. Masterpiece!

La puissance de la fonk Gina!
Great music. There's just one thing I don't like and that is that I can't play it....
Smokin'!!!
As if Rocco's bass line wasn't hard enough.
imo this is a sloppy version of Rocco
Come on man, it's a cover. Why would he just copy and paste Rocco. He is playing with his own twist.

@nativeofsandiego The groove is just fast, and tight. The drummer isn't not rushing.

@nativeofsandiego Marcus started off slow, then drummer sped them up, but the whole band is pretty tight.
Was that a sax solo🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎷
