Hi Leonardo, i'm looking forward to seeing your reaction to this, also, pls pls pls listen to "what if I stumble", "between you and me" and "in the light" and "Colored people"off the same album. Its the more mellow acoustic folk style ballards off the album and it will absolulety blow you away. I ABSOLUTELY PROMISE YOU. The vocal harmony, the way its crafted, the nuances within the songs and the lyrics themselves.
Thank you Jeff, Ive grown up listening to DC TALK up unto this day. JESUS FREAK, SUPERNATURAL, The instrumentals, the live albums, even have Dontae my son, listening and singing along either in the car or at home in the evenings BLASTING IT IN SURROUND SOUND with the wife sometimes.
There’s not a terrible song on this album, in my humble opinion lol. Definitely feel like they were ahead of their time, as far as Christian artists go.
Yeah, I guess you're right. Nirvana's presence was very disruptive. CCM edgier music went underground with punk, metal. The only album in the CCM world that matched was _Jars Of Clay_ followed by _Third Day_ and maybe _Don't Censor Me_ a distant third.
And to really get a feel for each of the band members in dcTalk, check out "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" from the same album. Has a section in the middle of the song that showcases each musician. Amazing!
Most favorite band as a teenager, which was many years ago. I recommend listening to all of the album. I also recommend the song red letters from their supernatural album.
The DJ was right. I grew up in the 80's & 90's and the Christian music scene was extremely limited. My Mom was one who highly limited my music choices. When DC Talk came along in the late 80's it literally rocked my world. They have so much going on all at the same time. Drums, base, lyrics, melody, instrumental, the list goes on and on. I'm a rhythm person. Like you, I love the drums and base line. It's like the heartbeat of a song. But I love to sing as well. And DC Talk never disappoints with great lyrics or amazing vocals. Even if you don't do videos about more of their songs, I want to encourage you to treat yourself to listening to more of their music. You won't regret a minute of it.
The first time I heard those 2 hits at the beginning of the solo it literally kicked my butt! Sent chills up my spine. One of my favorite songs from my favorite bands of all time! I really wish they would come back!!
As a parent in the 90's, I discovered this album and offered it to my kids as a safe alternative to what was currently out there in the rock world. Thank you for your reaction. ❤
About that line, "the chief of sinners," St. Paul the Apostle, who had originally been named Saul and previously persecuted the early believers in Jesus, calls himself this in one of his letters to Timothy, whom he was mentoring, in the New Testament. Here it is, I Timothy 1:15. It's part of a section in which he's telling about the magnitude of God's grace, because Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners from death, God's wrath, and all other consequences of sin. So he's advocating a continual mindset of being humble, to receive the benefits of grace.
DC Talk were awesome in person. The album following this is also worth checking out. I have been following these guys for a long long time. TobyMac, Kevin Max, and Michael Tait. Their solo albums as well as now Michael Tait is with Newboys. Kevin Max did one album as lead for Audio Adrenaline. Toby Mac went solo. My 9 yr. old loves him.
Thank you for the trip on memory lane. If you like the DC Talk album please try the lean on me album it was my staple growing up. You got a like for getting me to laugh happily with the good dad joke this time with fishy. I am finding your 2/10 with the dad jokes with me so good job. Blessings.
The Jesus Freak album (well cassette tape for me, and then the CD) was my goto background music when studying.... Dunno if it helped my marks, but remains my all time favourite album.
Man DC Talk is so killer! Whether Christian or Secular, they are absolutely fire!!! I love that you actually understand whats going on in the music so you can appreciate it for what talent was provided.
My parents became Christians when I was a baby. My dad is a music freak, but he knew had to stop listening to certain things because they weren't honoring God. He discovered Newsboys, DC Talks Skillet, etc. I grew up listening to these bands, so hearing someone enjoy them now make me tear up a little bit.
I just recently went through “How to listen to and understand great music” from The Great Courses which delves into understanding the nuances and layers found in great Classical/Concert music. I absolutely love almost every song from this album for the tracks have so many layers. With none dominating and throughout the songs each layer has its moment to shine.
This album takes me back. I heard songs from this album for the first time at a Billy Graham crusade in Sacramento. If you listen to their album before this, you will see a huge difference in the sound. Love this album. So many good memories listening to these guys.
I grew up listening to these guys. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane. If you like good bass licks one of my favorites came from Whireheart’s Freedom album and their Let the Kingdom Come track. So good. Slow build with a great crescendo.
This is probably my favorite song on the album, possibly tied with Jesus Freak (a great song in its own right, no doubt). And yeah, while dcTalk was just known as Kevin Max Smith, Toby McKeehan, and Michael Tait, but they had a first-rate backing band behind them. After dcTalk split up, the backing band did an album on their own called Platinum, under the band name Zilch. Then they essentially became a worship band known as SonicflooD. The first SonicflooD album was exceptional, with nothing else really like it in the worship arena, but then most of the founding members left and SonicflooD became just another generic radio-friendly worship band. Their bass player is a dude named Otto Price, and he's extremely good.
If you want to check out the band that really made rock music acceptable in the Christian sphere, check out Petra! Their album "Beyond Belief" is amazing, and feature some of the best musicians to ever live.
I had the original album and it was great but the 2013 remastered version of it is FANTASTIC! I've been stuck listening to it for several weeks now. Glad to see you giving it a listen!
Otto Price was the bass player for dc Talk. His bass lines on Between You and Me (same album) are unmatched on anything even today, secular or Christian.
I was fortunate. I was allowed anything labeled Christian, including metal. 😆 But I knew many families that said no rock music at all, Christian lyrics or not.
DC Talk is a family favorite. We have all their cd’s. I’m pretty sure my kids wore out a few when they were young. We’ve seen them in concert many times. We still follow TobyMac and Michael Tate who is now the lead singer of the Newsboys. You should check them out also!
My parents raised me on metal, then they converted to Pentecostalism. After that, music I bought was screened. Dc talk, newsboys, audio adrenaline, Benjamin Gate and red was my go to
This album caught everyone by surprise because it was such a turn from their previous sound. If you listen to one song from their three preceding albums, you'll notice a marked difference from one to the next, but none as extreme as Free at Last to Jesus Freak. And we LOVED IT!! The bassist during this time was Otto "Sugar Bear" Price, who has gone on to be a producer working with the Tobymac-founded Gotee Bros record label and even A&R guy with Warner Bros for a time. Awesome guy.
Love Toby Mac and DC Talk! Found them as an adult :O I wish this music had been around when I was young!!! Still awesome! So glad to follow along. Man I love your jokes! Always makes me laugh ;)))
I love everything from D.C. Talk and Toby Mac! Amazing music that is just as relevant today as it was in the 90s. You can turn it up loud while at the same time you are getting the gospel. We need more of this on secular radio. Maybe next time check out D C Talk's song Socially Acceptable. Talk about relevant for today!! It will change your thinking of right and wrong in this world.
BRO... i love that you are hitting the older Christian music. but seeing that you appreciate good bass i cant wait to hear you review "between you and me". DC Talk always has phenomenal bass play.
I remember my first time hearing them was when they were more 80's rap. I think the song "Heavenbound" was the song I had heard. It was off the self titled album (1995).
Otto Price was the bass player for DC Talk when this album came out. He's from Nashville area (Franklin, TN I think). I've always loved his playing. He went to my church when I lived in Franklin, TN and he's play bass on Sundays once in a while. I wouldn't just watch him when he did because I loved listening to his playing.
I love the bass in songs and DC Talk was my main group at that time. Toby MAC was in this band and now has his own you should check him out. I loved the words too.
Imho, *THE BEST CHRISTIAN ALBUM OF ALL TIME*. Not a single skippable song on the album. So stoked you’re doing this one!! I first heard this album when I was like 13(?)- Otto Price (bass) and Flea made me pick up my first instrument. This song was at least 10 Archies- I gotta save my 20s for Jesus Freak (🔥🔥🤘🏼), What if I Stumble, and In the Light lol
I was born in the 80s and grew up on the 90s and early 2000s christian music. Dc Talk was always at the top of my list. They were out there and funky nothing like the traditional stuff from church services. Spoke to us teenagers at the time. Ive also saw Micheal Tate in concert in st louis at winter jam years ago not long after dc talk broke up All three men are amazing and of course you know Tobymac is doing fantastic on his own and Micheal is now the lead singer of Newsboys. Which newsboys is another one you should check out Leonardo. From the 90s to what they have now. You also listen to a whole lot of hillsong as well you check out theyre earlier stuff too. Love you channel btw
Honestly the only DC Talk I still listen to to this day is "What If I Stumble", "Just Between You and Me" (Jesus Freak) and "Consume Me" (Supernatural). For an extra treat, checkout DC Talk label mates Grammatrain and their track "Pain" ( ruclips.net/video/WkpF-m1Ydl0/видео.html ) Speaking of "influential", a decade before DC Talk's seminal moment in "Jesus Freak", ill-fated Regency Records put together a compilation album (remember those?). The year was 1987. The album was _California Metal_ . Everyone seemed to have a tape dub, but no originals. It would introduce tens of thousands of youth to the Christian side of the west coast metal scene not Stryper. Therein we heard Barren Cross, Guardian, Neon Cross, Deliverance, Hero, and hastily assembled studio project of the album producer because they were short one song, Mastedon (who has it's own storied history). Only Hero (Not to be confused with Swedish band of same name) would fail to get any further attention. As a churched teen where the most modern "approved" contemporary music was Sandi Patti, Steve Green, and Bill Gaither, this release was downright "scandalous". Christian hard music was always a bit tumultuous fighting a two front war for relevance in the Church and legitimacy in the industry. Tough row to hoe, but we ended up with some doozies. I'm sure they'll come up at some point in the future.
It's weird...i've been going back and listening to, not only them, but quite a few other 90's God bands. And now that I'm able to listen OBJECTIVELY (without the cloud of "I have to be a good little Southen Baptist boy and listen to my perfect little Christian music" hanging over me), Man, I'm BLOWN AWAY at the quality. The songwriting genius (of whomever wrote the material...TobyMac and Mark Heimermann primarily)...the melodies, harmonies, chord progressions...everything. I'd put it up there with any secular artist you wanna name! Just brilliant!
I love this band so much! Great hearing your responses :) Funny story: I first heard them when I was 11 or 12, on the way to a soccer game in a van full of boys. I was the only girl. Suddenly I heard these loud rap/rock songs play with the only recognizable word being SEX. Up to this point I had pretty much only listened to classical (Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart...) with my mom, or classic rock with my dad...needless to say, I was a wee bit uncomfortable until I found out what the band and music was actually about.
DC Talk jesus Freak album was an anthem of defiance aimed at the soul of rock & roll, My favourite song was in the light. This song is still my favourite song of all time, it doesnt take the stance of talking about God, bible bashing talking in religious cliches, rather, from the stance of a non-christian wanting and striving to be "IN THE LIGHT" acknowledging that he/she is still trying but not yet there from a Christian perspective. When I was down and out in my life, tempted daily with what the world had to offer only one song was the buffer. "OH DEAR LORD THREE THINGS I PRAY" and what was that...."TO SEE THEE MORE CLEARLY, LOVE THEE MORE DEARLY, TO FOLLOW THEE MORE NEARLY, DAY BY DAY ". More than just the well crafted, well thought of lyrics with Stellar harmony, More than just the pleasure of listening to it was the fact that these lyrics planted and watered the seeds that still keeps me wanting GOD EVEN AS A STRUGGLING CHRISTIAN HUSBAND AND FATHER doing his best providing for his family yet leaking everyday, and with tears in my eyes I SAY, I GOT TO LIKE IT, LOVE IT NEED IT, SOME FREEDOM FROM MY STRIFE, I KNOW I NEED SOME JESUS IN MY LIFE.
Thank you for sharing these videos! I love watching and listening to your feedback on it! This whole album is so good! I’d love to hear you react to some real old school newsboys. Song is called “lost the plot” it’s a very grudge vibe and sound. Keep up the great work, you are doing an awesome job! Also- I grew up in the 80s and 90s - DC talk was definitely a game changer for Christian music. Jars of clay is another one, newsboys, and Petra.
Love this song. 1 of the guys is part of Newsboys United. Please react 2 they're song Love One another. The one that raps in DcTalk is Tobymac. Please react to his song when love came through.
You should check out Newboys! Mainly with in the last 8 years. One of the singers from DC talk, is now the lead singer with them. You should check out the album " Born Again".
There were plenty of Christian rock bands before DC talk...they were initially more hip hop, but in the mid 90s, as rock bands were shifting in style, DC Talk changed their style to this.
Hey man awesome video, you should react to "the blessing Aoteroa " I know you already saw the blessing but the one for my country is very cool. Much love brother 🤙
Have you heard any Keith Green? He was sort of the Christian Billy Joel/Elton John from the 70s and 80s. I warn you, a lot of his songs are long, but they're amazing!
"Jesus freak " is the greatest Christian theme album. I've been a freak since I was 14 and always will be.Never ever regret giving my life to Christ.I know God as my God and know Him as my Father. each of us will have a moment in our lifes when we will meet Christ. I hope you will say yes too Him.
How about some POD this band bridge the gap from Christian to secular market, great songs Southtown, rock the party, alive, youth of the nation , set your eyes to Zion
Great Song
Great Album
Great Band
With 3 Distinctive Singers
foi um prazer ouvir o DCTALK lindo demais
I saw them in concert 10 times growing up. I still go to Toby's concerts every chance I get
DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline and Kutless is what I grew up on! And of course TobyMac !
I saw Kutless opening for Audio A before Kutless was well known.
The bass player’s nickname was ‘Sugar Bear’!
🤘🏻YEEESSSSSS!!!!!🤘🏻 BA BA-BA-BA BA BA! BA-BA-BA BA BA! BA-BA-BA BA BA! 🙌🏻
Well Helloooo 90’s childhood! I’ve missed you!

Great comment Jason! In the Light is an AWESOME song (probably my favorite on this album), and I think it still holds up today
Yes all of these
Yes yes!! In the light, what if I stumble!!

Yes all are amazing in their own way. Absolutely must listen...I can't think of a DC Talk song that's not worth listening to.
More DC Talk! I can't wait for you to get to Colored People! 🥰 I grew up on this band. 🥰😍🥰

Very TRUE!
My all time favorite Christian band
If you like that bass you NEED to listen to "Jesus Is Just Alright" by dcTalk from their live album "Welcome to the Freak Show".
And to really get a feel for each of the band members in dcTalk, check out "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" from the same album. Has a section in the middle of the song that showcases each musician. Amazing!
Just go through that entire live album. You will NOT regret it!
React to Audio Adrenaline! Another Legendary Christian Band from the 90´s
Yes... Some Kind of Zombie is especially good!
Love this album! One of my very first slbums 19yrs old. ❤❤❤
My Friend So Long is definitely one of their best songs
Most favorite band as a teenager, which was many years ago. I recommend listening to all of the album. I also recommend the song red letters from their supernatural album.

Such a powerful and great song!! DC Talk rocks!
Like it, love it, need it…one of the best out there
I used to listen to this band years ago...so good to hear them again 🔥💞
As a parent in the 90's, I discovered this album and offered it to my kids as a safe alternative to what was currently out there in the rock world. Thank you for your reaction. ❤
Base, guitar, and vocals all enjoyable.
I grew up on PETRA (Christian Rock 1987) "This means War"
Sounds very interesting!

You can't go wrong with any song on this CD. Jesus Freak is one of the greatest Christian CDs ever made. The song " in the light" is a great one.
Love this song. 1 of the guys is part of Newsboys United. Please react 2 they're song Love One another. The one that raps in DcTalk is Tobymac. Please react to his song when love came through.
Lol I thought the answer to the joke was gonna be “something with a good hook” lol 😂
It's been like 15 years since I've heard this song. It reminds of Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
You want a real treat? Watch their concert videos. Some of the best concerts I have been to over the years. Man I miss them as a group.
To me music is just as much worship as the words that are sung. Love how you get in to the music
Hey man awesome video, you should react to "the blessing Aoteroa " I know you already saw the blessing but the one for my country is very cool.
Much love brother 🤙
I love this song. 10/10! I love all their music! They were my favorite until they split up.
Have you heard any Keith Green? He was sort of the Christian Billy Joel/Elton John from the 70s and 80s. I warn you, a lot of his songs are long, but they're amazing!
see, there's all kinds of us Christians out there:)
😂 you should listen to their early stuff... The song "shes that kind of girl"
You should react to DC Talk -What Have We Become. From the same album
There is a song that brings me to knees I think Jesus culture does it but it might be Matt Redman but it’s the song holy and the drums you will love
How about some POD this band bridge the gap from Christian to secular market, great songs Southtown, rock the party, alive, youth of the nation , set your eyes to Zion
