  • Today we visit Ponferrada, a small city in the Bierzo region in the north of Spain that offers great quality of life and fantastic food and wine. One of Spain's little-known gems and well worth a visit if you are in that part of the world.

    Ponferrada, such a historic town. The Camino de Santiago (Camino Francés) passes through here after the steep descent down from la Cruz de Ferro to Molinaseca then on to Ponferrada. It is also the starting point of another Camino route: Camino del Invierno (the Winter Way) - basically an alternative route to Santiago from Ponferrada that takes the walker through lower hills, thereby avoided the worst of any snow covered paths in the winter.
    The local dialect is called "Berciano", which is basically a mixture of Gallego, Castellano and some Asturiano. My family speak this dialect, although I understand very little of it. It's sufficiently different to the Castellano Spanish to make it quite difficult to understand.
    There is a large reservoir nearby, the "Embalse de Barcena", whose power station will be shutting down next year to decarbonise the power generation, which has been gradually moving over to more and more wind turbine power generation. Traditionally, there were two coal-fired power stations here. The other one has been a museum for some time, and it's nearer the city.
    It's a rich agricultural, particularly wine cultivating region. The Mencia wine from the region is truly spectacular. Nearby villages, like Cacabelos, have annual wine festivals where a huge variety of wines and other local produce are available for tasting, and purchasing of course.

    Thanks for the video. I’ve been to Spain 3 times now (all in the south) and this summer would’ve been my fourth trip to the North but due to COVID it’s been tricky to get out of Canada. Possibly in Sept, I can get across the ocean. We have flights but awkward times and some are pricey and rules to self isolate upon return. I’ve really enjoyed seeing your videos in the North and Portugal. It keeps inspiring me to go back. I just love the Spanish lifestyle. Mexico is closer to us but not as special like ambience in Spain. Spanish classes are very popular here!! 😊from Toronto, Canada

      The problem that Stuart has with these videos of city visits is that he barely gets comments, usually less than 100, since these videos are commented only on those who are really interested in life in Spain. With covid videos he gets hundreds of comments that will give him more gains, but at the cost of a much lower quality of comments, most only interested in giving importance to conspiracy theories or criticizing the left or right wing

    As someone born in Ponferrada I love to see people falling in love with my city, that is the city of everyone that wants to visit. Even when life had taken me around the world my hear will allways belong to El Bierzo.
    Although is a shame now with the current situation Ponferrada is just a shadow of what it used to be, but definetly it still have more than enough to offer to justify taking as much time as necessary to go and visit.
    Thank you very much for your video and your love for my home place, I hope a lot of people can take a bit of El Bierzo in their hearts after visiting thanks to your advice.

    Stuart, thanks for a great video. I had no idea Ponferrada was so
    interesting. I walked the Camino twice, in 2013 and 2014, and each
    time I walked to Ponferrada from Foncebadon, a 6 to 7 hour walk, and I
    was so exhausted by the time I arrived that I went to bed early at the
    hostel and left early the next morning so I hardly saw anything of the
    town. Now I wish I had, and maybe I'll go back the next time I'm in
    Spain.
    Although its a small place I seem to recall that there is a fair sized
    airport there.

    • @markdonovan1540
      @markdonovan1540 4 года назад

      Hi Rick, firstly, congratulations to you on walking your two Caminos. The trek from Foncebadón to Ponferrada is a tough stage of gradual ascent to Cruz de Ferro and a long steep descent to Molinaseca (which is where I stopped, although I started from Rabanal del Camino that day).
      As far as I know, there is no airport in or nearby Ponferrada at all. The nearest national airport would be at León, about 76km east of Ponferrada. The nearest international airports would be at Oviedo in Asturias and Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Sometimes, while walking on a long Camino, the towns and villages can often seem to blur into one :-)

    • @kkayaker
      @kkayaker 4 года назад +1

      @@markdonovan1540 I stand corrected. There is no airport in Ponferrada. I should have checked on the internet before posting that. I had thought there was an airport because the first year I walked the Camino I walked for about 20km with a couple of Finnish girls who had arrived in Burgos the night before and they said they intended to walk to Ponferrada, over several days of course, and then fly home. I was left with the impression that they were flying from Ponferrada but they were probably taking a bus or train to Madrid and flying from there.

    Mouthwatering stuff. Good fresh food and wine. Can't beat it. I could quite happily live on good bread, olives, cheese, wine and some nice fruit!
    One of the things I most miss about Spain is ripe stone fruit, particularly nectarines and peaches.
    Those we get in the UK are a joke, by comparison.
    When I was going up, you could find/pick amazing ripe plums.
    However, cherries, for some reason, are particularly good this year.
    Had my first punnet last week. Delicious! 😋😋
