- Here's how I process my vocal tracks using the stock plugins that come with Logic Pro X. The plugins are, in this order:
1. Speech Enhancer (or Izotope Dialog De-noiser) for line/background noise removal
2. EQ
3. Compressor
4. De-Esser (if needed)
5. Adaptive Limiter

I have been using Logic for 3 years and never knew about the legacy trick. Thank You
Holy cow, the audio effects used in this really do the trick. Compressor is the thing I've been looking for, for ages. It's unbelievable how much these tools make my audio better to listen to.
Man I been looking all over RUclips for someone to do a speech to edit in Logic Pro X and do a plugin processing to clean and bring the vocal/speech to a clean/clear professional level-and you nailed my friend thank you for taken the time to do this tutorial much grateful.
Ps. I know it’s been a long time since you did that tutorial-but you do a 2020 update with some base to the voice pleaseeee..
Thanks again and to hear from you.
Aaron Dowd I may have found the mic to do just that-with not much really EQ..
The SHURE SM 7B 🎙 microphone
Aha!
Aaron Dowd
Now I have the Shure sm7B with a cloudlifter for about a month now, and for me it’s the best microphone for my voice...I’m in the process getting my first podcast running in a few days and I wish I had purchased 3 more sm7B’s
I purchased the (Rode Caster Pro) and that dose it all very well (a one man setup)..
I got my graphic designer who created a killer logo for my Podcast...I’m all set..
Ps. When I let some friends and family listen to my test recorded with the Rode Caster Pro with sm7B-They thought I went to a radio station to record my Podcast...
You just gave me the whole process for Final Cut Pro. Thank you so much!!!
This was BEYOND helpful! 6 year later
Glad to hear!
Just so you know, you're content is still found and very useful for podcast beginners like me.
Much appreciation for taking the time to explain you're process. And speaking in a clear and consistent way ! 👍
Thanks for that!
That compression part was so helpful. I've been doing it all wrong
OMG I'm in love with you bro! I have been looking for that speech enhancer thing forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I know I'm not the only one
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching.
Giving you a thumbs up, because your explanation for processing spoken vocals is clear, precise and to the point. Amazing, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, very useful. And, yes thanks for the Legacy trick...
You're welcome, glad you found it useful.
Thank you so much. This was really helpful, as a first time podcaster and tech noob, I really appreciate the pro tips.
I have been all over RUclips and the web. This is the best and most concise video or demo of setting up a dynamite Voice Over Temple. Thank you for this video. You should record a little course on this and sell it!
@@aarondowdplaysdrums Thank you so much. I'll check it out.
You saved my life man!!! 😭 Thank you!
Thanks this helped me a lot! Im about to post my first RUclips video
Glad it helped!
Thank you, for your teaching. I am new to audio editing and appreciate your advice.
This is a "classic" video for those starting out in Podcasting.
Nice, cool to hear! I’m still doing mixing and mastering, but just for my band these days. My latest mix (just posted last night) is on TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@koltonmoore_thecleverfew/video/7320807814316723487
Finally someone using a sure beta for podcasts...these mics are underrated to me and have a sweet spot for high gain. They just sound great. Also I would make a preset setting and save as a template so it’s easy to dial in consistently. The best tracking sessions are well planned before your sessions and this helps get you started.
Great work! I really enjoyed watching and learning.
I am getting ready to launch my first podcast. This was super helpful! Thanks, Aaron.
Great to hear!
Simple, directly and very, very useful. Thx
This was excellent. Straight to the point and very useful! Thank you!
Thanks for this useful and easy tutorial for optimal podcast production - I'm Also Aaron and composer/new podcaster and local musician in Baltimore with the band Greasy Hands.
Glad to help!
I'm about to launch a podcast, and I have recorded the vocals for the first episode,. THIS is exactly what I was looking for. I'm excited to arrive home and try it! I'm sure that these tips will improve the sound.
Suscribed.
I followed your great tips, and it developed into this: bit.ly/2oOInDL
I uploaded it to SoundCloud, but what do you think is the best option to host a podcast?
Thank you so much!! Learned a lot in so little time, extremely helpful video!
Rad. Thankyou!
Glad to help!
Thanks for this 🔥🔥
Thank you so much for this video; applying these plugins really helped clean up my vocal audio.
Excellent workflow and explanation.
Wow this denoise feature is way easier than those plugins thank you bro
Happy to help!
0:44. 1:44(with (Enhancer) 2:17 (with EQ) 2:42 (Low cut) 3:52 (Peak Compressor) 4:32 (Desser) Adaptive Limiter (5:41)
This video contains everything I was looking for! Awesome and thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. This was terrific. Works like magic. Very very helpful.
Glad to hear that!
Nice work - thank you! In addition you could set markers for each step / plugin usage.
so much great info in here. Thanks so much for posting it
Thanks Andy, glad you liked it
Thank you so much for creating this!!
Great content
Helpful video. Thanks Aaron!
You're welcome! Glad it helped.

I Will Keep Up With You. So Keep Putting Up Awsome Stuff. Thanks For Replying.
thank you!
Hi,great tutorial
But why we don't apply normalisation
This is a huge help, thanks!
Great video dude! Keep up the great work.
Super helpful, thanks!
Excellent.
Thank You
Great tutorial
YO this video was so helpful! I even got my voice to sound even better than yours in my opinion lol, I dont mean that in a mean way at all obviously - just saying that you are awesome and you helped me so much! This should have way more views!!
I am actually quite dumb, and was over enthusiastic lol. Blessing and a curse. I am having some issues with a few little things and would love to pay for your assistance. Could I send you a sample of the same length and you take a quick crack at it? I have a really nice $300 mic - but I am not getting perfect sound out of it. I would rate my processing at like a 7 or a 8 right now. You can have a listen. Other people say it sounds great, but I know theres a couple more tweaks. Would love your help, even if its out of the norm for you. All in all, yours is better! 😂
Great video !! :-)
Nice work, but check the captions!
Awesome tutorial.... 🙌🏾 Also if you don’t mind me asking, 🙋🏽 what audio interface are you using? 🤔
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I have a question? Why to normalize at bouncing after all the processing for getting around -16 LUFS?
I don't think you have to.
I believe it's called Logic Pro "Ten" (roman numeral X)...not Logic Pro "Ex".....as in Final Cut Pro X "Ten"........but I'm sure someone must have mentioned this already.
excelente explicación
thanks man
have to say the difference is minimal on RUclips ...while stats for the video show you at -2.3dB which is just right to my ears.
Thanks for your insight. I have been hoping to get a capable Mac, with Logic. Then there is also the challenge of video capture & editing, maybe its easier than it looks. Peace
Are there any filters or editing tricks to minimize or eliminate mouth clicks? (I know about hydration, biorwnw, apples, etc.) My large diaphragm condenser picks up so much that I've got to find a way to clean up spoken word vocals before I tackle an audiobook. Many thanks for a helpful tutorial.
How aren't you getting Hiss in your mic when talking? Noise Gate?
can you do a 2021 version?
This is super helpful. Thank you very much. Question, can this be saved as a template and then edit each parameter when I import audio clips from my RØDECaster Pro? Thank you again.
Why did the stick that in legacy
I appreciate your helpful and clear explanations, Aaron. I have a question however: for my voice over recordings, I don't need much EQ or compression and prefer a natural sound, but am interested in having an excellent processing quality in export (to mp3 or Wav). Do you think that Logic pro X will worth it and be more rewarding that Garageband or Studio one 3 for my use? Thank you for your time and answer.
Thanks man , TDIL.
Do you know how to sound like a real CM narration? Because the atmosphere is totally different and I really trying manage to get close to the sound.
My bad, sorry.
This is one of the sample makes me thrill.
ruclips.net/video/pPIBrSk9J9A/видео.html
This one too.
ruclips.net/video/yMQm3RwxvJM/видео.html
the result of your tutorial video is good, but when compared with the CM narration, the depth of sound and the "stand-out" feeling of the narration(sorry for my contrast description) are not that enough. Is it only because of the level of the recording equipment? or we can edit it through Logic Pro X ?
Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the answer.
So, on the editing side, is there anything I can move on in order to have a great sound performance?
I tried your tutorial today and it improved a lot btw.
This is great thank you so much Aaron! For my podcast I bring in both vocal tracks from the conversation (me and my guest) to logic. Should I be using these processing techniques on each track individually or should do them both at the same time through the master (and how exactly would I go about doing that if so?). Also on your video about adding compression you say to set the peak compression threshold to -12db but in this video you said to set it to -3db. Is there a reason for the discrepancy?
Also I'd love to hear a bit more about the EQ techniques, I don't know anything about this and what you did in this video went a little over my head. Do you have a more in depth look at that anywhere you could point me to? Thanks!
Thanks so much Aaron this is all really helpful!
Hey Aaron, this is very helpful as I edit my first podcast episodes. Something I'm not understanding: when bringing the loudness meter to -16, it then is unaffected by lowering or raising the mixer level. Integrated remains bouncing around -16 while I can bring the mixer level down to almost silent, or at the top peaking, and it still reads -16. I don't understand how this is a clear representation of where the mix volume should be...?
sidechain compression..?
can you do an update?
Thank you. Does the order of operations matter? I saw a few visa with a limiter or amplitude and compression applied first. Cheers 🙏🏼
Good question, the signal will flow from top to bottom of the plugins in the stack, so it's good to know that. But you can move the plugins around and see how it sounds. I think knowing what the plugins do and how they change the sound is probably going to be more important than the order they are in.
What did you do to get the level input so loud? We like the sound when we are about 10cm away from the mic, because we don't want that "radio" sound- but .. on our focusrite clarett 4pre USB we have to push the gain almost to 100% to get around -30db peaks when normally talking; we use 2 RODE procaster microphones. I find it odd that I pay so much for supposedly good preamps and still don't get that much gain; do you use a Mic booster in front or something? Thanks!
Thank you very much for sharing this interesting configuration, it sounds great; although I have a more modern version of Logic (I see the video in 2020), I have been able to rescue Legacy, very very interesting, really, it eliminates background noise, and I need to know, please: is this setting correct for recording? I mean, is it better to record with any plugin and then put the plugin, or does it matter? Thank you.
Aaron Dowd Thank you very much for responding, very kind. Yes, I am doing the recording test without plugins, it is much better, and the ones you advise are very practical, again very grateful, a cordial greeting.
Is it possible to hire you to check out a Logic file and give feed back regarding podcast sound quality? I'm new to using Logic and just want the final podcast to sound as clear as it can.
Sure! Drop me an email with a link to the file, aaron @ thepodcastdude.com. You can pay what you want here: www.buymeacoffee.com/aarondowd
Could you redo this with the latest Logic Pro? I didn't see the Legacy plugin in my updated version.
I stand corrected. I forgot to hold down the option key lol.
What program are you using to record this video?
I have a US Tascam 2x2 interface, and some zingyou microphones I bought off Amazon. Logipro recognizes that I am talking through the microphone, but when I playback I cannot hear myself speaking, even though I can see it did record my voice, any help? I'm new to this btw!
@@aarondowdplaysdrums thanks man I had figured it out the day I posted the comment lol I was just playing around with the settings and I found it!

Can you use Logic with a video editing software together? I am doing an interview/video podcast. If not, what would you suggest so I can edit both video and audio together?
edit the video and cut the audio along with it in your video editing software and then export the audio and process it in logic
Does this process work if your working with 2 people having a conversation?
The Production Guy yes, although it’s usually better to have each voice on its own track so you can make adjustments as needed. If it’s a combined track, the changes you make will affect both voices, which not always desirable.
7:42 and 7:59
why 0.8 as opposed to 0.2?
@@aarondowdplaysdrums sorry, asking about the limiter peak setting. Ive been told -.2 or -.3 is sufficient for when the audio is converted to mp3. was curious as to why you pull it down to -.8 , if it serves a function or if youre just playing it safe. thanks!
Hi, don't suppose you could help me. I'm trying to record a podcast with a friend, I have two xlr microphones set up on separate tracks in logic, they record fine but when I export the audio one mic sounds good but the other sounds faint, do you know why this could be?
Which mics are you using ?
I have clients who I edit podcasts for and their audio is less than stellar. Will this work to improve bad audio? I have been helping them improve their but they still can't seem to get it right.
They have good mics but use them incorrectly and the input levels might be a little hot. They were too far away from the dynamic mic. They have improved lately but could be better.
I still struggle with making the voices be more upfront.
How can I sound like I'm Terry gross from NPR. Besides plug my nose
The Podcast Dude I don't wanna sound like her. But definitely where it sounds more intimate. Do you know what plug in that is? I appreciate the reply
The Podcast Dude haha. You're right. Portlandia has a perf parody of that kinda stuff. Have a good day brotha
I've just taken all of your settings, but it doesn't sound like yours. First of all, your voice sounds much louder. Your waveform in Logic is bigger and I've already turned my gain up on the interface.
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your input gain levels are correct (loud but not clipping). If you’ve turned the gain knob all the way up on your audio interface and the signal still isn’t high enough, double check your recording software to make sure it isn’t lowering it in any way (some have auto-gain level features). If that isn’t the issue and your audio is still too low, you can add gain to the audio track itself using a plugin. Hope that helps!
How do you hold down option ?
until my like it was 666 likes.
Great job Aaron, is this possible in OBS studio!?
Aaron Dowd pretty basic ones bit there an option to use VST plugins. Cheers
