It was my great fortune to see the original band multiple times in the 70's and the great iterations that Roscoe and Don have kept going since the deaths of their bandmates. This is a mind blowing capture of artists that changed the way me and many of my great friends have experienced art and music. Thank you!!!!
Incredible band. I was lucky to sen them twice in İstanbul. But Roscoe Mitchell four times. I can't analyse this music. But I love it. For me this is hardcore Jazz.; shows the greatness of Jazz. Jazz can not be seperated from it's Black roots. These guys are my heros. We lost Bowie and Magoustut unfortunately. ..
Saw them in the early 80s after the release of the Full Force album. What a concert. Simply amazing. Even visually, the instruments on stage was outrageous.
This is some truly great stuff! I use it in my ART 101 college class to talk about the influence of African Art on Cubism, and the similarities between African Music, jazz, and Cubist structure.
Have always tried to get my ear around Art Ensemble of Chicago, this seems like this is the one that gets me. Some of their other recordings or performances I've seen don't seem to be this kind of straight up free spazz. Thanks for posting it.
Lived around the corner. All the young musicians wanted to be Joseph. They thought they could just pick up the horn and blow. He was nice about it but told them , 'No. Study. Work hard. Learn the count before you break the count..."
@@EddieJazzFan Hello....Don't know about that....The concert I saw was part of a tour in the Country, I 'd suppose......But it might have included some studio rec'ding, sure.......
I saw them in Seattle in the early 80's at a small tavern called Rainbow Tavern I think it was. I had only heard a couple records and I was blown away by how much more powerful they were live. This is the band that got me into Improved music and avant jazz. I was talking to Lester Bowie after the show and he said many of the pieces were meticulously composed. This surprised me and gave me a whole new level of understanding. In college we'd been experimenting with alternate composition techniques so I was only just beginning to put it together in my heart and head.
Lester Bowie was also in that group in 1983. Although Sun Ra and his Arkestra left Chicago in 1961, they left a huge influence which helped shape the early AACM including the Art Ensemble.
What?! How? Did he mention AECO in an interview somewhere? That's awesome, and yeah I can 100% see Eric listening to some Art Ensemble or some other groups like them.
Not necessarily, you have to be open to emotion and feeling what you hear. I never finished high school but it’s no different than looking at a piece of art, feel it.

One of my favorite Art Ensemble clips online, Great Black Music Ancient to the Future.
What a rythym section Malachi Favors and Don Moye were...they lit a fire under the front line for sure!!!
Amadou Don Moye!
Famadou oye
Im grateful to Mr Favors for sharing his wisdom and gift with me.

Joe Jarman is an artist that doesn’t get the accolades he deserves. Just brilliant.
Moers 1980. I was impressed. Since then, Mr Malachi has been one of my favorite bassmen.
pas mal mes félicitations
mais ratio quand même
Was lucky enough to see them perform here in Italy in the 80's
Italy is where Soul Note Records was located. Maybe they were recording during the time that they were there?

amazing! ... have they ever played with Sun Ra?
+(b)ananartista Actually, Moye played in the Sun Ra all stars for quite a while. The others didn't participate.

I love pushing the boundaries, virtuosity; Coltrane, Stravinsky, whomever. This is just a cacophony of crap.
Stephen Hicks You have a VERY open mind Stephen. VERY cool.
I have the sneaking suspicion that you do not love pushing boundaries as much as you think you do.
