    I just witnessed a miracle, my sister in law dove more than 100 miles at 65mph speeds with the e-barke on and made it home safe. She never knew the e-brake was on and never paid attention to the warning on the instrument cluster for 2hrs an 30 min driving on the highway. She´s got 8 years of driving experience I never thought she would ignore the instruments warning lingts. My wife and my baby were riding in the back seat. So I call this a miracle they didn´t get into an accident.

    I am a UK resident. I have been driving for almost 60 years. I notice now that 99.99% of drivers never engage the parking brake when stopped at traffic lights and similar situations but keep their foot on the stopping brake. This is particularly annoying on dark nights when a battery of bright lights shine in your eyes often for minutes at a time. The British Highway Code has a rule describing the correct procedure and mentioned the effect of keeping the braking pedal depressed and the likely effect on drivers behind. When I was taught all those years ago the use of the hand brake was mandatory if stopped for more than a few seconds. I witness passengers exiting cars on hills with the driver relying on his foot pressing the brake. It is extremely rare to see a driver engage the hand brake and I conclude that neither instructors or examiners think it important.

    If I'm using it as an emergency brake I'm holding it with the button pressed in until stopped so I have complete instant control of the pressure the whole time and not just pulling it up and letting go where you don't have instant control.

  • @ndonnelly883
    @ndonnelly883 2 года назад +7

    A. You are supposed to press the brake release when lifting the hand brake, This is to ensure you do not unecessarily wear out the brake and to ensure maximum tension. B. You are correct that it is not an emergency brake and should not be used to stop but the reason your car took a while to stop is because you never applied proper tension in the brake.
    The whole idea of the brake release is to smoothly go between no tension to high tension. The video basically demonstrated the same technique that 'the students failed on both with brake release and no brake release when stopping'
    It's good that it's being demonstrated that the hand brake is an essential part of parking but the method for applying the brake is wrong and an instructor will give you a minor for not bringing your hand brake to full tension.

    • @normanwells2755
      @normanwells2755 2 года назад +2

      I disagree. If your regular brakes fail, you're heading for a railway crossing and a train is coming that's an emergency and it is perfectly ok to apply the hand brake. Wouldn't you? I rarely use the hand brake for parking because in winter they can freeze.

    Hi so I have a question. I took my test couple weeks ago and failed. When I was pulling out I lift my foot of the the brakes for my car to creep forward but it didn’t. (Also my parking brake was released) So I panicked and pulled out too fast. Usually the creep gives me good time to pull out properly before I accelerate. Is there a reason why my car didn’t move? This also happened when I parallel parked. It moved back without me pressing the accelerate pedal but didn’t move forward. Also when I pulled into a parking lot I had to move up a little but it never creeped forward.Because of this I failed.

    Except for electronic parking brakes are going to apply themselves on pills up or down anyway and you you know you probably can defeat it but you don't need to it's they make it difficult to defeat, but it's important with the manual style break especially the foot time but as well as the handbrake, two always get into the habit of using it a lot if you don't use it for about 3 or 4 years it should actually just not work for the cable can break you know especially in high rust areas I can definitely happen now if the cable breaks will your parking brake stay stuck well maybe, can you drive with the stock market break depends on how much pressure was put on the desk and how hard you pressed down on the foot or up on the handle, something to consider if you give it lightly on level ground chances are you just ride the brake out burn the pad off it won't take long at all maybe about a half a day so it'll you'll smell it, but at least then you won't be stuck assuming everything else is working okay on the car anyway and it is just that you haven't used the parking brake a
    anything happens to someone who lives in the flatlands for a number of years and then decides to drive out to San Francisco or parts of Minnesota and find that there's a few hills out there and they'll find they need to use their parking brake, and then they'll find it put hiking break breaks the first time they use it because it's never actually used it. That's important.

      Fvaca _Fox I guess USA is so flat that they never had to really use the handbrakes. In Brazil we do have to use it. And here because of the hills we always hear a bad sound when putting back the car in gear. The pin that locks the gear box on park gets stuck, and because of that I learned that before turning off the car you have to put in Neutral, set the parking break, release the foot of the brake (so this can release the Weight of the car on the parking brakes) then press the brakes again and shift to parking. This way the bad sound never happened again. It feels terrible. Sounds like something is breaking. We drive a Honda.

    But all the key thing in here is whether or not you get to practice in a vehicle that you will be normally driving, you test in the same kind of vehicle. The testing places will always have the various types of parking brake cars they won't just have one time. You're not going to find a testing facility then only has cars that have the handbrake and some that don't and some that have the foot style on the left or some that have the automatic parking brake that just apply either also level or only not
    Another key is no when you're taking your driver's test will you be able to use a rental car that is rented in your parents or guardian's name and then you listed as additional driver? The answer is probably not at least not nowhere in the US do I know that that's possible but there may be exceptions I don't know and it would certainly be a state by state exception that there was an exception.
    Important thing to remember is the car you're being tested in you need to know everything about it, so always when you make a reservation at a testing center which most are taking that now in a lot of states, other words you can't wait in line and then expect to take out driving test, unless you've already made an appointment and then again you could be waiting in line just to make an appointment but usually you can do it online now too.
    If there's any indications there of the type of car that you were driving most State systems will indicate this is the car that you are currently driving is a vehicle that has a manual handbrake we will reserve a car for you that has a manual handbrake that way you should be able to pass the test just fine. If the car you'll be driving does not have a handbrake indicate such or don't check the box that says manual handbrake and then you will be reserved a standard vehicle with probably the footstyle at the very least and possibly an automatic style.
    As most of these DMVs are state run some are privately run but pay the state to be indicated, the privately run companies might have a wider range of cars and newer cars, whereas the state vehicles might be older style cars but they will still have a few newer cars with more automatic features such as automatic parking brake.
    it still depends every state is not going to have every single DMV outfitted exactly the same so you might have to travel a bit or not go to your favorite DMV to take your test based on the vehicle that you will be driving once you receive your license.
    Most driving schools should be teaching both hand brakes the footstyle and the left manual if you do manual and automatic if you automatic and then as well as an automatic handbrake versus automatic versus foot style we should have vehicles that have all types of emergency brake systems in the more in the newer cars specifically for driving schools.
    Vehicles also have the emergency stump brake for the tester and some even have a secondary steering wheel if they have the overstock. They still make those.
    Myself, I learned in one of the last double steering wheel double brick double acceleration style cars. Imagine being an instructor having to learn the European style of driving! I don't believe this room available in the manual mode but they were definitely available in automatics. I think starting it around the oh I want to say early '70s

    Well the handbrake is an emergency brake in fact and that is what it is called and has always been called and it's supposed to be used in a pumping fashion while holding in the button you wouldn't just pull up on it expecting the car to stop smoothly it's better to leave the pump action also however car in neutral fashion unfortunes not in gear car in neutral another way you can do it is to do engine braking by downshifting Toyotas are awesome for this in the transmission's can definitely handle it they're designed to do that one by shifting down into the lower gear or gears one at a time as you really travel down to about 10 miles an hour and then use to handle break as in that pumping action until you come to a complete stop in a safe area up in the side of the road
    With a foot break on the left style it's a little bit tougher and can still be done but it's going to be done on drum brakes and just a little bit tougher looks just put it that way. Later on it was disc brakes on all four wheels and the left foot style was still in globe and still is, you never mind handbrake on a lot of Japanese models but not Toyota, go figure. That's generally because the Toyota was initially intended as a hybrid model between Chrysler Toyota
