Hope everyone had a blessed Christmas, and happy holidays 😊 Now is the time to spend time with loved ones, and also take some time for yourself to rest (and maybe go fishing 😅). How have your fishing been recently? Comment down below!
Wow amazing video! I was always interested in crabbing. Thanks and hope to see more crabbing vids in future when got "season". Nothing better than cooking & eating ur own catch!
1 good tips abt crabbing is do give a handshake on the very 1st crab landed thus your hands will be good on crabbing, try it & let me know the magic of this tips😂
hi jives, just got into fishing this year. what ultralight rod would you recommend under 50 dollars? i usually fish around bedok jetty and bedok resevoir using my medium rod.
Hi! We actually haven’t used a ultralight in awhile, as we mostly use surf, our short rods are actually boat rods given from people or bought at clearance sales. But I would personally recommend the Ugly Stik series, very durable. Did a quick search on Carousel and saw this: carousell.app.link/s4j2djfRDPb You might want to also consider what is the purpose of the rod. If its for jigging, it would be good to choose a rod with a suitable casting weight rating for the weight of jigs you usually cast. For those, its best to go down to the tackle shops and ask for advice 👍
Do you have a size limit (from government/fisheries) that is applies to these blue crabs? As they appear very small and we would return all these to the water. Maybe you have no size and amount limit? Consistent small sizes (what you caught) normally means high fishing pressure on stocks.
@@Paul-w9r1r Hey Paul, thanks for your comment. We are based in Singapore, where there are no size limits nor regulations. Do note that compared to our neighbours in Southeast Asia, the size and abundance of crabs (and fish) is much lower due to extensive loss of mangroves and seagrass which are crucial nurseries for fisheries. This is mainly caused by land reclamation along our coastlines as part of the government’s effort to expand our land space as a small country. As such, the average size of the crabs are smaller in our country compared to overseas. Do note that this is purely observational and I don’t have a scientific journal to support this. It is also worth noting that the crabs we caught in this video is the Flower Crab (Portunus pelagicus) and not the Maryland blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) which typically grow up to about 9 inches wide. If you have watched our previous videos, we try to self-impose fishing limits for ourselves and release any critically endangered species like the shovelnose guitarfish. For these flower crabs, we try not to bring home those under 6 inch carapace. If you ask local fishermen, or visit our local wet markets, the flower crabs are actually around this size. Cheers, Jives Fishing
@@JivesFishing thank you very much for your reply and knowledgeable info. Also great of you to advise of the Flower Crab (& not a "Blue", which I thought). I will look at the info on F.crabs as I'm ignorant to their existence. I'm in Western Australia, our crabs are called "Blue Manna" crabs (your normal Blue Crab??) and very heavily, regulated size and take numbers. Too many greedy, non thinking people in the past depleting numbers drastically. Poachers are still active, however we have a direct response ph# to fisheries enforcement. My city (Perth) is situated on the Swan River and this river has an abundance of aquatic life and contains B/manna's, never (been) in huge numbers (reasonably abundant though) and are (controlled) fished. Their size is normally big, 200+ mm carapace. Sad to hear of the environmental losses around Singapore. Maybe some local environmental groups may replant Mangroves in areas available? We replant river bank vegetation and depleted mussel/oyster beds. And good on you guys for being (self) environmentally observant. I have no issue eating the resources, they are yum. Conserving and utilising the resources CAN coexist. I'll hook up with your channel, all the best. Just now web info, indeed seems your F/crab (blue swimmer)same as our B/manna.
@ No worries Paul. Australia is a really great place, we have been to Hervey Bay, queensland before for a fishing trip twice and really liked the place, and the fact they have size limits, and the locals follow them closely. There were also enforcement agents that regular the fishing jetties to check on the catch sizes. The two of us who run this channel are very supportive of size limits. But we believe that there is not enough incentive for our government to put enforcement into place as we dont have a commercial fishery. We import most of our fish from Malaysia and Indonesia. Mangrove replanting works are underway at areas like Pulau Ubin, a island northeast of Singapore! Local universities like the National University of Singapore run replanting projects, and they have worked with government agencies to conduct “hybrid engineering” which combines both replanting with “hard engineering” approaches like building of seawalls to combat sea level rise and climate change. However, I believe one of the biggest difficulties in mangrove restoration efforts in Singapore is the lack of scientific study regarding species tolerances for wave action and salinity levels. The decline of fish species in Singapore is actually very real. 10-15 years ago, catch reports of big fishes are abundant. Nowadays, its once in a blue moon. We still have a long way to go in conservation. Cheers and happy new year in advance from Singapore
@@JivesFishing Yes Jives, public pressure (+effective scientific intervention) on our Govt's (Federal &state) has motivated them to formulate and enforce fish regulations before stocks suffer. Difficult, once the stock crashes to re-establish. Thanks, you guys need to be proactive in educating your Govt. Singapore is ahead of the world in many other aspects. BTW, Vietnam is very well educated (best world practices) in mangrove research and restoration, as far as I recall. Sad to hear of the large fishes decline. This may interest you and I have zero affiliation or any other vested interest, I just know from previous signage action, that "people power" can have significant positive outcomes. Gr**np**ce has many signable campaigns that specifically may have a positive impact on these "big fishes" decline, in your area and others. All the best, I'll check out all your other vids.

If it’s small, do you return it to the sea?
We try to keep those only above 6 inches carapace.

Not sure you guys should release the smaller crabs
Thanks for the feedback.
They should go to sembawang near to the pier. Definately flower crabs or blue sea crabs. Changi Beach not much crabs.
I see, thanks for the info!
Dont spoil market ah
y dont use a crab trap, i think will be much easier?
Sea spiders
May i ask what kind of crab net you are using?
You may purchase them from gary tackle. $4.50 for one. Just ask them for crabbing net for rods
Oo okie thanks alot
long time no video from u guys
Yup. Been busy and also not catching anything from past few sessions 😅
The crabs are still quite small in size. They should be given more time to grow bigger.
