Film looks great largely because the color is better and more accurate. It is possible with digital too but requires a lot of time to calibrate your color properly. Some imperfections about film are aesthetic like grain, however, without grain, your image has no texture. Therefore, I always add some 50D grain to my footage.
@@matthewphillips5483 Colours are subjective, there no rights or buts. The highlight roll off in film is still superior to digital but with filters you can achieve really good roll offs even on a digital camera, as for grain, I mean there digital tools for that, you be none the wiser. Another thing is, film is shot differently than digital today, by that I mean the techniques are different, people did not have luxury of high speed camera today, you had to get your exposure correct or else you be screwed, and lens stabilisation was a luxury in the 80s, so people had to do high shutter speeds or use tripods. If you use techniques of film to shoot digital you can easily emulate the sort of composition that was common back then. The only cameras I found to be closest colour wise to film is Samsung NX1, Fuji cameras, and Panasonic S5.
Your style and voice comes through regardless of the camera you use. Tweaking the jpegs to feel like film just enhances the consistency you have in your work. Damn man, you’re good!
I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m learning so much. From the way that you film and edit your videos to you sleeping into a microphone is so comforting.
"we are on the east side of detroit.... by myself... i got it on me tho, so don't worry about that. im about to go back to the crib to talk to yall about shooting -- well, not shooting" lmao i'm subbed off the strength of that thanks for sharing your greatness, man! this was dope to watch!
Fuji cameras are the closest to film cameras with the whole feeling of the cameras and The shooting experience! Nothing beats film tho! Also you are probably my favorite photographer, never disappoints! 🔥
@@Jay-jb2vr Film has down sides too. I am into motion pictures, not photography, and film is prohibitively expensive, has issues with solid registration (getting a stable image that doesnt "bobble"), cameras are noisy and heavy, and the amount of light required to get proper exposure for fine grain emulsion is ungodly. Shooting on film is amazing but film is a diva. Also, film can be largely replicated with digital if you put a LOT of time into proper coloring (or better yet hire a good colorist.)
I don’t really use presets but I’m buying because you’re one of my favorite artist and deserve to be supported. Can’t wait to see what the future brings for you.
Not sure if you’ve ever shot film or I’ve been into the dark room before but I highly recommend the entire process is very gratifying when you go out on the street shoot something with film and have no idea how it’s gonna turn out until you get into the dark room it’s really awesome it’s a very fun process
You've got a great eye, brother. Terrific images, colors and textures give it all a consistent structure. I think you captured the film 'feel' really well. A lot of soul and grit in these photos.
Just wanna say your videos inspired me to buy a Fuji camera to replace my Nikon and it’s fr the best photography decision I’ve made. Really Preciate ur videos
Love what you've been doin. Took me awhile but after watching your vid about company's responses to BLM I just sold off all my Canon gear and picked up an XT4. Really appreciate your commentary and viewpoints.
Quick tip, you can use the raw files with the film simulation. If you go to camera profiles on a raw photo shot on Fuji, you can just apply the simulation there and have the depth of a raw file
It's good to see a brotha in the "D" shooting some street photography. I'd shot a lot of it during the 90's into early 2000 before I'd left here for the west coast, majoring in art. Illustration photography was a major. During my years in Detroit, I'd shot all film. The MCS train station on Michigan Ave. I've photographed the interior from top to bottom. I'm glad that I was able to get in there before Ford motors bought it. A lot of black and white negative and printed in the darkroom. Good job young blood. I've subscribed. And it's good to see the young generation helping to bring back film.
This one is awesome. Watching your subtle adjustments make photos like these really opens my mind to experiment in new ways in Lightroom. All great photos, too!
Also, adding with my own experience from film, I’ve never shot digital in my entire life. I just got a canon power shotsx720hs. Shooting film my entire life. For color photos you definitely want to lower the contrast and raise contrast for black-and-white. I think that also does it great deal for making your filmesque digital photos
The editing you did on these is incredible?? I was skeptic at first bc most film-presets are too strong and make it look so artificial but especially the second and last pic are just *chefs kiss*
Best way to get the "film look" is to use vintage optics imo. i'd be very interesting if you made a video about using old SLR lenses with the fuji, id love to see that!
Grateful that the Moment guys recommended your channel and I checked it out. Shooting with an XT-3, love my jpegs, love your style and your edits. So excited to learn a lot from your process. Thank you for sharing 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Cheers!
If you shoot raw + jpg you can import the raw file with the develop settings set to camera settings under apply during import. This will give you the jpg look but in the raw file and all sliders will be at 0.
XT-4 user here, I love Fuji and the film sims. I use the Portra 400 recipe off of the site nearly all the time, and I pair that with a vintage Contax Zeiss 50mm to push the feel even more. I really liked this vid, man, and I admire the different look into Detroit that isn't so cynical. I'm subscribed and will be watching.
My friend pulled up to a shoot with a Fuji XT-3. We went back to the studio to edit the photos and I couldn’t believe how good the JPGs looked. We ended up not editing the photos much because they looked so damn good out of camera.
Watching this from Florida, but born and raised on the Westside of Detroit. I was hoping you had it on you lol Will purchase to support creatives back home.
Soon as I saw my family house I was nervous for you 🤣🤣 Lawd he on the Eastside looking suspect but you made it look good. Taught me something so thanks!
Also, I love taking lenses from my film cameras and adapting them to my digital to give some softer edges and just in general give a bit more of the optics my film shots have.
#FujiGang!! Also don’t know if you know but you can change your colour profile from adobe to any film sim from your camera and apply it to a raw file. Doesn’t have the shadows/highlights like you can set in camera for the jpegs but it’s a good start and you get the extra flexibility of a raw file. Keep the vids up bro 🔥
i’d say always just shoot RAW + JPEG. you can then convert in camera to a different film simulation (can also be done in capture one and other systems). gives you the flexibility to use RAW if you need to
JPEGs can be very beautiful! I suspect the reason you prefer JPEGs over RAWs is because the results in Lightroom actually look better than RAWs. Lightroom is known for not developing Fuji RAWs as good as possible. My Fuji RAWs had color noise and artifacts with Lightroom. When I saw that Capture One could also develop Fuji RAWs, I installed a trial version and the demosaicing was flawless. The results I can get with Capture One compared to Lightroom are much better and I have the full potential of the RAWs. It took some time to learn Capture One but it was worth it. My Fujifilm cameras record 14 or 16 bits per color channel in RAW, at 16 bits that's 32,768 color gradations per color channel. A JPEG has only 256 color gradations per color channel, this limits the development very much. The same development of a RAW yields much better results, especially if the RAW has errors like wrong white balance. Therefore, I edit my photos in RAW as a matter of principle, because I can access much more information for the development, then the application of presets and color changes is really fun, afterwards the output is JPEG or TIFF.
Ay man pure supporter here just tappin in...Yo, I truly fuck how you be in da fields solo dolo widdit with nothing but yourself, ya strap and your passion! 💎 love from the suburbs of Chicago.

Have you tried shooting on actual film? I have digital cameras but the fun I get from shooting a real vintage film camera is immeasurable. I'd totally recommend giving it a shot! You'll get around 32 shots on a regular 35mm roll and you have no idea how they look until you develop them. I love it.

Why y’all think there’s a difference? I have my thoughts but maybe it should be a podcast episode... if y’all picking up what I’m putting down
I find it works best subtle. Pull down the white point a little to get those creamy highlights. Pop the mids up a little to brighten skin. I like to shoot with my white balance shifted a point towards red already, so a little tint of blue or green in the shadows can work with some underexposed shots. ✌️

I agree. Although I do shoot RAW. You shoot what works for you.

Nice, I edit both. Most of my film is scanned into .jpeg and if that's in need well then...
I started editing jpegs once I started shooting Sony 😄
I exclusively edit Jpegs
Why the preference for editing JPEGS vs. PNG? Isn't PNG a high quality image? I comprehend that RAW may force you to do far more work than necessary.
