I can suggest an experiment but it depends on the capacity of the power supply. You have the two speakers wired in series. Add a flatbed car and put two more of these speakers also in series in series on top, facing upward just like the others. You can run wires with a connector underneath, passing the coupling to connect to the tender power supply - the connection would be in parallel to the speakers you've installed already (you can cover them on the flatbed with an open-weave cloth to simulate a tarp). The reason - base frequencies have very long wavelengths, which makes reproducing them so difficult. Size matters: an 18" woofer does a lot better than a 3" speaker with base reproduction. So here, you'd be mimicking a speaker that is at least twice as large as the two you've already installed. The fact that they are separated from car to car doesn't matter because they would still be in phase for long wavelength reproduction. The speakers do have to be in phase with one another (if not they cancel one another when heard from a distance) but if you wire them oriented in the exact same way as what you have now you should be ok. What to expect is louder sound, of course, but more importantly a noticeable improvement in the base.
About one year ago I modified one of these Bachaman's Shays. I installed a Locksound Mini V4 sound decoder, a 20 x 40 mm speaker (I had to make a custom enclosure for it and some holes at the bottom for better sound purposes) all into the rear tender. I also changed the bulbs for led lights (the resistor for the rear light was also into the rear tender). and I installed also a fire-effect led in the firebox. Current pickups were also improved. I tried to change the bevel gears for those from NWSL but placing the bevels into the axles is not easy. I'll do a second try one day. For me the sugar cube speakers sound a bit "peaked" sometimes so I preferred to use a bigger conventional speaker. It was worthy all that effort. The engine sounds terriffic!
I would also think about buying new gears from NWSL I'm not sure i if that is the right name of the company. But they offer replacement gears which are metal I'm sure you already know all this but... Great video by the way.👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
Great video! As a note we still do have Econami decoders - some of the decoders in the line were discontinued but not all of them. Learn more: soundtraxx.com/products/econami-digital-sound-decoders
I would turn down the clanking rails just a little to really hear the chuff. It kinda is the pits that there's no actual shay chuffs. My goodness I learned something new. I did not know they offered a Shay locomotive.
What a difference !
Thank You for the sound video. I'm a big fan of "sugar" cube speakers in HO Scale models. Cheers. ~ Boomer.

That's correct. I just bought a set a few weeks ago. Saved my Shay from the scrapper.
For split gears now, get the bevel gears from North West Short Line. Those gears are steel and will not split.

Good info, I'm about to do this in my own Shay locomotive. What are the plugs for the speaker wires? Where did you find them?
They’re were just simple pin connector plugs
Wonderfull steam loco and sound. Sorry, gently do you have a refernce number for this 80 Ton ?
Like a Bachmann product number?
@@FJX2000_Productions Yes, i try to search a model to overhaul ( or, gently, a oldest catalog).
Did you keep the firebox LED or was it removed?
I kept the firebox light and it still works!
Did you seal those speakers in? around the sides of their enclosures as they recommend?
I cannot remember if I did for sure but I believe I did just so they wouldn't fall apart
Do you have the part number for the Bachman replacement gears?
