I played Mario Kart 8 around a month ago, I was surprised that you could still find a full lobby. I still play Super Mario Maker, and I've homebrewed my Wii U so I can still play it after the servers are down.
This is why I despise Nintendo. They had more than plenty of opportunity to keep all their servers and sites going unlike Xbox and PS. So I guess in 10 years or so we will have it switch games go obsolete!
Unfortunately for Switch users, Nintendo upped their hardware and software security on the platform, so a huge chunk of Switches are flat-out uncrackable. Thankfully, cartidge-based pirated games would work without any risks if Nintendo ditched their servers... but at what cost...
This saddens me to the core as I planned to do one last play though of my Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games and the older Pokemon games that used to have online function. But due to a major technical screw up on both my 3DS's causing me to lose 3 digital games and than a loss in my family I haven't been able to pursue my gaming goals of 2023. Was able to recover 2 of the digital games but had to buy a physical copy of Story of Seasons: trio of Towns because the 3DS Cloud Saves don't support certain games which is so odd.. The game is still wrapped in its box unopened & I'm not sure when I will be able to get back to that since the original plans all went south. As for some of you may be going through life altering events or may be struggling lately you are not alone and I see you!
Been playing the original Splatoon online this past week just to enjoy it a bit more online. I have Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch, so I'm good there. Shut downs like this makes me wish online games were like the old days. On PC, I could play older online games, like Quake III Arena for example, because players were able to host their games. Just host a game, and have players join via IP address. It was a feature of the game too.
Xenoblade Chronicles X. I even got the special in-game achievements taken down years ago. So I attempted to move forward, focusing on the online only achievements. I learned a lot. I got very far, but there's this odd section with Nemesis type achievements. To have a prayer, I had to beat the story to get better mechs. If I tried this a few years ago, I'd have no problem. But I got to the final bosses, realized I still needed to level up skills, something. I only had about two months to go. But I had a life, and a job to also deal with. I literally put the Wii U in a box. I wish I started a year ago, but it also made me realize how much I dislike online gaming. If it's online only, I don't care anymore. If the battery still works, I can still beat the game. But honestly, again, I'm more likely to just play the original at best. So, it sucks. But it has led me to make my own choices and to ignore what the industry wants me to do. It wants me to play newer games, I'm likely to do the opposite. And offline.
They are NOT CANCELLED AT ALL!!! Are you crazy?! They’ll keep going but with a different network brand called Pretendo, the online networks for both are still a thing!
