I want to thank you, I just had this surgery and I was quite confused on how it works, This was more informative than anything my surgeon explained, thanks again
You do not have to push for the stool to come out the stoma; you dont really feel it either (so Im told). You wear a little plastic pouch that fits over the stoma, and the stool comes out into the bag. You change the bag when necessary. I'm sure this may sound odd....but it meant having this surgery to save your life it would be worth it...don't you think?
The end portion of bowel (now connected only to the rectum) may be removed, or sutured closed and left in the abdomen. In the future this allows reconnection or "takedown" if wanted. If the rectal portion of the remaining colon is left in place it's called the "Hartman's pouch." The Hartman's pouch should remain viable and may produce mucous which will be expelled from the rectum. Question: If a person with a colostomy and Hartman's pouch needed a suppository, where would it be inserted?
I apologize for my late reply to your answer. The rectum is a highly vascular area of the colon that is best suited for the suppository insertion. Now in saying this...you must know the Hartman's pouch is adequate size to accept the suppository before you insert it.
You are welcome;) I wish your family member well. If you or any other family member has a question, I will be glad to help. Thanks again for the comment.
@Daveyslingshot My sister used to date a guy who had a colostomy. I never would have know if somebody hadn't told me. As far as I know, it never presented any problems for him. He had absolutely no physical limitations that I know of, and he was about as far from paranoid as you can get. I don't know if he LIKED it, but I'm sure he was a lot happier pooping into a bag than dying an excruciating death from Crohn's Disease.
yea, but it would be pretty embarrasing when it comes 2 being with someone else(if u kno wat i mean), but if it meant either die or live with it, I'll live..so how would u kno when its coming out, do u feel it then?
hey glad you corrected that guy but what about relieving yourself of gas (farting) and no i'm not joking. Also can a person know when they had a stool i assume the weight of the poop weighs down the bag so they know?
I showed this video to my Care Aide students. They found it very helpful to help them to understand colostomies. Thanks.

Best explanation I have found. The apron really helps you understand things better.
Thank you, I have a family member having this operation and it good to be able to understand what will happen insted of having to ask questions

Great! a very simple, elegant and non-frightening expalanation

@spencehj It can be either permanent or temporary depending on why the surgery was done.
