Knowing Strive Masiyiwa and his significant contributions to Zimbabwe as an engineer during my formative years greatly influenced my decision to pursue a degree in Telecommunications Engineering. I can confidently attest that his inspirational journey has provided me with strong motivation throughout my academic endeavors.

Strive is undoubtedly the most brilliant entrepreneur to emerge from Zimbabwe, but on AI, he was out of depth, yet that is the strength of James Manyika and Google are some of the pioneers of AI.

Thank you Strive for pointing out that Africa needs to be part of the conversation. Africa has a lot of potential and we need more leaders like him who are dedicated to lay out the foundation necessary for future generations to build on. AI will be a massive technological revolution and Africa cannot afford to be left out, again!
Definitely Africa needs to be brought into the conversation not just as a user but also in terms of reaping the benefits economically.

Strive's reserved take on open source made me smile, it reflects his strong belief in the ethics of AI. If AI systems are responsibly developed, with fairness, transparency and accountability, we'll be fine. I'm glad this conversation is actually taking place on Google.

This was quite impressive. I am a proud Zimbabwean and I am excited about the effects AI will have in Africa and the world at large. I am also happy that this conversation showed how important it is to talk about the digital future for today's generation and the generations to come.
Thumbs up to Strive and James! It's refreshing to hear a serious discourse concerning a searching matter of technical and social importance for a change. I think the lack of definition of AI speaks to its current infancy and spontaneity. The world must now find full use for it and evaluate its potential immediate and long term impact now that it's here, rather than AI being a solution deliberately created for a predetermined range of specific known problems. In other words, it's a nice tool which we now need to figure out how to fully use it; not one made for a specific purpose. Hence Google's initiative of setting up research centres in countries like Ghana. Awesome dialogue gentlemen and thank you.

Personally i would suggest big guys like you follow suit on what is being done by automobile companies, introduce apprenticeship on AI, Telecommunications etc which will make the learning and teaching of sciences more pragmatic so as to give tangible results. One thing that's certain through all of this is - Africa as a sleeping giant is waking up and quite excitingly with this realization,there's a hope for amazing potential that'll come from it.

Question is what is going to happen to Telecommunications Licenses and Telecos as a whole once Starlink (Vsats) is used as a Fibre Backhuals for 3,4 and 5G Cellsites, I understand this is still considered Rural Community Technology. But 4G Starlink backhuals vs 5G Fibre Backhuals....Are Telecos going decentralized
This coupled with Netflix ,Prime viewers on Africa's pay-TV satellites Startimes/Multichoice/Gotv users who don't mind paying USD$26,66 cause of lack of Internet and stable 4G connections that would allow direct Netflix @ USD$8,53. Or even PayTV Priemium subscriptions without internet. And all this will now be possible via Starlink or One web ( Just to avoid monopoly narratives)

Mind blowing, breathtaking conversation. Like King Saul, I feel like asking "whose sons are these?" Something I have admired about Strive Masiyiwa is that while he is a capitalist, his version is not the type that excludes or uses everyone else. Strive speaks about "all of us, we, everyone of us...." That's the difference between him and most of the political "entrepreneurs" that we have in Africa.
Zimbabwe has brilliant minds especially in technology.

Econet standards have dropped, the guys who are running it are sleeping on the job,and the waiting time when you call the customer service number is absurd, I wouldn't expect that to happen in a company founded by the tech entrepreneur, and pioneer of mobile phone service in Africa Dr Strive . We are not set up to be producers of AI technology. We are consumers at this point. We need to start managing and governing our data and digital infrastructure.

@@jinmi7832 I have no idea what you are talking about sir. I know data governance structure is universal. It has nothing to do with Western or African. Data insights and analytics are based on the region it is designed for. Yes, I am in the position of authority for Data governance. I have worked with teams in the USA and Africa for big oil companies. One thing we in Africa are lacking is the governance structure. That was my initial comment.
@@jinmi7832 Boss, I usually don't go back and forth in the comment section because of this reason. You really don't understand how Artificial intelligence works. AI technologies are fueled by data. Data in, data out. If you build (Produce) all the technologies for farmers you will still need data for your predictive analytics. Creating the AI technologies is not a big deal. Getting good data to run the technology takes time. If Africa does not have good data governance, we will be at the mercy of foreign entities and anyone can come and mishandle our data. Entities that own data rule the economy.
