Retro Thrifting Vlog & Haul // Hunting for Vintage in the Wild!

- I tried my best to bring you all along on a day of thrifting and antique shopping, and it went, okay? It is hard to hunt out thrift finds and vintage goodies while remembering to film too all while in a very crowded thrift shop. I'll try again I promise! Of course I included my usual style of haul of the day's finds at the end too!
The porcelain containers with holes in the lids are hair receivers! Ladies would collect their shed hair, or take it off their combs/brushes, to save and then make pads from their own hair to use in big gibson girls styles and for hair jewelry/crafts as well.

Thank you for watching!
Hair savers. 😃
Indeed! :)
I refer to my local thrift store as “The place polyester goes to die. “
Karen Malay, exactly! 😆🤣😝🙃
Same!
OH! Vintage Goth Mother has uploaded *click, clicky, click* I'm digging the Rachel Maksy vibes for the day out thrifting, living your best Hobbit life! Thank you for being so considerate about your lipstick for trying on clothes, I wish others would follow suit. BINGE Peaky Blinders, it is soooo good, and I love how it's clearly influencing your wardrobe.
Thank you! I need to binge Peaky I know, perhaps over the holidays as I'm over-scheduling myself big time just now opps!
This time of year always makes me feel mentally drained so you have my sympathy. Thanks for cheering me up ❤️
Happy to be of any help!
MEASURING TAPE! such a simple tip, but it would make all the difference! definitely doing that from now on!
this was fun! it's nice to know that even tho you always find such gems, it's still touch and go. Inspires me to keep trolling local thrift stores.
Thank you! Yeah there are days and stores that are just a total miss sometimes, but by the next week the stock is new again and the hunt begins again ;)
I think this is the first time I’ve seen you out of the house. Haha. I like it. You look well in the light.
Ha thank you! I do leave the house...on rare occasions ;)
To save on dry cleaning! Not only do wrinkles get removed, but in theory steaming also sanitizes thrift store finds. So far It's worked great.
I love the multicolored specks in the brown tweed pants. SO lovely! I once had a pair of socks with specks like that; I wore them to death!
Thank you for taking us thrifting with you! I love it! Hugs!
Thank you Peggy! Hugs right back at you!
I really enjoyed this new vlogging style you’re trying out! Looking forward to seeing more :)
Thank you!
You’re probably glad you went thrift shopping 🛍 when you did because then we had to shut down this is something fun about thrift in finding a good deal
super love for the yellow plaid skirt wow really a great one
I have to thrift vicariously through you because five minutes in an actual thrift store is enough to send my immune system into a frenzy. So much sneezing, wheezing and eye-watering, it's nasty. I want the grey pants.
Aw bummer! I'm lucky to be able to withstand the war zone that is thrifting ;)
Just finished binge watching Miss Fischer's Murder Mysteries 🖤 amazing 1920's style inspo 🖤
Yes Phryne has excellent style indeed!
Thank you always for helping me adventure
Always!
They're hair receivers of course!
I've been to many antique stores around the country, and it's funny how regional they are - the large taxidermy and guns really say you're in the west haha.
Indeed! And yep, Colorado, wild west all the way ha!
That Peaky Blinders blouse looks BEAUTIFUL on you.
Thank you!
Thank you for saying that about the lipstick, nothing worse then spotting a treasure only to find the scarlett stain. Also, because I'm a nerd, $48 in late 80's with inflation today is about $100, great score!
Thank you Amy! A bargain indeed :)
As always, you chose some remarkable items. FYI, Evan Picone was definitely a higher quality brand back in the '80s, and Orvis is comparable to L.L. Bean. Cheers, Ardith
Thank you Ardith!
I like that coat at the end. Good find.
Thank you!
I'm obsessed with the floral 80s skirts. I have a whole collection, so I'm SUPER jealous about your finds! They're GORGEOUS!
Thank you Suzie! I have quite a few now too...they're so good though!
I collect bed room furniture like the one you showed in the antique mall. My parents had one, as did one of my aunts. I have two full sets now and am still looking! I wonder if those short sleeve blouses can be restyled by adding a puff bottom, ex. A quarter inch elastic placed about an inch up from the hem. I think they might not look as masculine. I have been on a cruise for the past week, with no internet. I have missed watching your channel. Feels like I have been separated from a friend! Enjoyed this video. I kept saying, check out that lace blouse, and I love that light green dresser thing! Great fun.
Thank you Shirley!
Hair receivers! Carpet padding Tweed!!!😂
Those painted porcelain jars are hair keepers. Clean your brush and stuff it in that pretty jar. No I'm not kidding.
Indeed you are correct!
Hair saver. I have a silver and cut glass piece past down from family.
Great finds as usual. The quality and variety is fantastic. I'm shooting over to IG to ask a question!
Thanks Janae!
That was lots of fun!! Thanks for sharing. Lovely skirt collection.🎀🎀🍮🌍
Thank you!
I don’t know why I’m surprised your car isn’t vintage, but I am!
fyi: Read about Charles Evans (co-founder of Evan Picone) on Wikipedia. Same with Orvis. Interesting history.
I'll have to check it out!
7:20 pot-pourri ?
(I love the mulberry coat; very elegant !!)
Thank you! They are hair receivers oddly enough, for a ladies dressing table to store the hair that gets stuck in one's brush to use later, a very old fashioned concept indeed!
@@TheClosetHistorian Ohh, so they can make hair rats !!
i searched etsy for plus size vintage clothing. yeah........ i remember how horribly my mom had to dress in the 80s because of lack of fashion and style for plus size. i also saw people listing XL as plus (its not) and "vintage" made to order clothing items.
Koret was an expensive brand. As a matter of fact I think my mom own that skirt.
I have only found one pair of high waisted wool pants, and they turned out to be full of moth holes. I guess this area just doesn't get those in thrift stores.
Bummer! Thrifting is always an adventure!
Which antique mall did you go to? I live in the Denver-Greeley area and I'm always looking for new haunts!
This one is called the Colorado Antique Gallery on Broadway! :)
@@TheClosetHistorian Way cool! I'll have to check it out. Thank you! :)
Where can one watch Peaky Blinders?
I believe its on Netflix (at least in the US) currently!
All I want to do is have a thrifting holiday in the US 😭😭😭
It's not a bad plan really, the flights would be the most expensive part! Well, that and the whole renting a car thing, public transportation here is not the same eek!
@@TheClosetHistorian definitely on the bucket list! First stop would be an Arc for sure 😊
Evan picone is a very famous designer. Love his clothes. Pricey but timeless
Women used to save the loose hair from their brushes to use to wrap around the end of braids(pre-rubberbands) and to use making "rats" to add fullness to their hair. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you Dianne! A hair receiver is indeed correct, I have one but I use it for keeping a stash of medications in my bedroom instead ;)
@@TheClosetHistorian Hair "Rats" shudder hahahahahha I have a phobia of rodents but have started saving my Hair from brush , so I need one of those x
Joining you “in the wild” was great fun! Let’s do it again.
+
Thank you Alison!
I remember Evan Piccone from the 1980’s and 90’s! It’s def a good vintage brand...irk if they make it anymore either!
Lucky Sweetheart Vintage yes Evan Piccone was an 80s brand that I remember. In the early 80s I worked in B Altman & Co - a higher end department store that’s now gone. Evan Piccone was carried in their Better Jrs department. Very good quality fabrics and most always lined garments.
OK I had to stop and laugh with you at, "I don't know why ARC thinks that blouses are a Seasonal Item!" Yeah. I had a lady at the thrift store tell me today that no one buys sleeveless tops in Winter. In LA. As I was looking at tank tops. Also I had a lady look me up and down, smirk and chortle at me as she declared that my outfit was all perfectly coordinated. (it was, it was thrifted for $4, total) … she was in sweats. She was being mean. Ha! People are crazy! If I had bangs, they would have been super messed up when I was done thrifting.
Oh man! To think for some people, "you look so coordinated" _isn't_ a compliment? That is, like, my most received nice-thing-that-strangers-say!
Matchy matchy is just sooo old fashioned, well good, excellent then I say, old fashioned is what I'm after (well, with clothes) ;) Stay coordinated!
Omg I love seeing you out in the world in your car!!! I feel like we are on a field trip!
Thanks! I sometimes vlog in the wild in my Side Husslen videos too on occasion ;)
I've been thrifting since I was a teenager in the 1980's, and I still love it. You and some other RUclipsrs have inspired me to add a few 1930's & 40's inspired pieces to my wardrobe via thrifting and altering. I'm even going to knit a 1940's sweater soon (my sewing skills are meager, but I can do the knit thing). Keep up the good work! Thanks!
That Koret skirt! I said, "ooh that's pretty." Koret is the one vintage brand that I own the most of in my wardrobe. Love it. And love this video!
Thank you Victoria!
The wilder my bangs are, the harder the time I'm having.
Nothing says the wildest times of all are afoot better than going from no bangs to getting them cut though...or cutting them in yourself!
sometimes at the thrift I find myself thinking ... is there anything left in this world that isnt a sweater??!
I love thrifting! I shop not just for things that fit, but for fabric. You can find a lot of gorgeous fabric in dresses and curtains.
Thrifting is a most excellent hobby truly :)
That yellow plaid is the Loud MacLeod Tartan aka MacLeod of Lewis
Is the cheaper price with or without shipping? And although I haven't found vintage furs in my size, I have been pondering the statement they make against ensuring the animals' sacrifice is valued as long as possible. If they were killed to be worn, shouldn't they be used? I would never consider new furs, of course. It's barbaric. A quandary I'll never have to resolve since first are hard to find around here and rarely in larger sizes.
With shipping, as shipping for jewelry isn't usually much and the jewelry at the vintage shops/antique malls here always tends to be $50+ when I can get things for say $25 online ;) The best thing for real vintage furs seems to be charities like coats for cubs where pelts are used for helping healing and baby animals who don't have real mothers to snuggle up to. Its hard to say what exactly should be done with all of the hundreds of vintage fur coats already out there in the world, should they be worn or not? I do wear vintage leather, and felt hats, wool etc because I'd rather things get used yes, but I would never buy new snakeskin bags or fur products, and I no longer wear vintage furs unless they are faux (I have many faux fur collars for example and a huge faux fur coat from the 80's) though I have in the past.
Love that plaid skirt. I’m had one just like that in high school.
Evan Picon, Pendleton Wools, took me back to my 80’s retail years! Love the skirts. Everything looked so good on you!!
Thank you Mina!
It's kind of strangely out of place to see you driving a modern car. If you could drive a vintage car, what would you drive?
A 1930's Pontiac perhaps, if they could make it self driving and electric inside. I love the look of 1930's cars the best I think, though a 1950's chrome and two tone something finned also would be very nice indeed. I'm not very good at parking my car as it is though, I'd be a real disaster in a vintage car!
See if you have a St Vincent de Paul thrift store in your area. They are wonderful shops! also found a web site called gem.app that is all vintage. Cool site!
It seems they are all on the East cost so maybe someday! We don't have many thrift shop chains here in Colorado!

St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store

Denver, Colorado 80220. Maybe this will be close?
@@jewlsseven1 random! I just googled it and they showed nothing, clearly I must have had a typo!
@@TheClosetHistorian oh no! Maybe it has closed down.
I love hair receivers! I am eternally looking for a complete vanity set that includes one.
Please consider doing a Peaky Blinders lookbook! I'm having withdrawals after finishing this last season and have been attempting to dress like a Shelby lol
Perhaps one day when I finish it!
I liked this video! I wish the UK had the same thrift shop quality the US does :C
Thank you! The UK may be lacking in the thrift shopping arena, but you do have National Trust properties which I wish I had, so each place has it's exclusive niceties ;)
@@TheClosetHistorian National Trust properties are very much lacking in Super Nintendo games tho
That yellow Pendleton skirt!! I literally just thrifted the exact blue version of it in my latest haul and my first thought was Ravenclaw haha 😂
Funnier still as the same stall had a blue one too, but I left it behind as I couldn't afford to snatch up both ha!
Omg im sooooo early I love your channel your so creative keep up the good job your so inspiring.... warm hugs from Florida
Thank you Nia! Warm hugs right back!
I love all those hair catchers you showed! I have 3 hair catchers from my great grandmothers in my collection of vintage things. Thanks for taking us shopping it was a lot of fun! I wish our thrift shops had the type of stuff you have. They are mostly jeans and t-shirts, and children's clothing. I have a vanity almost identical to the one in your video and I love it.
Thank you Jennifer! I'd love to have a vintage vanity someday :)
Loved Evan Picone! More of a 80-90's label and good quality.
Flabbergasted at the size of those shops! Are they run by charities like here in England?? Can honestly say I've never seen anything like it. Loved that plaid skirt and the coat is very nice.
Thank you Lynne! The thrift shops I go to are run by a charity yes, but the giant antique malls here are usually run on a consignment-ish system where individual dealers rent a space/booth/section to display their stuff but then there is a centralized staff and check out area. I never saw a giant charity shop while I was in the UK, but to be fair I spent 90% of my time in London!
Is the (non-existent) prize winning item a reticule? Used for collecting the hair from one's brush, which would then be made into a hairpiece?
My alternative guess is container for holding hairpins.
A hair receiver indeed!
Yess patient, hydrated, went to the bathroom 🚽 pee! Ha
Also I like to wear a tank top, and leggings so I can throw things over. Because now there’s no fitting rooms!! The gal at ARC value village said last week they don’t have the staff to “clean” every time someone leaves.
Hey, I need that hair saver. Thought I was only weirdy that saves my hair to track breakage and shedding. 🙂
I have been on a wool search for months now without any luck. I am plus size so chances drop. The yellow was a great fined. And Looks great on you. I would have payed even more than 20 and still considered it a bargain.
Thank you Robina! Same here, I'd pay up to 50 for a Pendleton skirt no problem, but don't tell anyone shhh...
Thought the pots might be for hat pins, but they're the wrong shape for that. Huh, never would have guessed what they're actually for. Love the dead stock skirt
Thank you Jess!
I suspect the $48 Koret skirt was part of a two piece outfit. The top might have been a matching cardigan - knit and floral appliqués. I remember those outfits well!
Good to know, sounds cute to me!
$28, geesh! really dislike when they over price things, so awful!
This was a fun field trip.
I love browsing antique malls. They're so much fun.
Great haul! ❤️ (No surprise there.)
P.S. Evan Picone is a very, very good brand from the 80s.
Thank you Darnelle!
hair storage, after brushing you put the hair inside.
Correct! :)
I can't believe I never thought of bringing a tape measure with me. That's such a good idea!
who's watching in 2021 going "oh yeah, that's what shopping was like"?
Does it indicate a certain Covid inflicted deficit in my life that I'm watching these thrift hauls again?
Hair savers, have my grandmother's vanity set from the 1900's.
You can still find Evan Picone at JC Penney & Amazon. Although the quality is not the same as it was back in the 80s & 90s.
Quality so rarely is anymore! That's part of what I love about thrifting, the clothes are genuinely nicer!
Tips no lipstick 💄 💋 no foundation and my guiding tea 🍵
You made me laugh. "Merica!" very amusing.
Oh that was fun! If I'm not thrifting, Im watching thrifting! My bangs tell the story.....Hilarious!!!! Wish I lived near you, that is my favorite kind of day!!!! No red lipstick on thrifting days? LOL! I look homeless when I thrift. you look great!
Ha thank you Brenda! :)
I could get lost in that Antiques mall. Fun video!!
Your lovely coat is probably 1974/76. I had one just like it in a more rust shade. Early to mid 80's wool coats were more cocoon like in style.
Thank you! This is actually one of the smaller of the antique malls I know of nearby too ;) There are some really giant ones here, but they tend to be full of a LOT of junk eek!
I still live with my family so I obviously don't have my own home either. Buuuuut that’s never stopped me from obsessively squirreling away vintage breakable shinies in precarious piles all over my room. Who needs desk space when you have 48 antique butter pats? Certainly not me. I have zero regrets and you can pry my Hazel Atlas atomic starburst juice carafe set from my cold, dead hands.
I would have a very hard time passing up an atomic carafe set indeed. I do have a set of pressed glass desert plates, well 5 of them...but that is only really because I knocked one off the shelf one time and had to buy the set since I'd broken the sixth! It's lucky they are light green and quite pretty :)
Love the plaid yellow skirt. Once again you got some fab items. Those two-tone shoes are great.
Thank you Pamela!
Do you ever watch LGR's thrift shop videos? No fashion, really, he mostly looks for old technology... but if you like thrifting as a discovery/therapeutic act you might enjoy.
I have never heard of it so I'll have to check them out!
I love that coat. I found a beautiful 1980s circa full length black wool coat in my size ( plus size, 6x actually) on Ebay. The lining was ripped. I took it to a tailor and had it lined in red! Though I rarely wear it as I am in California. Its stunning.
Thanks Mai! Sounds fabulous, even better to get a color put in like that
I wish I could dress like peaky blinders too. Love that 1920's look and Cillian Murphy. I've watched the whole series so far, it's great.
I need to binge the rest! I got a bit miffed between seasons 2 and 3 because it feels like they skip too much in between seasons! I feel like I have to get to know everyone all over again grrr...
The brown Orvis pants are incredible. Orvis brand usually has a Peeky Blinders vive. The yellow plaid skirt is very cute too and may be from the 70s.I remember that plaid from school then.
Thank you! Blinders style, without the crime of course, is such a vibe
I adore the yellow and black plaid skirt. I think that particular pattern is called the "Loud MacLeod" tartan (because of the pleats I couldn't see the pattern fully to confirm). My alma mater used that tartan for... well, everything.
I don't know if I would like it as much on everything ha! Curtains for example might be a tad overwhelming ;)
Would you do a video how you organize your scarves, hats, hair flowers 🌺 I need so much inspiration for organizing my vintage goods!!!
I show how I store everything in my closet tour video over here if you would like to see
Hair Receiver, I believe. After brushing your hair, you would put any stray strands in the jar which would then be used for making craft projects. I work at a museum and on display we have a watch chain made out of hair.
Indeed!
Would love to go shopping with you!!! ♥️♥️♥️
I really enjoyed this kind of vlog doll!
Strolling around thrift stores with you is super cool looking at all the goodies 😍
Great finds too, perfect skirts & I have coat envy!😘xx
Thank you Jo!
One request... darker clothes disappear in front of the dark background. Could you have an alternate backdrop to show off these darker items? Your style and statement ring so true!_
Thank you! The darker background here was painted for my Gryffindor lookbook video, so it will be a new color yet again soon!
I like your picks. I love to go vintaging myself. It seems that you have lost weight and your picks look more fitted which.makes them look great😎
Thank you Evelyn!
You are looking very fit and trim and fantastic in all your finds! I learned something new today..hair receptors??
Thank you! Hair receptors/receivers indeed!
I really enjoy these thrift store hauls you do. Kindly do a video on how to clean and care for thrifted items, specifically wool coats. How do you clean them and get that moth ball smell out ?
Thank you! I'm afraid I'm no expert and I just take coats to the dry cleaners 😅
Thrift shopping two days ago to buy long sleeve blouses. First time for me doing that. You inspire me to go shop. There was a knit shirt that still has the lady perfume on it.😒
It's always an adventure out there in thrifting land!
My favorite shops are thrift shops and antique malls. Never know what you are going to find.
Indeed!
Fabulous as always, keen eyed and rocking every single look. I've also been having a difficult brain WHILE so this was a much needed and appreciated bit of escapism. Thank you! Much enjoyed x
Thank you!
Please do more of these!!! I’m obsessed!! 😍🖤
Great video! Nice to see your day out . That thrift store is huge. I always feel a bit overwhelmed when there is so many bits of jewellery to look at.
Thank you! The jewelry cases there are a bit overwhelming indeed! I don't buy a lot of rhinestone jewelry anymore though (I dont wear the stuff I have enough as it is!), so I usually zero in on what isn't sparkling funny enough ;)
Question... Where do you get your hangers? They look like nice dark wooden ones of good quality.
Thanks! Funny enough they are from Ikea, well the black ones are, the pant hanger ones I found on Amazon
www.amazon.com/LOHAS-Home-Walnut-Hangers-Anti-rust/dp/B00M2GAZKA/ref=pd_sbs_201_4/139-9304440-3237405?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00M2GAZKA&pd_rd_r=95c6eb16-a16e-4545-b195-11699ec52aa6&pd_rd_w=fjFNf&pd_rd_wg=udft8&pf_rd_p=5873ae95-9063-4a23-9b7e-eafa738c2269&pf_rd_r=JMDKPB2KXB3T3C6KW5JZ&psc=1&refRID=JMDKPB2KXB3T3C6KW5JZ
Hair gleaned from hair brush , then balled up and formed into hair height pieces ( does that make since )!
Indeed you are correct!
