      ***** I have done something important, even though the outcome is very uncertain for me. I have applied for Sabbatical Leave from my university so that I can do some serious research....Beyond this, I celebrated a milestone birthday last month even though the creative engagement and the cost of doing so were almost prohibitive. My guests are singing my praises even now and I continue to receive gifts over a month later. At the time I had to tell myself that I had the rest of my life to regret not doing it even though the risk of doing it now was genuinely great. Happily for me, I paid off my last $75,000.00 to the caterer yesterday.

    - "Think on first principles, not by analogy"

    • @xBrOwNeDoG
      @xBrOwNeDoG 8 лет назад +10

      explain this please

    • @Popopatop
      @Popopatop 7 лет назад +55

      xBrOwNeDoG I've heard him explain it as you gather and determine the fundamental truths of whatever it is you're dealing with, then reason up from that. For example when space X was first coming together and making plans for their first rocket, they didn't just sit down and say okay well rockets usually cost this much or they've always been done this way (analogy), instead they sat down and figured out what the essentials were for building a rocket and went about doing so in their own way which actually ended up costing around 2% of what everyone else was building rockets for prior to that point. That is first principle thinking. So badass. Im pretty sure its taught in physics but really applies to any aspect of anyone's life.

    • @imaweerascal
      @imaweerascal 7 лет назад +23

      My take on it is that, instead of looking at existing products and solutions, and trying to improve on them, you look at the fundamentals of what problem they're trying to solve. And then try to solve the underlying problem. That makes it easier to come up with totally new solutions that no one has thought of.

    • @jdlitson
      @jdlitson 7 лет назад

      Well yes, but 2% is the material cost only. Still need to design and build which is going to add much more to that "2%"

    Elon Musk represents the prototype for the new model of American businessman in the 21st Century with his relentless focus on innovation, just as much as Henry Ford represented the new model of American businessman in the 20th Century, by making his business not merely profit driven, but consumer driven with a focus on strengthening the American family, so that they had not only more money to make purchases, but made for happier and more productive workers as well.

      Mikko Finell "During the planning stages of Iron Man, after Downey Jr. had been cast, director Jon Favreau and Downey Jr. sat down to discuss how to make a really believable Tony Stark character that the audience could connect with. Downey Jr. suggested that the best way to do that was to go and sit down with Elon Musk, a sort of real life Tony Stark, and observe his various mannerisms, as well as pick his brain on the subject."... oh and Musk was also asked to be IN Ironman ;)

    Something i believe every successful man and woman have in common which was not mentioned in this video is that they all read, a lot. Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Elon Musk etc always have been and always will be avid readers; this is important for a variety of reasons but the main point being which Charlie Munger brought up is the fact that by consuming knowledge every single day you will slowly but surely be ahead of your competitors who stopped learning other than that of there specific field, ultimately this leads to them being inefficient and unproductive by not being able to identify where the world is going, how the world works and more.

      +CyanideShock Agreed. And I would add the capacity and desire to work. I'm not saying you have to work 70 hours a week all the time, but every entrepreneur goes through at least one period, usually at startup, in which they have to work hard and a lot. There is no substitute.

    • @CyanideShock

      I see the Tesla cars the same way we saw the first iPhone or iPad. They were the first great products of their categories (at the time). Not new, but the first great versions.
      I realize Apple products are nowhere near as good as they use to be. I believe that decline comes from turning over the decision making from the engineers to the sales people. I hope it will not happen to Tesla.

      The real measure of Elon's success with Tesla is how the other car manufacturers are reacting.
      I have literally had dozens of xenophobic, overly-patriotic German RUclips viewers send me messages about how:
      _'Teslas are the worst cars in the world, they will never beat Mercedes-Benz/BMW/Audi.'_
      Clearly, Tesla is making waves and some are able to ride with them, whilst others get dragged underwater...

    • @MikaelMurstam
      @MikaelMurstam 9 лет назад +30

      Flawless Pants I think the problem is that he is not a linear thinker. A lot of thoughts interrupt themselves and it makes it hard to formulate sentences. You start a sentence and then something else pops up, maybe that you need to correct yourself etc etc..I'm the same way.

    • @dekubaner
      @dekubaner 9 лет назад +4

      Flawless Pants he is not the best public speaker. every time he does presentations is the same. even when announcing the new tesla models. his tone tends to be monotone plus he has that extra mild stutter . and i think the reason is because as a pure bred engineer he is telling you facts. he does attempt to sell you his thoughts, ideas or products based on emotions.

    There are so many smart people in the world but a lot of them play video games or are too lazy to do anything with it. Then there are a lot of dumbasses that have drive and get rich. My brother was the laziest guy coming out of college. Got his CS degree and his wife got him his first job interview. He's making a ton of money now getting 35 thousand dollar bonuses. You gotta have some drive to go with your smarts.

      nhprman It is a bit painful to watch him stumble along in speech. But I believe he's improved over the years. The fact that he just pushes right along is one of the traits I admire about him. I can definitely relate to getting stuck while trying to explain a concept I know so well that the details are buried in my mind. It takes a few seconds to go back there. The desire to communicate with precision can also get in the way. Having to stop and go back a bit to explain something that I know must be clarified.

      Tesla di Murbox I never compared Musk to Iron Man, dumbass. I said Thomas Wayne!
      Iron Man is MCU Batman is DCU - get your fucking comic book universe in order you fucking pleb.
      And George Soros is Emperor Palpatine, not "the Penguin". He's a thousand times more corrupt and encroaching that a lousy 1 city criminal like the penguin.

It can’t be a little bit better because then you put yourself in the shoes of the cunsumer and then say „Why would you buy it?“ You are always gonna buy the trusted brand unless there is a big difference."

    Musk is a genius and I greatly admire him, however, there is one thing he seems to have not mentioned here. Luck! Yes indeed, you need to do all the things he says, but if you don't get lucky, sooner or later, you simply will not make it big. As a friend of mine said, "If you want to get hit by the truck of good fortune, you have to be playing in the highway." But it could miss you altogether.

      Elie Kh I understand your philosophy, and believed strictly that way for a couple of decades. But the universe is not black and white. While unemployed and struggling to survive I met the right guy at the right time in the most unlikely of places and became very "comfortable" for the rest of my life. There is nothing I could have intentionally done to make that happen, but I was in the right place at the right time. So barring supernatural intervention or mysterious subconscious behavioral drivers, I got lucky.

    Elon Musk is special man. Not too many like him. Like Steve Jobs a rare talent as humans. The 10 rules are a good place to start for the average man. However, there's much more than just learning to apply the 10 rules of success. The qualities, standard, the passion, the fire, the creativity, the inspiration, the persistence, the boundless energy, the driving force, the vision and harmony... that these two had is not just the result of learning rules but that connection to the Universal Intelligence is not represented in those rules. I think it has a spiritual dimension that can't be quantified simply by words. Thanks for sharing Evan.

    I have also seen an interview of him. Just saying luck is also a big part. Why isn't is mentioned here? Because that IS also a very big part of his success. He said himself he wouldn't look weird when things will fail. Tesla almost failed many times.
    He said Luck is a big role too. I think bigger than most of the 10 points named here.

      Andy Austin uhm. Darn I need to look up the interview on RUclips to show you. He explained various moments of luck. And he said timing was also very important. Tesla have been going bankrupt with almost a few days away. Then his whole plan was gone. And then there wouldn't be any Tesla car on the road now. I do believe he is a guy with very good insights and knows how the future should look like. But these 10 points are all made up. Some I never even remember saying. U can make the same list for Donald trump or any self made rich man. The list doesn't say anything. Follow this list and let me see where it gets you?

    • @blazex224
      @blazex224 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Many people here are disagreeing with you. There was an interview where he mentions luck. It isn't an outstanding amount of luck, and in fact, most of the luck he faces involves things that has happened during the time he was CEO of one of his companies. The reason it is a fairly important factor- he truly never gives up, and when you give yourself that many chances, luck is inevitable.

    • @eggheadeinstein
      @eggheadeinstein 9 лет назад

      ***** Same reason he did not mention oxygen or the nutrients in the food at the cafeteria at his high school... luck counts a lot.. but you can't count on luck... because it always runs out. Timing is a form of luck, and I've found timing to be the make or break for me in the past, even within months.

    I think he has a very simple but also very effective marketing approach which is make the best possible product and don't bother to advertise. The reasoning behind that is that a very good product will not disappoint the consumer and it will also sell itself. The mistake many companies make is to spend a lot on advertisements to convince consumers to buy their product, maybe even making false statements in those advertisements which will most likely disappoint people and prevent future sales
