AAU teams and these big 7v7 events like OT7 and Elite11 are pay to play and they’re killing both sports cause colleges only recruit from those anymore, rather than actual high schools
Gabriel is absolutely an elite defender, part of the best CB partnership in the world with Saliba at Arsenal. He just hasn't been given a fair chance with the national team yet. Bremer at Juventus is also a very good CB.
I think the main problem is Brazil don't have any elite wingbacks anymore. Whereas before they always had monsters like Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Dani Alves, Marcelo, Maicon etc. bombing down the wings, now they have nobody. Brazil's flying wingbacks have always been as crucial to them as their superstar forwards, until they get a new crop up they'll continue to struggle.
From what I remember Pele only played in one Copa America - it was a league format that year, Brazil and Argentina both unbeaten but Brazil had one more draw. There were a couple other Copas during his playing days but Brazil didn't send their A Team to either of them for some reason.
