How much do you know about the Gwangju uprising & modern history of South Korea?

- Former South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan stood up in front of a flurry of flashing cameras again last Monday. Chun appeared before a district court in the southwestern city of Gwangju, the very place where a pro-democracy uprising against his authoritarian rule took place in May 1980. Monday’s court appearance by the disgraced ex-leader comes in 23 years after he stood in a criminal trial on treason and other charges in 1996. Watching through all this, many South Koreans had a lot of mixed emotions. Do you feel the same way?
#Gwangju #Chun Doo-hwan #Korea
Youth of May brought me here. I wanna know more of "Gwangju Uprising" so I can connect well to the drama..
i recommend watching the movie mr.taxi! its a good intro to understanding the movement and it was mostly pretty accurate
The taxi drive is on Amazon Prime. It a great movie, that’s based on the Gwangju up rising
Same, I'm on episode 6, but I wanted to understand better the history behind the drama
Youth of May also brought me here.
Same lol
Why even take him to court if they were just going to let him get pardoned. Corruptness at its finest. disgusting.
I agree
Without Jurgen Hinzpeter and Kim Sa Bok, the news of the Gwangju Uprising in 1980 would have never been broadcasted over the world.
I watched the movie 'The taxi driver' and was left in tears.. Can't imagine what the people went through for their independence from tyranny.
I lived in Gwangju from 2007-2015. Echoes of May 1980 are everywhere.
I want to thank the whole team that worked in the drama "youth of may". Because of them more and more people are now learning about this time in our history.
But what's terrifying is that this didn't just happen to Korea, this has happened everywhere in almost all countries. While in the kdrama, we saw the perspective of the characters mentioned in drama which was already painful enough, can you imagine, all the people that went through this?
Even more terrifying is that chaos like this is still happening till this day.
Late stage and hyper capitalism that puts profit before all else (especially people), leads to a highly corrupt, militarized and oppressive society.
Chun Doo hwan is a brutal and cruel leader. Sickens me that he was pardoned.
Where is karma for powerful. Karma of God's is only for weak.
전두환 업적 한국 현대사에서 절대 무시 못함 ㅇㅇ

Wow I didn't even know that the scene from Youth of May was actually base in real life this is so sad now I wanted to learn more its history!
한국의 슬픈 역사를 알려주시다니, 감사합니다! Thank you for telling others about S.Korea's sad history!
Youth of may had me researching Korea's history
I'm here because a book i was reading about North Korea off-handedly mentioned that the leader of South Korea in the 1980's was a dictator and I was never aware. So I wanted to learn a bit more about that surprising situation
Just finished watching 'Youth of May' and this made me curiuos about the martial law happened in South Korea.
This is the most important uprising in modern Korean history.
It goes to show that freedom is not not free. South Koreans eventually got the Democracy they've been fighting for, for decades. Paid for with blood, sweat and tears.
I can’t be the only one here from A Taxi Driver
me too
Flipping channels on tv and stumble upon movie "a taxi driver" now I'm researching about the gwangju uprising as I'm watching the movie
Same
I lived in South Korea 14 years after this event and remember learning about it for the first time. It was a shock. I later visited the city. I think what is more shocking is that the truth of those events is still not fully known as well as the U.S. lack of response due to Cold War politics.
The US didn't know about it until it was too late. The Korean president ordered Korean troops
Youth of may brought me here
26 years movie from netflix brought me here
Martial Law has truck both the Philippines and the Republic of Korea during the 70s and the 80s. However, the former has never recovered while the latter has the wings of an eagle. So appalling.
We suffered the propaganda of the Philippine Martial Law for decades. Only now that Filipinos are starting to be enlightened. What we learned from school about Martial Law were all lies. People who make educational videos like this are the true heroes. They put light in the midst of darkness.
he really got no shame.....
1960’s - 1980’s were crazy
turbulent times
This really helps for my paper on South Korean political history
Just finished watching Youth of May. Now I'm here watching this
I came here from Youth of May. I was really interested in what happened and wanted to know more about Gwangju Uprising
Curious because of the plot of youth of may
This year,Chun doo Hwan's grandson apologizes for what happened back in May 18..His grandson also called his grandfather a sinner....
Thanks to youth of may we are able to know the histroy of gwangju
I had never heard of this until I watched the drama. I find it so interesting that something really similar happened in my country, Mexico, but here it happened in de 60s.
Youth of May brings me here
Same!
after watching youth of may i had to see if this was based on real life
This so-called journalist only provides the sanitized "official" casualty figures without even mentioning the very existence of vastly higher unofficial casualties.
Whose here while watching Youth of May??
Actually I don't understand what's going on YOM...And i want to learn more about actually what happened in 1980 gwangju uprising... But I still do not understand..Someone pls explain me😑
Even in France, we can’t forget this date of may 1980.
But now, we pray For the Ukrainian people 😪😪😪
Trying to understand kdrama Youth Of May 😅
It similar to myanmar now and 1988 uprising
If there was an indisputable violence involved, then there's no question whether it is for condemnation or not.
ppl in the comment session be like: A taxi driver brought me here.
Here I am, a Burmese: Wondering how the Gwangju uprising succeeded (cuz SK ppl say our revolution is very much similar to what happened in Gwangju in 1980) and hoping the military regime in our country would come to an end very soon.
praying for your country
Fighting!!!!!
Very good information 👌 thank you 😊
Hi I am curious on what do koreans think about/ what's their stand on martial law? do koreans think martial law is good or bad, hoping for any Koreans to answer
I still can't digest the fact that "the very military whose existence was to protect the people of Korea staged multiple coups and shot their own fellow nationals. What difference do these soldiers have with the chinese PLA who fired live ammunition at the protestors in Beijing 1989 or the RED Army suppressing the Hungarian revolution and yet the US supported ROK dictators & depicted them as pro-democracy champions to other countries".
@전두환 So North Korea wanted to End Military Coup/Dictatorship in the south to establish FREE ELECTIONS 😂🤣.
No the US opposed all of Korea going full communist and moved them towards democracy like in Germany Japan and Italy
200 is by far the lowest figure I've ever seen
High schooler, demonstrated, crack down, holding death in arms, on the run, sought refuge, changed appearance, was betrayed, captured, interrogated, tortured, imprisoned, set free, homeless, thought dead, blacklisted, erased, fled country, got married, invited to return, supported opposition president, newly elected, new era for South Korean people, left country, back to obscurity, living with memories... Many stories and many true hero's of the country!
That's really good explanations
My hometown!
The movie 26years
Wow great video very educational 👍🏿❤️
I just know this because of a taxi driver hahha
‘Snowdrop’ brought me here. I had no idea South Korea faced such a turbulent time so recently

Here becasye of Youth of May so I can understand better
The very idea that corruption, misuse of political power, and criminal activities can be acceptable by those in power is as abhorrent today as it was in 1980 South Korea. What must be realized, is that there are those in political power who have a mindset of being above any moral code or respect for law. You see this lack of accountability in so many nations, to different degrees of course, like here in the U.S. Only the collective voice of an informed and concerned free voting public, and responsible leadership will, if not end misuse of government entirely, curtail it in its most abusive forms. South Korea has come along way from the days of the Korean War, and its up to the people of modern South Korea to elect real leadership and have the willpower to oust those who just need to go!
We are living misuse of bold political power in the United States.
Solution? In my opinion just execute all those involved with insurrection crimes without political negotiations or morality. Perhaps an American execution practice is better than a Chinese one? The point is that insurrection crimes have to pay the price soon or later.
I take it you support the democrats attempts to end democracy in the US?

Should get a different newscaster. This fella accent is too strong to understand clearly …. Geez…
There is a saying among the dacoits of Chambal, India " If a man kills another (or few other men) he is treated as a murderer and hanged but if the same man kills a whole clan ( aka genocide) he becomes a nation hero"
See people like Alexander, Genghis Khan, Timur , colonial powers were mass murderer of their times and hero to their people (in case of Alexander ironically to their enemies Persia as well.
Trials of such mass murders are waste of time as even Pol Pot of Combodia was never executed. Hence, victims rarely are ready to give evidence. The perpetrators are almost never punished.
Youth of may brought me here. I would say martial law will only protect those people in power. They have a special place in hell!
Heh, all these K drama fans here and I'm a history nerd who almost never watches such things.
