How much do you know about the Gwangju uprising & modern history of South Korea?

  • Former South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan stood up in front of a flurry of flashing cameras again last Monday. Chun appeared before a district court in the southwestern city of Gwangju, the very place where a pro-democracy uprising against his authoritarian rule took place in May 1980. Monday’s court appearance by the disgraced ex-leader comes in 23 years after he stood in a criminal trial on treason and other charges in 1996. Watching through all this, many South Koreans had a lot of mixed emotions. Do you feel the same way?

I want to thank the whole team that worked in the drama "youth of may". Because of them more and more people are now learning about this time in our history.
But what's terrifying is that this didn't just happen to Korea, this has happened everywhere in almost all countries. While in the kdrama, we saw the perspective of the characters mentioned in drama which was already painful enough, can you imagine, all the people that went through this?
Even more terrifying is that chaos like this is still happening till this day.

I lived in South Korea 14 years after this event and remember learning about it for the first time. It was a shock. I later visited the city. I think what is more shocking is that the truth of those events is still not fully known as well as the U.S. lack of response due to Cold War politics.

I still can't digest the fact that "the very military whose existence was to protect the people of Korea staged multiple coups and shot their own fellow nationals. What difference do these soldiers have with the chinese PLA who fired live ammunition at the protestors in Beijing 1989 or the RED Army suppressing the Hungarian revolution and yet the US supported ROK dictators & depicted them as pro-democracy champions to other countries".

The very idea that corruption, misuse of political power, and criminal activities can be acceptable by those in power is as abhorrent today as it was in 1980 South Korea. What must be realized, is that there are those in political power who have a mindset of being above any moral code or respect for law. You see this lack of accountability in so many nations, to different degrees of course, like here in the U.S. Only the collective voice of an informed and concerned free voting public, and responsible leadership will, if not end misuse of government entirely, curtail it in its most abusive forms. South Korea has come along way from the days of the Korean War, and its up to the people of modern South Korea to elect real leadership and have the willpower to oust those who just need to go!

Solution? In my opinion just execute all those involved with insurrection crimes without political negotiations or morality. Perhaps an American execution practice is better than a Chinese one? The point is that insurrection crimes have to pay the price soon or later.

There is a saying among the dacoits of Chambal, India " If a man kills another (or few other men) he is treated as a murderer and hanged but if the same man kills a whole clan ( aka genocide) he becomes a nation hero"
See people like Alexander, Genghis Khan, Timur , colonial powers were mass murderer of their times and hero to their people (in case of Alexander ironically to their enemies Persia as well.
Trials of such mass murders are waste of time as even Pol Pot of Combodia was never executed. Hence, victims rarely are ready to give evidence. The perpetrators are almost never punished.
