- This film is released in memory of Michael Horovitz, who died 7th July 2021. May the legend of this great Beat poet live on.
In our 'Francis Bacon: First Impressions' series of interviews, each interviewee was asked ‘What were your first impressions upon meeting Francis?’
In this film, poet, performer and publisher Michael Horovitz OBE talks about meeting Bacon and his 'acolytes' at The Colony Room Club. He recounts how Bacon told him about drinking with William Burroughs at Dean's Bar in Tangier, and the affinity he felt between their work.
First Impressions is directed by Harriet Vyner, and produced by the Estate of Francis Bacon in partnership with HENI Talks.
I could listen to Michael Horovitz for hours. He appears to have understood the essence of Bacon's work more deeply than most curators and critics I have read and heard on the subject. What a wonderfully erudite and creative person.
Lovely to hear Michael Horovitz.Kind soul .
What comes across is honesty and an earnest attitude towards his peers. A bohemian in poetically prose... as matter of fact about Bacon as sure as eggs are eggs.
As eggs are eggs...classic
This film is a gem. Thank you for sharing it. Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reading about Bacon, Lucian Freud, Michael Andrews and others. It’s interesting that they all endured the horror and anxiety of WW2. They did great work and knew how to have fun, to put it mildly!
Thank you. Yes, there are quite a few connections between the London painters of that time.
ah how sweet is this, we were all there and this is a good interview, we all miss M ichael and his energies and love of poetry
Sad that Michael and his strong spirit/energy are elsewhere now.
Yes.
Fascinating insight thankyou !
So thankful to have all these perspectives and experiennces come together to add to Bacon's portrait.
Thank you.

wonderful!!!
It's high time the movie was made! But who would play Francis??
‘Love is a Devil ‘ 1995 , Derek Jacobi ! Daniel Craig. Made by BBC …excellent.
@@afox1953 I had no idea...many thanks
@@afox1953 ‘Love is a Devil ‘ is an appallingly bad film; Bacon was not at all a camp queen like he was portrayed by that ham actor, Derek Jacobi ; and why was Tilda Swinton so polite as Muriel Belcher?

@@AlexanderVerney-Elliott-ep7dw Thanks- Will give it a well deserved body swerve then. Any movie with Craig featuring post Bond will always be difficult to digest. Typecasted? absolute- & perhaps for the better!
Fascinating interview, but I can't take my eyes off his shirt.
