  • A short video of my first attempt at carving a ladle. This is for a guy I worked for in France called Fred who collects spoons and ladles. Also i meant to say, boiled linseed oil is not the best for cooking implements (cos some brands are toxic), but my friend is just using this an ornament.

    I'm a spoon carver and I gotta say ash is my least favorite wood to carve. To make it worse it was not green wood which normally is easier to carve. You did a fine job though with what you had. Thumbs up!

      Do you think poplar would be good to use for a ladle?

    Love your videos! Just a note that boiled linseed oil can sometimes have toxic contaminants. Raw linseed is safer for stuff that you cook and eat with.

    This video reminded me of a USA PBS show called Alone in the Wilderness. If you haven’t already seen it, I think you’d enjoy it. It’s about a man who goes off the beaten path in Alaska and builds his own cabin, utensils, etc. Dated but a classic.

    If birch is softer than ash, then ash is extremely hard. In my experience, birch is hard and slightly brittle. I have no experience with ash, since it doesn’t grow here in northern Norway.

    This is great- you seem like a wprk-with-what-you-got kind of human, so I was wondering if it would be possible to do this same thing with only small hand tools on softer wood?
    Do you have any advice?

      Yeah, anything is possible :) I would recommend using a wood like Birch. Its a bit softer, but not too soft. I only used Ash cause its all i had and didnt want to cut down another tree. Making the bowl of the ladle is the hard bit if you dont have a spoon knife or scoop chisel, but you could try drilling holes and then chiselling or burning in the bowl with hot coals. Hope that helps :)

    That was really enjoyable 😁. Now you need to make a cauldron for Broth. How many man hours to make ?

    Watch out using boiled linseed oil as it's toxic and so shouldn't be used as a finish on something that's going to see use in cooking. (probably won't actually cause any real harm in that quantity, but better safe than sorry)

    • @FandabiDozi
      @FandabiDozi  7 лет назад +4

      I heard that its not great for food utensils, but I think my friend will just use it as an ornament :)
