I use Autotune to sing in a melody then i place the Autotune on it detached while i build the midi under it, because Autotune shows the note you are singing in real time!

Another cool tip is using melodyne to extract the midi from a certain sound. Or using the bass of a sample to find the root notes of the chords
facts this is another great method
a free tip, you can use newtone to get bass notes of the chords, just drag sample there
