(V8 SPOILERS IF ANYONE CARES) Fixing RWBY Vernal, whose character was built up to be a red herring, had a death scene that actually made me shed a tear for the girl. She had her own character, her own relationships, her own personality, her own flaws. She turned from a generic mook in a group full of mooks into a girl who, despite knowing what her inevitable fate will be once she gets down to that Vault, that I didn't want to see die. She felt REAL, and it made her death all the more heartbreaking. Compare that to Penny who, even after becoming a 'real girl', I felt nothing towards when Jaune slit her throat. No anger, no grief, no shock. Just complete apathy. Celtic Phoenix and you fine folks who comprise the Sketchy Huntsmen have done in but a few years what RWBY had all but completely failed to do for nearly a decade: Make me care for the characters and this world. This scene rivals, nay surpasses, Pyrrha's death in terms of an emotional gut punch and the gorgeous animation and artstyle put it into visual poetry. Kudos to you all on your wonderful work! I can't wait to see what you all do for Volume 6! But until then, Rest in Peace Vernal... No, not Vernal... Lily.
It's because they made Vernal real. They took their time to make her feel like a real character and made her death impactful, unlike Penny, who, in my opinion, was killed off for no reason than just to give Winter the maiden powers and Jaune more reason to be upset depressed, like if you were gonna give Winter the maiden powers the whole time, then just cut the middle man and give Winter the powers from the start Sorry for the rant, but that's my opinion, at least
