Erwin screaming before the Scouts leave for the mission is one of my favourite scenes. One of the the very few things which gets me more hyped than a new AoT overanalysis episode dropping. Especially after seeing Erwin so tormented and exhausted throughout all of season 3, him still being able to build up such charisma and power, as well as genuine excitement for seeing the basement, is just so inspiring, Levi's reaction says everything. And it makes it so much more tragic when he eventually chooses to sacrifice his dream.

I think the image of Erwin on his horse also could represent dying in battle. Statues of militery people on horeses represent how they died. And when it showcase the horse on it's backlegs they died in battle.

    • @Plaprad
      @Plaprad 3 месяца назад +2

Not really, that's more of an urban legend. Someone did a study a few years back looking at every statue they could and how the person died and there was no correlation. For example, damn near every statue of Napoleon has the horse on it's hind legs. But he died in bed in the South Atlantic.
Though, they did tell us there was a big thing with statues in boot camp. There was this big thing where if the horse had this leg up they were wounded, if this leg was up they were wounded and died after the battle. It even went so far as "If their sword is high they won the battle, if it's lower they lost the battle but won the war, etc..."
But all just legend. The artists just did either what the client paid for or what they thought was cool.

I don't really see the future Kenny analogue at all, I just thing Erwin was very obviously already broken from trauma and survivors guilt and in the end Levi realized that he could not bring the true suicidal maniac of AOT back to life as the colossal Titan doomed to be weaponized like a nuclear bomb. I don't think the differences in Armen and Erwin's ideology or perspective had any consideration for Levi, I think that from a cold, cost/benefit analysis Erwin is the obvious choice bar none, Flock was right superficially but while Flock knew Erwin's legend Levi knew the man and realized that the Erwin that got them to that point was already more or less gone before Erwin's final charge and that resurrecting the man as the Colossal wouldn't really bring him back.
Erwin had simply seen and done to much at that point, sacrificed to much. He had nothing left to give and if he was given the colossal titan he'd probably ended up feeding himself to another Titan or just disappearing and living in seclusion once paradie started making contact with the outside world. He wanted to die, simple as, and Levi couldn't bring himself to torture him with the colossal's resurrection no matter how valuable his mind was to them.

BTW do you think Sina, Rose, and Maria got differentiated Titans? I haven't seen this anywhere, but I imagine in going from Ymir's original titan to the Nine passed down separately, there must have been intermediate stages with fewer than nine. We know they take slightly different forms with each shifter. Maybe Ymir's daughters had a proto-Colossal-Female-Founding titan, a proto-Armored-Warhammer-Attack titan, and a proto-Cart-Jaw-Beast titan. Then whoever shared in eating them (to get from 3 inheritors to 9) got further differentiated versions, changing with how each successive shifter used their powers.

Levi later explains that he didn't choose Armin, but rather chose for Erwin to die then and there, because of his 私情 aka "personal feelings" (that part sadly wasn't translated quite accurately). Eren also pointed out that Levi wasn't rational on that rooftop at all. That being said, didn't Levi let Erwin free of his suffering, DESPITE what was better for Humanity's victory? We also will hear a lot in s4 that Hange, Armin and others would often reflect on that Erwin would have been a much more capable option for the command. And finally, in all the interview with the author and the cast the main focus when speaking about Midnight Sun episode is always Levi giving Erwin a mercy of peace (he was just about to inject Erwin after all, but what finally stopped him was Erwin himself and his gratitude for letting him go) and never choosing Armin as "the better option". Little tip I've since picked up if you tend to do this (afaik it applies to all anime): if you see the "to be continued..." End card before the credits, (95% of episodes) it's safe to skip the ED and go to the next episode. If you don't; then watch the ED as there's still more to watch.

People in the comments say that Levi chose the future over the past, but do they realize that Levi himself got stuck in the past after Erwin's death? 🙁
Isayama: "He is currently like a balloon dangling in the air rather aimlessly. To Levi, staying with Erwin until Erwin's last minute gave him a feeling that his has accomplished everything he needs to. I think he still has the goal of killing the Beast Titan."
Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi's VA): "Levi hasn't changed. The loss of Erwin is so huge that afterwards he feels like he's just living out the rest of his years"
Daisuke Ono (Erwin's VA): "After Erwin's death Levi always seemed lonely."

I think it's the blown back hair and jacket (even though Barturoto also has the same jacket), but no, that's definitely Berotorotorto. 😅
If there were any other instances were Marcel is brought up like that, I think you could make a case for that, but here I think it's just the wind blowing back his hair and the odd angle that kinda makes him look a bit off. I think the headshape is kinda a giveaway for that - Marcel's face was a bit more round/blocky, Bertolts is a lot more oval.
(Could also be different animators or something like that. This episode does have a few distinct frames too. Mikasa on the stairs looks a tad different to the usual close ups. Erwin's framing in the Levi scene also changes a little bit etc)

Nah. Commanders advertising themselves as the commander was actually the norm throughout history. Kings would wear crowns on their helms, or gilded armors; generals would wear extremely fancy horse-hair mohawks and feathers, and occasionally fancy scarlet capes.
The morale boost to the soldiers, especially if the commander is fighting on the front alongside them, was incredibly potent, and would prove to be instrumental in winning battles, often-times. It was also the case that in the same way flags (or other symbols representing the division of the army you are fighting in such as the Romans' golden eagles) represented a central point to rally around and ensure cohesion in the unit, commanders would often need to be a central figure to ensure that is readily recognizable in order to make sure their orders are carried out. They just had to rely upon their fellow soldiers to protect them and hope no one got a lucky throw with a javelin or shot with a gun/bow/crossbow/slingshot or whathaveyou.
It was only after modern communications tech was put into play that generals really had the luxury of hiding away from the battlefield and directing things from elsewhere. Even if most commanders preferred to fight from the rear when it wasn't necessary to join their men at the front (because they did know that losing the commander would likely cost a potential victory, and typically didn't want to put themselves in danger unless they felt it necessary, as such), they would still wear distinguishing markers to make it very clear who was in charge.

Levi is one of the best written characters in fiction simply because every little detail about how he behaves and does things ties back to his upbringing and background. He’s the strongest but far from perfect. He chose the future over the past here

levi responded both when floch asked him "why did you choose armin" and later, when armin asked him "why did you choose me?" it should be clear, don't rely on videos like this the work itself should be enough. levi replied that he didn't want to make erwin suffer anymore, call him back to that hell and force him to be the devil.

I agree with most of your points but I don't think he had 99 percent made his choice , I think it was weighing heavy on him and he was considering all those points you made but I think with erwin's sacrifice and choosing Levi as the sole survivor to avenge him and the others made him almost guilty to the point where seeing erwin alive (barely) when he assumed he was dead made him double think himself and want to give the syringe to erwin and it was erwin's final hand raise that made him realize what the right choice actual was

I was wondering what you'd make of Eren saying "why isn't anyone stopping us?". If you'll indulge me, let me share some of my thoughts:
To me, this line speaks volumes about how Eren views himself, his own combative nature, aggression, and impulsive, and the role he has come to rely on the others around him to play in that. Throughout the series and in pretty much every flashback of Eren's life, we see him jumping feet first into every conflict, be it with the Shiganshina bullies, with Hannes and the garrison soldiers, with Mikasa's captors, and later with Jean and various other cadets of the 104th, and while in almost every situation he gets in way over his head, but there's always some one around who's stronger, faster, and/or more level-headed than him to bail him out of trouble (usually Mikasa). We will later see him do this again when he hides out in Liberio, makes a charge for Zeke, and of course, The Rumbling; Eren is always counting on his friends and comrades to pull him back before he goes too far. Here, we see what happens when no one comes to his rescue: instead of stopping himself, like he knows deep down he should probably do, he just keeps right on going, allowing the inertia of his impulsiveness carry him forward long after the heat of the moment has cooled down.
In a very sneaky way, this, I think, foreshadows Eren's actions in starting The Rumbling not just as a show of force to make a point but as the global cataclysm everyone feared it would be, and once again he relies on his friends to stop him and pull him back before he completely wipes out all of humanity outside the walls.
It's one of AoT's signature blink-and-you'll-miss-it seemingly innocuous moments that ends up carrying so much narrative weight, and in my opinion, is one of the most telling and important lines of dialogue in the entire story.

By most of history, over 90% people were doing farming. Add to this, that only some parts can be actually use for farming, and only part of that can be use for farming efectivelly. And there are so much more problems with this. Most likely the best land for farming is outside of wall Rose. And whan I get this bird-view of walls, and seeing how much of this are mountains, that are not good for farming, they must have really have large problems with this.

As far as this commanders in old times, they were very easy to spot, since they usually were something difffrent than regular soldier. Roman Centurion is best example, with there very diffrent helmet, but others had that too. Very fancy decorations, staying close to flag of the unit, specialistic weapons, and so on. This blending in the regular troops, and heaving only minor changes is reacent. First half of XX century you still could easly spot Russian political commissars.
And The GOAT Commander had this horse since they were fighting only mindless titans, so he could only be seen by his own men. Really no reason to hide.

I’ll be the first to in line to agree with Levi’s decision, but there are some factors that I see between Erwin and Armin that makes a big difference. I think that Erwin has two traits that Armin is lacking; his charisma and his poker face. Armin’s biggest weakness was his tendency to rely on empathy.
