- Footage from a Turkish gamer's livestream has gone viral after it captured the moment a powerful earthquake hit the Turkish coastal city of Izmir on Friday. In the footage, 22-year-old Arda Can Özel can be seen sprinting out of the room as he feels the ground beginning to shake. He later posted on his Instagram account to say he and his family survived the quake unharmed

As a boy from Izmir, I remember how it hit. I had never seen any earthquake before than that. Fortunately, nothing happened to our buildings or people. However, it was terrifying.
My great grand parents would tell me about the great earthquake of 1897 measuring 8.7 in northeast india. My great grand dad survived the quake but what he told me was really scary. The ground was spinning like whirlpool. It lasted for 5 minutes or so. Every moment or so he was thrown out from one side to the other.

Earthquakes grow in logarithmic scale in magnitude, 8.0 is 30 times greater than 7.0 M. And if the center of the earthquake is close to the surface it destroys more!. That is why some 7.5M (close to surface aboyt 20km or less) can destroy more than 8M ( center is in deep surface about 60km or more). Imagine the two earthquakes in Turkey 7.7M and 7.6M at depth only 5km!!

Yup, that's a 7.0 quake for ya! Video of shaking is 40 seconds long, but the shaking wasn't done. I'd like to see the entire video.
it was more like 5-8 minutes
@@AnnoyedArt1256 no, 5-8 minutes is for 9+ earthquake. M7 earthquake duration is about 15 seconds to 60 seconds. Strong shaking after 40-60 seconds is classified as M7.5 earthquake (just like Palu 2018 and Padang 2009 eq).
M8 duration is about 2 minutes to 4 minutes. I mean i have experienced earthquake before. this year alone, I felt 2 strong earthquakes (M6.8 and M6.9) and it lasted about 20 seconds for each earthquake. 13 years ago my city was rocked by the M8.5 earthquake about 2 minutes.
@@AnnoyedArt1256 and of course bedrock lithology has an important role in the duration and strength of earthquake shocks. Sedimentary lithology, for example, can amplify the duration and amplitude of an earthquake. It is not surprising that the earthquake, which initially only lasted 20 seconds, can be amplified to 1 minute.
